I thought it would be nice to have Wolfenstein 3d translated HUDs. There's already a few translations out there like Spanish and Japanese, and I thought it would be nice for the HUD images to also be translated. The German one comes from the mod Der Angriff, the rest are made by me.

Der Angriff also has German translated menu screens (like options, control setup, get psyched!, etc). That would be the next step with other languages, so then everything in the game can be fully translated to another language. Another big step would be the translation of the Read This! and the endings to the episodes.

Of course not everything could be translated word-for-word, for example; "Get Psyched" would be "Los geht's!" in German because it's the closest you can get, and there would be several other instances.

Some of the words below were changed from the English HUD. For example "Score" is sometimes "Points", "Ammo" is sometimes "Shot" or "Bullets", and Health in the Russian version is "Life" because the Russian word for health was too long and would not look too good on the HUD.

German:

Italian:

Japanese (I have heard of a Japanese version of Wolf 3d):

Russian:
Editing
Spanish (ECWolf has a Spanish translation):

If any of you are fluent in these languages (besides German, because I know that one is accurate), please let me know if I've made any mistakes or if the text is unclear.

These could be useful in source ports, personal reasons, or even for mods where the player is not American.

The German one comes from Bunkersturm, doesn't it? Bunkersturm is an obscure mod released in 2006 which features all-new German sounds and graphics along with the status bar, and is an overall quite extensive mod. Maybe I confuse it with Der Angriff. Could be fun to play in SDL one day.

I have also heard of a Japanese version of Wolf, and I remember Chris either released an executable, a mod, or contributed to something where I saw an all-Spanish menu, read-me, episode selection etc. but I do not remember a status bar.

Russian translations are quite wrong.

Should I add hebrew too? Smile

I've never heard of Bunkersturm, but Der Angriff was pretty extensive and was made by a German. Perhaps both were made by the same person.

All the translations only had the menus translated, no graphics or endtext, and usually the Read This wasn't rewritten either.

Could you provide me with the proper Russian translations? I don't know any Russian whatsoever so I was pretty sure that one would be the most inaccurate.

Hebrew would be a great one to add as well!

For the record, the Spanish text is 100% accurate.

Thank you doomjedi! I will try my best to make those 2 languages into the HUD, they are more challenging than the others due to their alphabet being so different!

And thanks Ronwolf, I will be making that one shortly also Smile

I guess Get Psyched is 'get ready' or 'be prepared' or something similar.

Thank you for the Hungarian translation, Officer. That will be another one I'll do, but I will say many of these languages have to be translated in the menus and stuff as well, which has yet to be done. I have begun work on a German translation for ECWolf, which can be used as a base for SDL and DOS.

doomjedi, I will more than likely use a different font for the Get Psyched frames in Hebrew and Russian, but make it as close to the original as possible. The Spanish, Italian, German, and Dutch ones won't need a new font.

Any suggestions?

I've always understood the 'Get Psyched!' one as ronwolf1705 suggested a few messages above, but also as 'Get Excited!', or 'Get Passionate!', or 'Get Wild!', etc. Maybe a native from English can provide a more accurate rendering?

As far as possible translations go, this one's a bit more tricky to convert than the status bar text - at least into Spanish. It may be more transparent when the conversion is done into other languages...

In principle, I would suggest alternatives like 'ˇPreparate!', 'ˇMentalizate!', 'ˇConcentrate!', but if a more accurate rendering from an English native could be provided, then maybe I could offer a more conscientious translation too...

Cheers,

Ariel

I think we just opened a can of worms here ... Smile

"Psych" is a slang word that made its debut in the U.S. sometime in the 1980s. Some sources claim it began in the 1970s, but as far as the U.S. is concerned, this is not the case. I really can't speak for the other countries, though.

"Psych!" was usually spoken after you've deliberately led someone down a false path, thus letting them know they've been duped ("Fool you!" was also used for a short time in the 1980s).

I'd have to say the alternate phrases for "Get Psyched!" would be "Get Duped!", "Get Misled!", or "Get Fooled!".

I think this definition is more relevant in this context: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=psyched

Friendly neighborhood know-it-all here:

"Get Psyched!" has always been slightly awkward in this context. But of course that's just its charm, no need to defend it really, it's awesome. It was biggest here in the 90s, definitely an American English youth thing to say, but I also think few actually said it often, almost a too-goofy thing to say in any context. Very slangy, dorky. However, when actually used, it would be more like "I'm really psyched to be going to start classes next fall!", or you could use it more seriously like "I'm trying to get psyched for this upcoming test", that is, studying, focusing. Even more confusingly, if you got 'psyched out', it's like you got scared, lost your nerve, knocked off-balance mentally.

The phrase is a lot like being 'stoked', being excited or thrilled, but with a tiny bit of nuance towards a state of mental focus, a bit more serious. In my opinion, for the loading screen in Wolfenstein 3D, it's a quirky, goofy way to say "Get Ready". Lol I wish I knew who exactly at Id thought of it Smile

It can be narrowed down to two people, at least - Artist Adrian Carmack or Creative Director Tom Hall. I'm almost positive it's the latter.

Hi there!

I was just checking out on Google if my old mod "Der Angriff" is still alive, and - whoo! - it is!

It's a pleasure to me that after almost ten years there are still some lads out there who remember my mod. Actually, I for myself haven't played it since AGES (I think, I should do so as quickly as possible).

Yes, it's me, Maximator how was doing both the mods "Der Angriff" as well as "Bunkersturm", which was the first mod I did and which is obviously really not the best the web has seen. But "Der Angriff" took me quite a long to finish and release, and I do have to say that I was rather proud of it.

You may be free to use any of the sounds, graphics or inspirations for your own mods, but please give credits and drop me a line when you use something as I am still inquisitively on what went out of it.

Regards from sunny Germany,

Raphael a.k.a. Maximator

Good to hear from you, Maximator. Smile The first mod is usually the one that requires the most work from you. You just make countless mistakes that you wouldn't make at all if you had done a mod before. You just spend more time correcting things than you do creating. But when you go into a project, know what to do, and know what *not* to do, there's just no substitute for that. Smile

My very first wolf3d mod featured a translated status bar! A considerably less elegant one, to say the least Razz
