For Atomprojekt, I want to do something a little more creative and exciting for the final boss than simply resprite an existing Wolf3D boss.

I would like to do an All This And Wolf3D Floor 69 type scenario. The premise would be that BJ would need to flip 6 switches within a set amount of time to stop a nuclear meltdown. Once completed, the boss would spawn. Like ATAW3D, I would want to prevent saving until all 6 switches have been thrown.

How difficult would this be to accomplish? I think I can do the switches by creating a gamestate and adding one to it each time one is thrown and unlocking a door when it reaches '6'. Not sure how I would do the time limit though.

I would use "gamestate.TimeCount" as a reference. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the timer on the bomb starts at the same time as the level, correct? Smile

Correct, and it would stop after the sixth switch is thrown. I would also want to have an explosion when it went off (which could be done as simply as fading the screen to white with a sound effect, after which the player would die and an image of a mushroom cloud would display).

It'd probably be easier to just have it set a boolean in gamestate to false when it starts the level and true when the sixth switch is thrown and then only allow saving when it's true.

Thanks for the suggestions thus far! My plan is to get the switches working and then I'll worry about the saving issue.

In terms of my final boss, I am going to base him off mecha-hitler. However, I would like to make it so that it's almost an instant kill if the player isn't behind cover when the boss fires his guns. How would I do this?

You could use the code in this tutorial: [tutorial] Changing Enemies' Attack Strength in SDL, just multiply damage by a factor that suits your preference; or set it to a fixed number, such as 100 or higher, that will kill the player immediately regardless of the distance that he is from the boss.
