Ok there been many mapping contests and maps awlays seem to be in the center. How about something different to keep this place+modding alive and bring some creativity. It's just a rough concept. There could be several different contests. Not only mapping. And not something like "Mod in 1 week" since probably no one would have that energy, time or motivation i guess.
Rather something simple and fast so it keeps people and ideas going. Maybe 1-2 weeks for a contest. Maybe 1 week break and then the next one.

Example:
WEEK 1: make the best/funniest "70s furniture" sprite with EGA colors only
WEEK 2: make a thug enemy with only 4 colors (1 frame or only front frames)
WEEK 3: make the grooviest adlib sound you can think of
WEEK 4: make a classical 70s weapon (frame) with 16 EGA colors
WEEK 5: make a 16x16 map that fits the EGA/70s theme

WEEK 23: make a boss character (1 frame or all frames) in atari 2600 style
WEEK 24: make a 8x8 map where you only collect spawning dog food (atari games which had only 1 screen levels for score points. would require code changes)

WEEK 69: pick 3 sprites and give them a xmas makeover
WEEK 70: make a santa enemy sprite with only 1 red, white and brown color.
WEEK 666: make the most hilarious BJ statusbar face

Some more ideas for the challenges:

GFX:
- make a pirate weapon (single frame) / pirate theme week
- make the worst looking sprite possible

SOUNDS:
- make a real creepy adlib sound
- record the most epic death voice
- try saying "x" on polish

MUSIC:
No idea if there is a simple fun way. With mp3/ogg everyone could "hummmm" a song or everyone does only 10 secs and its gonna be cut together to a full song

LEVELS:
- make 13x13 map
- make a map only made of circles
- make a map without doors
- diagonal is the way
- make dogs chase player
- make a square room with sprites inside only
- make a small level made out of stone bricks only

At the end of a theme or few weeks you could have enough resources to make a funny little mod out of it (few sprites, 1 weapon, 1 front-frames only enemy/boss).
Not that Pac-Man had more variety >< The winners could decide about some code features or so.

Winner could maybe also pick the next idea, theme or style. Maybe end up in a hall of fame in the mod which would be a room with the statue of the author who won contest xy. Or just highscore list with the victories.

Sounds great to me! We need something to keep the Wolfenstein community alive, and this may be the solution!

Cool to hear. I kept the ideas on purpose simple so more people could/can participate. I don't think even a person with 0 artistic skills should have problem making a 4 color or EGA graphic for a static sprite. Also making an adlib sound shouldn't be a problem if you know how to use a mouse pointer.

Another idea:
"Person A" draws/describes a level or makes half of a level then gives it to the person leading the contest who gives it to another random person participating. That "person B" will try to finish or make that level.

Soooo, who would actually bother to take part in it?

Me & Dean actually did that a couple of times, it's fun!

I would like to participate, whenever time permits it.

That's an idea I was considering and discussing with a few people from the community too, either in a contest format or as a co-operative community mapset of sorts. It's something that should definitely be attempted, as evidenced by ack's and Ariel's joint efforts for example. I see two main possibilities for the basic formula:

-person A fills half of the map area and person B fills the other half
-person A comes up with the layout and static objects, person B introduces enemies, resources, teleporters etc, perhaps with small alterations to the design if strategically necessary

I don't know, either one could be fun.

I like this a lot. I think it would be neat to see people work on things that could ultimately be used for mods and addons in the long run. I have recorded tons of German phrases for Wolfenstein mods that Iíve never released, some sound pretty funny. I also have done some custom art work in 64x64.
