Hi,

Anyone know what the graphics editor used by id for Wolfenstein 3-D is called? I know TED5 was used for level editing but I don't know about graphics.

Just wondering

Thanks
Chris

Check out 2:37-2:47 in this video. It looks like Adrian Carmack draws them by hand on a sketchpad?

I think that program shown to organize their pictures was custom-made and called IGRAB? A few more images here:

If I'm not mistaken, I-Grab was used to extract files and create data H files like GFXV_WL6.H ("Thank you for using IGRab!"). I do recognize the art program being used at the end of the video, but I can't remember the name of it right now. Confused But the art program has probably been free for quite a while now, since it's DOS-based.

Thanks both of you. Let me know if you remember the name of the art program.

Will do. Smile Expect to be frustrated if you ever come across it; DOS doesn't support filenames longer than 8 letters in length, and spaces and special characters aren't supported, either. Add to that, there are many picture file formats that weren't used back then.

I'm pretty much a DOS junkie at heart (even using DOS Neopaint for my game development even today), so these limitations don't bother me much. But there are things about it that bother even me, so I imagine it'll tick off many people who were raised on more modern tools and all that. Smile

I did some digging and found that ID was using Deluxe Paint II for their games.

Thanks for narrowing it down. I was just about positive that Id was using some version of Deluxe Paint, but as you posted, more than one version of the utility exists. Smile

Yep, and it was a popular program too. I just searched for DOS paint programs using Google images and then with some keywords Smile

Interesting. I used to play around with Deluxe Paint II back in the early 90s. Awesome that it was used by ID.

Is this a photo of it?:

EDIT: I once saw a picture from Twitter or somewhere of this same program with The Spider Mastermind from Doom & that they showed that he was orginally going to have a magic attack.

Sorry for bumping, but if Delux Paint was used to create these files, would it be able to open the WL6 files, or similar files?

Or does anyone know of a way of opening these files without using Wolf editors like Chaos Edit? I have one I need to view, but can't open in the editors.

I believe Deluxe Paint only dealt with image files, not the game files. Do you know why the one you need to open can't be opened in the editors?
