Like the title says: what are your biggest gripes when it comes to Wolf3D mods? Obvious contenders are stuff like endless mazes and not being able to get 100% ratios because of mapping flaws. Any other often encountered problems or annoyances? Asking for scientific purposes. Razz

Yes, the mazes and not getting 100% treasure are annoying, I agree.
For me though is getting shot through a wall/corner when you think you’re out of sight of the enemy. I have encountered that many times, but for some reason, floor 35 White Castle of Atomprojekt comes to mind.

Needed (non bonus) keys inside secrets.
Long backtracking.
Too hard even on baby skill "I make it for diehards only" mods. There should be at least one skill for normal folks.
Use of Doom art - too recognizable.
More than 4 keys.

The "maps don't work correctly" has always been my biggest beef with many fan mods. The 100% rant is also legitimate to me; give the player of your work the ability to get 100% of everything; don't decide for them whether they can get it or not. It's a complaint I hear often when E2M8 of the original is discussed.

Another gripe - allowing the player to walk through walls. For 3-D Directional Sprites, this looks fine. But for actual walls in the map, it doesn't. It always looks like a glitch in the game.

Lastly, the "enemies seeing and/or biting you" from rooms you can't even see. This is done by having walls connected in the maps only by their corners.

Is this for a paper for college or something of an academic nature? I am genuinely curious. It's perfectly fine if you'd rather not tell.

As for me, what takes the cake is the inability to get perfect ratios. To be clear: I am talking specifically about maps where it is literally impossible to do so no matter what you do or don't do (because the mapper either overlooked a design mistake or he/she introduced the inability on purpose); I am not talking about maps where it can become impossible to accomplish this if the player does things in a certain undesired way or order (for example, by pushing a group of pushwalls in a certain way/order whereby not every item of treasure behind them becomes accessible).

Second would probably be getting stuck somewhere (a room or a series of rooms) without any possible exit but to restart the level or back to a saved game. This one bothers me quite a bit, to be honest.

Third was from back in the DOS days (don't know if this one's valid for your survey since it is now an extinct glitch if we only consider SDL mods, ronwolf1705), but some of you may remember when objects would disappear from the screen when a bit too many were visible to the player simultaneously. I really hated this one, I remember.

There are more, but off the top of my head those would likely make my top three.

Best,

Ariel

Wide, undecorated rectangular rooms are a nuisance in my opinion, as they vastly slow down the game. Often, I find that they're coupled with the "invisible enemy" glitch, because the rooms are just about full with ammo, health, bosses, and Pac-Man ghosts.

Haha no, it's not exactly for academic purposes. Though I might use it for something later on, so I can't reveal the purpose just yet Mr Green

Most of my reasons have already been stated: too many objects causing some to vanish, unable to get 100% of everything, getting stuck, required keys being in unadorned secret places (I don't mind so much if the secret is obvious).

There's a version of Wolf4SDL around that keeps consuming ammo even when you have the maximum allowed.

Lots of boring empty rooms. Lots of twisty passages that serve no purpose. Not enough ammo or first aid.

Rooms with heaps of guards who protect nothing. You'd expect a room full of guards to be there for a reason.

Cheats disabled or crippled. I won't even play these mods.

I don't mind being able to walk through a wall when it's intentional.

Mapping errors such as inaccessible areas, suddenly turning round and round uncontrollably, treasure and guards stuck in walls, and other things that should be obvious from the mapping tool are all annoying too.

insufficient ammo or health, too hard to find keys, too much treasure hidden in secret walls, hero weapon response is slower than enemy weapon, so many small rooms and doors to open and explore (one author make such annoying mods. i forgot his name), so many similar rooms and halls without much difference in action, multiple complicated secret walls which block us to move further or which lock us inside, too many dogs than enemies, too many enemies to handle without much ammo where we have to run in particular paths to avoid them ( i find it annoying rather than entertaining because it make us belittle and timid in the game action ), creeper trees blocking view of the enemy where we can't shoot them but enemy shoots you.

i can write some more bad things in mods if i spare more time but these are enough grievances for now. half of these grievances here are pointing to well known authors here who never think on players side but they feel proud for making a diehard / difficult game which normal gamers cannot play. but remember that you will be remembered only when many enthusiasts play your game and end it in fashion.

And not to forget too crazy enemy accuracy over distance Smile
Pixel-accuracy death traps to avoid not fun as well.

I would add fighting a hard-to-beat boss for the first time and not knowing how much ammo you need to kill him.

Hmmm...I know I can't stand poorly placed decorations, it really pulls me out of the mod sometimes if I come across "unrealistically" decorated areas in a mod where everything else seems to aim to look realistic.

Mazes are a big buzz kill for me as well. I'm impatient by nature though, but I've given up on otherwise fantastic mods due to getting stuck on a single confusing level...
