I pre-ordered the Doom reboot for the PC. Iím moving into a different house where Iíll set up an area for a gaming computer. Iím looking online, in Game Informer magazine, in GameCenter magazine, & PC Gamer magazine at the different PCs. What PC make & model do you recommend that I buy for the Doom reboot & other modern computer games?

In the meantime, I already asked the Doom reboot Facebook group today. I'd like your opinions too.

I'd go for a custom build, personally. This would be a good place to start, IMO.

I'd go for a custom build also.
On this site, they have several propositions on what to choose. (sorry it's in french)

On the particular Doom Facebook group, they are telling me that the GeForce GTX 970 is good & that the GeForce GTX 1080 (which isn't out yet) is expensive or hype. So I might go with the 970. I'll need to type on the thread again, then either take a screenshot or link to the thread.

What about gaming keyboards? Are they hype? What about joysticks or Playstation 3-like controllers?

I think I have Windows 32-bit Vista for now. Let me get this straight. In a custom build, I'm supposed to separately buy the computer, the GPU, the CPU, the keyboard, & the mouse? I'm not interested in buying a used computer.

If all you're after is gaming performance, than I believe replacing the motherboard, graphics card, and power supply should do. Replacing the RAM is probably necessary too, but read up on what type before you go and get it.

If you're upgrading the motherboard, you'll probably need to upgrade the CPU too, and if you have less than 8GB of RAM you'll want to upgrade that too.

Also, you'll definitely want to upgrade to a 64-bit OS, ideally Windows 7 or 10.

I had forgotten about this thread, but support for Windows Vista ends next month.

I look at steampowered.com & they list the technical requirements for games. Hereís a list of modern games that I know I already have on DVD:
-Wolfenstein (2009 game) (No longer on steampowered.com for some reason, but I have the DVD of it):
-Doom (2016) & Doom (2016) Demo (I have the DVD of it):
http://store.steampowered.com/app/379720/
-Duke Nukem Forever (I have the DVD of it):
http://store.steampowered.com/app/57900/
-Unreal Tournament III: (I have the DVD of Unreal Tournament III Collectorís Edition instead of Unreal Tournament III Black):
http://store.steampowered.com/app/13210/
-Wolfenstein: The New Order: (I have the DVD)
http://store.steampowered.com/app/201810/

Hereís a list of other modern games that Iíd possibly want to play:
-Wolfenstein: The Old Blood:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/350080/
-Rise of The Triad (2013):
http://store.steampowered.com/app/217140/
-Doom (2016) Season Pass:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/458020/
-Doom (2016): Bloodfall:
http://steamcommunity.com/games/379720/announcements/detail/585863384488172666
-Doom (2016): Hell Followed:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/527180/
-Doom (2016): Unto The Evil:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/499590/?snr=1_7_7_151_150_2
-Pinball FX2: (They have Bethesda Pinball downloadable content):
http://store.steampowered.com/app/226980/
-Q.U.B.E: Director's Cut:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/239430/?snr=1_7_7_151_150_1
-Some sort of Minecraft:
http://store.steampowered.com/search/?snr=1_5_9__12&term=Minecraft
-The F.E.A.R. series:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/21090/
-Quake Champions: (This is still in beta)
-Unreal Tournament 2017 or 2018?:
https://www.epicgames.com/unrealtournament/
-Bombshell:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/353190/
-Prey 2017:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/480490/
-Thief 2014:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/239160/
-I sometimes think about Bioshock Infinite because I had heard that it has 10 out of 10 in every category:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/8870/

What about a Windows 10 PC used for modern gaming? Whereís the best place to buy a Windows 10 computer? Wal-Mart? Staples? Best Buy? Newegg.com? I havenít been keeping track of graphics cards or system requirements after Windows Vista. Iíve never owned a laptop before, but I donít mind if itís a laptop as long as I have Carbonite and/or can get the data off of it. Some gaming computers can cost $2,000 & I was possibly thinking about no more than $1,000.

Windows Vista support ends on April 11: http://diehardwolfers.areyep.com/viewtopic.php?t=7767
My old Windows Vista computer that Iím typing on right now will be put in the kitchen without an internet connection & used for transferring VHS to digital.

I decided to ask again because things have probably changed in the 10 months since I posted in this thread. So, what make and model do you recommend for less than $1,000?

If you're trying for a physical store rather than an online one, Staples would be my first pick.

Walmart should be your last choice, be it a physical store or an online one. Walmart specializes in electronics that aren't made to last, and that includes PCs. I would try Staples or Target myself.

Matt,

I don't believe you should be so worried about Vista support ending. I haven't run into anything yet that works on Vista/7 that doesn't on 10. Some old XP-era games, especially from the early 2000s, might tend to have issues. However, even most of them can be patched to run flawlessly on 10.

As for modern gaming, it's all about the graphics card. I have a GTX 970 and it plays the new Doom very well. Since that card is now last generation, you could probably get one for cheaper or get a much better current-generation equivalent for the same price.

If you're able to, don't buy a pre-built system. It will be far cheaper to build a system yourself.
