How about Wolf3D version of FreeDoom project - as community effort?

We can create "all new" nazi-themed resources (art, music, sounds, maps) under Wolf4SDL engine - for all-purpose use with credit. Then, we'll be actually able to legally sell our mods

https://freedoom.github.io/about.html

Just imagine the ability to sell and freely distribute Wolf3D mods based on this FreeWolf art and map modifications...
I can sure recreate many Wolf3D-looking parallels of walls from scratch, make new fonts etc...

8-dir nazi enemies is not an easy thing. There are guys on zDoom forum who are capable of making 8-dir enemies...

Thanks for the support! Smile

My first ("fast") attempt on freeWolf texture:

First - we need a team of community members for it...who think they're up for the task. It's making everything from scratch.
Also, obvious condition - all contributors agree for their work to be used free of charge for ANY type of use, as long as credit is given.

Good idea, but personally I prefer Doom than FreeDoom and I am not sure I would devleop any mod for FreeDoom...
All I am trying to say is it can be a great effort for a very small output. But still it would certianly be good having a default set of resources free of use with Wolf4SDL.

Does Freerott seem appropriate for this thread?

The admin at http://rott.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?p=2850&mforum=rott#2850 posted on May 10, 2014 that there’s a Freerott project going on. Rott (Rise of The Triad) was originally going to be an add-on for Wolfenstein 3D in about 1994.

I've been wondering about the "FreeWolf" kind of thing myself! I think it would be a really good idea, even moreso than Freedoom, considering our tendency to make stand-alone mods! No one really cares, but even aside from wanting to sell stuff, wouldn't it be pretty great to be able to make stand-alone mods that *aren't* legally gray without having to replace all the resources?

I think our community has already created a fair amount of original resources to kickstart such a project. Like Spear Resurrection/End of Destiny, it does contain many assets that use wolf3d graphics as a base, but it also got a lot of original graphics, including graphics that could directly replace original wolf3d ones (Door textures and collectible sprites, just to name a few. It even got new adlib sounds!).

FreeWolf can be done, as community effort. I've already made 1 wall in the past.
Enemies are the hardest task though, we'd need full set of 8dir enemies from scratch.

I made two enemies from scratch... they're flat-colored and maybe not completely fitting, but maybe they could be a good base for some editing.

I've also made a bunch of wolf-lookalike walls for Ginyu's project, including gray brick, blue brick, wood, wooden panel, gray wall, marble tiles and some doors/door sides.

So soon? I didn't even show you the other cool thing yet!

I made a few vanilla texture replacements a while ago. Today I started making some more that were still missing, and before I knew it, I replaced all the wolf3d textures with non-commercial equivalents. For some textures (red brick, brown weave, purple, brown brick, metal, doors and some wall decor - that's all if I remember right) I used textures from Spear Resurrection (some not edited, some edited heavily), the rest I made from scratch.

I also replaced a number of sprites with sprites from Spear Resurrection and March of the Army, but left most of them intact. While I could have easily replaced every sprite with a new one, almost all of the "new" ones are ever so slightly based on original stuff. I'm pretty certain all the stuff I replaced is new, but if you find something made by neither me nor ArEyeP, let me know.

Do you think that simple animated sprites could look decent enough together with detailed textures? Like in old cartoons, with detailed backgrounds and flat-colored moving objects.

In some cases, it would work, and in some cases, it wouldn't. Some art styles work better together than other ones will. The Wolf3D palette is one of the least ideal to try and combine such art together; the grey shadings have a more subdued, realistic tone to them, while shades like red, blue, green, and brown have a more cartoonish look to them. Add to all that, the color selection for most of the colors just isn't all that great.

For textures, we could always use photos as a base and then modify them. It gives a realistic feel, and isn't that difficult.

Well, I didn't really mean "detailed" as in "more than the originals" in this case... just compared to the flat-colored enemy sprites I made.

I didn't mean more detailed; I simply meant that it would save a lot of time if we made the textures from photos, and then put effort into the sprites, so that the effort could be used in the creation of sprites.

Well, making textures isn't really that big of an effort to me... I mean, I just assembled that full texture set with several of the textures being made by me from scratch. All it takes is making a pattern and adding some effects, like noise on the gray bricks. Though photos can certainly be very useful, too (this texture set contains two colorized Hitler photos I got from Wikimedia Commons). Basically, textures are a non-issue to me. Unfortunately, it's not so simple with sprites since they're supposed to be 3d objects as opposed to mostly flat surfaces.

True, textures are fairly easy to make. By the way, I've been working on a "free" pistol sprite, and before I add the finishing touches, I ask you all: should it be held with two hands, or one?

I'm not much of any good at people, but I made a single guard frame, that might work as a base, if a more skilled pixel artist than I were interested in working on this.

Wall textures on the other hand, I would be able to recreate, with some homage to the originals in design.
Who ever it is done by, some sort of consistency in style would need to be matched by the participants in order make it appear as a coherent art set.

Pistol sprite:

Finally, it's done! I may improve the arm a bit, but other than that, here it is!
(The arm is the same colour as the default floor in some places...Edges need to be cleaned up.

1-dir even I can draw all needed enemies from scratch (did such before even for Bosses). Even animate them. Textures I can recreate as well (as did with one wall posted here before, though I must say it was alot of effort...but Wolf3D doesn't have that many walls).

Problem is 8dir effort on enemies, this is whole other level that really makes the border between possible and (seemingly) impossible.

UPDATE:: Fixed link on my Wolf3D wall 1 freewolf remake (earlier this thread)

8-dir is definitely a challenge. the 4 90-deg directions are not too difficult, but it's the 4 45-deg that are a major challenge

8-dir enemies are not impossible and not sooo hard to do. It just takes some effort, time and patience or willpower.

Well, I did make some 8-dir enemies from scratch! Just not very detailed ones... I could probably add some shading and detail too, but that would take a while...
