That's a hell of a short game.

Agreed, the size is kind of underwhelming. But it's certainly rare enough to qualify for my (incomplete) "hand-to-find" DOS games article. I still have one game left I can't track down - it's a 256-color VGA platform game that borrows its gameplay from Metroid and Turrican. It seems to have MOD-based music, and it runs poorly on many 80486s and PCs below that. I'm extremely irritated that I deleted this one, as now I can't even remember the game's name. Twisted Evil

You did better than me.... I entered the building on the first level, and was attacked and killed by 2 guys with water. The rubber chicken seemed to have no effect. Also, I died even though I had 35% health.

If you can recall the name of your missing game, I *might* just have it... think hard.

You don't use the rubber chicken at all; just move straight from the gate and directly to the staircase. You'll get the weapon you need in the next level.

This game sounds like a no-fun thing.

I didn't realise the staircase put you to the next level.

I'll try it again in the next few days... maybe I have to run past those 2 guards or something. We'll see.

If I figure it out, I'll add the usage to my web site of game hints and cheats, since the game comes with no instructions.

I say you use hints, but no cheats.
Cheating takes some of the fun and challenge away.

Well, no luck with Bobenstein. I can run past the guards, and I can see a floppy disk and some machines, then I'm dead. If the game had cheats, I'd use them. As it is, it's no fun at all.

This was how I ended up the first time I entered Level Two. It turns out there's this open circular room with a water gun inside, and it's next to where you first appear in the level. This is what you need to fight the guards. If you get to the guards first, you've already moved right past it.

OK I did find the water gun thing, it's in an alcove before you even get to the cookies. I still kept getting killed though. I suppose if I'm really sneaky and careful it might be possible to beat them. The real problem is dying with 35% health still remaining. If you died with 0%, like any other game, it would make more sense.

The water gun only works at close range. That being said, the enemies suffer from the same limitations.

Well, success with Bobenstein-3D at last.

I found another game by the same author on my win98 pc, called Zoom. While I was playing, I happened to notice it said CHEAT MODE in the top right corner, and my health stayed at 100%. It took a lot longer to find out how I'd managed to turn cheats on.

So, I decided to try the same trick on Bobenstein, and it worked! This made the game trivial to play, and I made it to the end in moments.

The cheat is enabled by pressing G, then Left-Alt.

Zoom is actually a much better game, and you can find it at those abandonware places. It does, however, suffer from the same problem of no sound.

A bit late to this thread but I've got the proper SDL version of Secrets of the Grauberg Dungeon. It has the seperate folder with the 20 or so HTM files for Read this plus some other stuff.

I've got almost every mod every released saved as well, including some that were "banned" shall we say? I've also got a few unreleased mods, The Japanese Version, and I've got all of AreyeP's work, including his withdrawn mod plus 3 developer versions of End of Destiny he gave me that were never released.

I think i'm at around 1300 mods so if anyone is desperately searching for something let me know.

Mods that were "banned" you say? Now I'm interested.

It probably relates to mods like Beyond Wolfenstein, which Apogee threatened legal action towards if it wasn't taken down.

If it's viable, I'd love the entire collection; I have a fairly large number of mods, but I know I'm still missing quite a lot. I was going to write something to download all of the links from Thomas's spreadsheet but like most other things in my life recently it rather fell by the wayside.

There's a mountain of stuff, I'm not sure the best way to get it to you.

I've kept all the versions of some releases as well, so there's sometimes as many as 10 releases of some mods along with source codes, sprites, screenshots and all sorts of other things as well.

And yeah, some mods were forcibly removed, some were also requested to be taken down by their creator.

If your internet's upload speed is up to it, you could zip it up and upload it to somewhere like Mediafire; otherwise I don't really know xP

Will Mediafire allow massive files though? For Free? I've got fast unlimited internet, so that's not a concern.

I believe their per-file limit is 4GB for free, so unless it zips to more than that, it should be fine Smile

Should I gather that we're going to approach Torrent-related territory here? In this case, there's nothing particularly wrong with that ... as long as you don't include releases that were pulled for the reasons posted here. Smile

I wonder if anyone would care about the distribution of Beyond Wolfenstein, at this point. I mean, when they were making RTCW, it was viable competition, but these days, Wolf3D is pretty separate from the modern games, and enough "TCs" have been made with unmodified resources to suggest that ID/Apogee/3D Realms/Raven Software/Machine Games no longer cares.
This is all opinion and speculation, though.

Well I can agree on this. So far, I haven't seen anyone from ID or whatever start arguing about copyright claims on here, or hell not even on ModDB, so I guess Beyond Wolfenstein wouldn't be as much of a problem as it was before.

It's still a problem, and that's partly because Beyond Wolfenstein claimed Id's work as someone else's. That was a major reason Id requested it to be pulled. Id never made an official announcement that Beyond Wolfenstein is legally in the clear. However long a game has been around makes no difference as to whether it should be distributed or not. Both Wolf3D *and* Doom are still being sold commercially. Let's wait for that to be changed before we start making claims we can't back up.

I don't think they still care about it. You can find it on lot websites to download. They probably were only worried back then to make sure enough people bought RTCW and then the original Wolf3D. Modding in general got lot bigger since then.

Unless someone goes through very old mails and is bored it's as much as problem as each 2nd mod that is released.
If they were really desperate for money one day they could pick almost any mod and start a lawsuit.
And as long as Bethesda can make money out of it they won't release the original to public domain.
If you arent a rich, public known modder or host a website with a zillion copyright breaking mods i don't think they will ever come back.
Of course you never know with such business people.

Btw. why is this topic not in mod section ><

I am, by no means, suggesting that we go into too many legal grey areas, considering how many modding already make. If I recall correctly, the creator of Beyond Wolfenstein had 4 lines of text for the "credits", denoting him as the graphic designer, sound producer, mapper, etc. I'm not sure if this is meant to refer to the assets that he did create, but as I recall, there were some graphics stolen from Wolfendoom: Operation Rheingold in Beyond Wolfenstein II, so I suppose plagiarism is the most likely explanation.

I would like to emphasize that I do not support piracy, however, I have some qualms about Wolf3D and Doom being sold in the manner that they are. The sole reason for my hesitation is because ID was a small, creative company, and like nearly all of their kind, they've been absorbed into a vast conglomerate that seems to excel at recycling that which is tried and true, without much new. Wolf3D, Doom, Quake, they were all revolutionary; each brought a new concept to the table. In purchasing these games, I would want to support the creative force behind them, not the people who aquired their companies.

My two cents here:

Atina wrote:

The Wolfenstein series has had a number of follow-ups in the past few years, so if someone did a search for the game, any recent uploads are bound to show up in the search engine. Yes, uploads that are many years old are a different story. But all you have to do is slip up one time in the wrong place, and you have a serious problem on your hands.

Quote:

I think they'll keep its current status like it is, and I don't see that changing unless and until the company is bought out by someone else. Re-releasing much older products as Freeware *is* a good business move depending on what it is and how it's done. But many companies have only seen it done the wrong way, so they think it shouldn't be done ... ever. A good business leader would know different, but from what I've seen of this company in recent years, I don't think the leader of this business is a very good one.

There was more than one reason, but that was one of them. The other was unmodified files for Wolf3D included in the mod. The VGADICCT file will never be part of the deal breaker, though; it's exactly the same as the Shareware file as far as I can tell.

I think there will always be reasons not to support companies who did admirable work in the past, and whether these reasons are good ones or not is debatable. Thankfully, gamers have become *much* more vocal about how companies and their representatives treat them, what their products lack, and what is simply a bad move. The Internet has enabled anonymous posting from the common consumer. And as much of a bad rap as the Internet might get, this is one of the positive things about it.
