Who on here plays DooM? And if you play custom wads, what are your favorite ones?

Right now I'm playing some well-known ones for the first time, and recording levels as I play them. You can see them on my channel, they are in playlists: https://www.youtube.com/user/kakhome1 Any/all commentary welcome!

I play Doom.
Mostly Brutal Doom/Project Brutality recently, but also there are interesting custom WADS I get from zdoom or russian Doom forum.
My recent playing hits are fantastic "CastleVania - Simon's Destiny" TC, "Hocus Pocus" TC, "Golden Souls" is interesting too, Batman Doom: Reborn....

I can definitely advise you if good ones. But someone already made this helpful guide:

Nice poster, but I'm betting it was made before 2015 (September 2014 perhaps?). Needs some Valiant, Ancient Aliens, and Sunlust (at the very least!). Resurgence or Going Down sure would not hurt, either.

Quite a cool mod! It's nice to see what Wolfers are doing outside Wolfenstein!

This is what I'm doing outside of Wolfenstein (...sort of, it's WolfenDoom still):

I definitely feel that BOA is the mod of the year. The effort put into it is formidable!

doomjedi, did you make the Blade of Agony mod yourself? How do you find so much free time to do modding? Do you even sleep at night? Smile

Anyway, it looks badass. Congrats.

All the best,

Ariel

Thank you so much for the support.
We're working hard on Chapter 3.

Thanks Smile
The answer is no, BoA is made by a small team of dedicated people (roll over avatars (made by me BTW) to see the real faces Wink ), I'm just (?) the spriter of the project:
http://boa.realm667.com/index.php/team

I joined the project in April 2016 (before Chapter 1 was released), and worked hard on it ever since, doing the largest art work I've ever did for any mod, that was seen by all as being of impossible scale at the start.
By first big task was to transform ALL the many BoA enemies, Bosses and even some scenery to double-res (128x128). And BoA had ALOT of 8-directional enemies and NPC story/allies characters, really ALOT. Doing 8dir hires enemies was considered impossible before in such scale, I even made 8dir shooting frames for all.
And after that was done, with development still going and new enemies/Bosses being constantly needed - all the new art since is my hires work as a team member.
My hires art first debuted in Chapter II release.
Since then I've already done with most art tasks for Chapter 3, enemies, Bosses + additional actions to most older BoA enemies (and BJ).
I won't over-credit myself, but my hires art (by shared team opinion) did a major change to BoA taking it to a new level artwise, and is part of a Chapter II success, and you can see my enemies in PC Gamer article screenshots (enemies), it's very rewarding. As a core team member I also obviously participate in general development/discussions and some of my ideas were accepted (including for Chapter III, I even got to name the first level of Chapter III).
Needless to say this art can be used for 8dir MAC-enemies for general Wolf3D modding, even full 8dir hires remake of original games.

Again, we work hard on Chapter 3 where you'll see more of my art Smile

Yes. And indeed it's harder and harder to find time for modding, sure when I have also TR mods to work on. It's a matter of priorities and my wife's patience Smile
Lately (last weeks), after finishing a big bulk of art tasks for Chapter III, I'm now back into "retro console gaming" love after setting up my RetroPie (my new love)...playing games (nintendo, sega, ps1, arcade, neo-geo...), watching "retro games history" videos on youtube...
But also doing tasks for TR mods and for BoA when needed.

Doom maintains a rather irregular presence in my gaming life. Lately I rather unexpectedly decided to go through a bunch of Doomworld's Top 100 WADs, starting with 1994 classics. Let's see... Slaughter Until Death, The Evil Unleashed, Return to Phobos, Serenity and its both sequels, Fava Beans, Crossing Acheron. Some of this stuff was surprisingly good considering how early it was made, especially The Innocent Crew's releases. Others brought mixed feelings and made me wonder if there really was nothing more deserving of a place on the Top 100 list (Fava Beans in particular was extremely easy, easier than vanilla Knee-Deep In The Dead; slick architecture is not enough to compensate for lack of meaningful gameplay). I'm currently at H2H-Xmas, which features a rather wild mix of bad Christmas-themed artwork and horrible MIDI Christmas songs with proto-slaughtermap gameplay (but only on some maps... others are surprisingly tame in comparison; others still are just multiplayer arenas with some monsters thrown in). Very rough around the edges, but still fun.

In contrast, I have also cleared the first 9 maps of Ancient Aliens. Wonderful mapping, but the difficulty ramps up rapidly and I already find myself saving and retrying many times just to survive some of the maps. Especially Map 09, Nectar Flow, was a tough nut to crack, being long, very heavy on the monster count, and putting the player in a deadly spot right from the start (a rare moment when partial invisibility actually helps).

EDIT: finished H2H-Xmas. Quite the rollercoaster, but not quite as great as GATHER2.WAD, where the jump in overall quality between maps 01-03 and 04-05 is truly staggering.

I love Doom. I had Doom before Wolf, actually. Still play the occasional Brutal Doom every so often. No mods though, I like the original one too much.

New DooM engine game (well, Episode 2 out of 3 just came out). And it's FREE! Standalone; no commercial product required.

I have played DOOM quite a lot. I have a collection of wads, but seems it is far from complete. Still working my way through them.

I can enjoy Doom if I'm in the frame of mind to do so, but it could be months or years apart before I experience a "Doom binge". I usually make a dive for Doom II when that happens, though - Episode 3 of Doom 1 was its highest point to me, and the other episodes before it ... it just couldn't compare for me.

Whenever I want to play Doom, I play Brutal Doom or Project Brutality.
Bash me if you want, but I played original Doom for so long that I....prefer it now in more modern pace. Scary, aggressive, fast. Brutal.

The way I see it, the slower pacing of Doom was more a fad than anything else. Fast-paced gameplay was the norm before Doom, and Wolf3D and classic arcade games were proof of that. Games like Quake brought fast pacing back to the forefront, and it made that fast pacing cool again. Too Cool

I love original Doom for all there is to love it for.
Everything good you can tell me about it, I already know.

But there is a reason Brutal was chosen "Mods of 2017" on Moddb. List of reasons actually, though it's a fashion nowdays to bash it for right and wrong reasons.
I have my eternal and huge respect to the classic, but I moved on on a practical level, what I would play in my limited time.
New level of fear, adrenaline...my heart is pumping playing latest Brutal Beta....everything is trying to kill you in most effective ways, surprise...killing satisfaction brought to a max.
Recent version is too scary even for me, it's hard for me to get asleep in recent nights after such play. So many "panic" moments, surprised, outnumbered, cornered, shot from all directions...Action is non-stop, immersive, details are so...well-thought, enemy placing is fantastic. Extermination Day mappack is....superb.
Doom cannot bring it to me anymore. Not like this.
I still play alot of retro games...on my retropie and not only. Even gonna build me arcade controller.
Recently played Quake and got a new appreciation of it, though was never a Quake fan...I still love playing retro games....but when it comes to Doom...it's impossible to get back to the classic after Brutal.

Now this one has some feature changes you don't see every day, without going completely into total conversion territory:

Definitely a beta ... note how the face and Armor indicator appear to be drawn on the same background. Impressive nonetheless.

I'm a big DOOM fan, as well as a big Wolf3D fan.

In addition to my playthroughs of Wolf3D mods, I also do Doom wads as well.

Speaking of Doom, I also did a bunch of demos for certain wads and uploaded them to DSDA:
