If you force joystick and mouse players into using the WSAD control scheme, it's going to backfire badly. The way Wolf3D is designed, strafing only works well with the mouse. The last thing you want to do is draw more attention to a feature that doesn't work well.

I never suggested that you should force anyone into using WSAD, all I said that if you want to reach any new audience having the *option* of WSAD is a must. I disagree that strafing only works well with a mouse, for me its quite the opposite - mouse is the worst input device for me to strafe with. I do not feel anything strange when playing with WSAD, it works just fine - as if I was playing Half-Life or some other late 90ties shooter, the game handles just as it is supposed to.

It's quite easy to strafe with the mouse if you practice the technique a lot. You do need to set yourself up well to take advantage of it. And if you do, since mouse movement can be accelerated more than keyboard, your strafe can be almost instant - so fast you can strafe in and out of cover between shots of your machinegun. It feels very natural.

What do you mean it doesn't run? If other Wolf4SDL builds run on your computer there is absolutely no reason this shouldn't... I ran it on multiple devices and with multiple different platforms (Windows, Linux and amrhf Linux) without issues. If you are running it on Linux than run it in terminal and tell me what it says.

Do you mean that you have low framerate? - if so than run it in a lower resolution and/or windowed (with --res and --windowed[-mouse] parameters)

The error was that some entrypoint wasn't found in the kernel, which means it isn't going to work on Windows 98.

I've been able to run plenty of other Wolf4SDL mods on Win98SE, but not this one, it seems.

Wow. I'm honestly amazed someone would still be using win 98, how are you even able to get around in this world and do your daily computing? Yea, modern Windows suck badly, but you have plenty of modern and relevant GNU/Linux flavors to choose from.

Anyway, your problem is likely caused by the fact that this mod is using SDL2 instead of SDL. I chose SDL2 because the old SDL 1.2 was triggering some AVs in modern windows and I wanted to make the game more accessible to newcomers. The DOS version of the mod i originally released in 2016 will work on your win 98 PC. The DOS version is not 100% the same and it contains more bugs, but for the most part it is the same game.

You misunderstand. The Win98 computer is especially set up for DOS-based 3D FPS-type games, such as Wolf3D, Doom, and many others. I can simply install the game, make a desktop icon, and away it goes. It has nothing to do with what people normally do with computers these days.

Yes, the error came from SDL2. Looking it up, it seems they only support back to XP.

I have no clue about Linux etc, and would never go there.

Perhaps you could link to the DOS version? Thanks.

All of the versions, including the DOS version, are available on moddb.

Tried this out and it works pretty well. Only got to level 4 so far.

I like that the doors stay open, makes it easy to see if you've missed a passage or room. Also I like that the map shows secret rooms, even though they haven't been found yet.

As for treasures and so on, the colours used make it a bit hard to see what I'm picking up, but I suppose that could be a problem in DOS. Maybe using thousands of colours would make things clearer.

The main problem is on the screen with the total items and so on, the percentages are completely unreadable, just a red mass.

I'll continue on as time permits.
