I recently got a used copy of Corridor 7 (CD) and I'm trying to get it working in DOSBox with a BIN/CUE file. I have everything mounted up, but the game crashes when I run it.

If I let the opening animation run without interrupting it, I get "SD_PlaySound() Uncached sound." right after the Capstone logo and "The Pinnacle of Entertainment Software" appears. When the game crashes it sometimes set the sound configuration to "NONE" and when there are no sounds, it will play through the animation fine.

If I interrupt the opening animation, I can start playing the game and the CD Audio will play, but then it crashes at some point it crashes with the same "Uncached sound" error. Has anyone else experienced this and/or know how to fix it?

EDIT: When playing with Adlib sounds, the in-game crashing doesn't seem to happen (at least not as quickly as when playing with CD audio), but the crash in the opening animation still occurs.

Also, am I understanding correctly that to keep the game from deleting the files after installing them, you have to use the "keepfiles" flag when running the game? If so, that is some terrible design.

I would try the 30-level Floppy Disk version, I think it is better. Are you using DosBox v0.74 or the latest svn? I have the CD too and might try this later. If the latest svn does cause issues on all machines we might be able to report it to the Dosbox team.

The floppy version does seem to be more stable. I'm using DOSBox 0.74.

I have EMS and XMS enabled in the DOSBox config.

My autoexec section looks like this:
::: CODE :::
[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.
@ECHO OFF
mount C "CORR7CD"
ImgMount D "CD\CORR7CD.CUE" -t iso -fs iso
REM CD AUDIO is a bit loud and the in-game volume doesn't seem to work.
MIXER CDAUDIO D-6
C:
CLS
CORR7CD LOCAL KEEPFILES
EXIT

EDIT:
To further add to the confusion, I did a fresh full install from the CD in DOSBox and it works. I have adlib music and digital sounds. If I exit the game and restart it, it sometimes messes up the CONFIG.DAT file and I get no sound, no music, or neither and then once I enable them, I start getting crashes again.

Here's an educated guess - If you give "DOS" a date from the 20th Century, install Corridor 7 For CD then, exit the game, and restart it with the same 20th Century date, can you still replicate the crashing?

I suspect there's some copy protection scheme that uses the date as a reference, but that it suffers from the Y2K bug.

I think it has to do with my cycles setting. When cycles=max, things mess up, but with cycles=fixed 20000 things seem to behave as they should. I guess going too fast messes up their Sound Blaster detection routines...?

I suppose that's possible. I've never set DOS Box to Cycles Max, so I've never experienced these problems. I have to reduce and increase the cycles to get many DOS games working the "right" speed.

That does appear to have been the problem. with cycles at 20000 instead of max the game runs without a problem.

Capstone has other games with timer issues, both Witchaven games come to mind.

Corridor 7, while IMO being the most decent/tolerable of the Crapstone games I too had issues with it. Personally if you have to give it a go I would suggest the 30 level floppy version over the 40 level CD version, the game goes on long enough as it is and becomes incredibly repetitive before long. The novelties being the CD version has more weapons and creatures and the aforementioned CD soundtrack, which is pretty decent all things considered. I just could never bring myself to finish either version despite giving the game an honest to god chance on multiple occasions.

If Night Dive bring it along other titles back I may consider giving one last go.
