Play Berserk. It can be found easily online and is a fun classic arcade game that inspired the original Castle Wolfenstein (which you should play too, and there is a dosbox version).

If you haven't played it, the original Unreal is fantastic (make sure you play it with the music on).

I really like the Catacomb games, if you have not played them. Interesting aesthetics choices given the limited pallet, although admittedly the gameplay is a bit repetitive. I also reccomend Blake Stone, if you have not tried it.

I play non-Wolfenstein engine related games sometimes too. Razz

Are you talking about DOS-based games, and which type of games did you have in mind?

Here's a bit of retro news that I missed myself until tonight:

Genre at least?

Just PC or old console roms as well?

I'd advise you good pack of Commander Keen mods. This is very active and creative modding community. There are tons of fantastic mods there to explore, of commercial quality.
In general Apogee games are fun... Dangerous Dave? Bio Menace?
Rise of the Triad is fun shooter still.

Here's the three that came to mind first:

Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpK38vAErng

Not long ago I played a few races for old times' sake. Great game. Fantastic soundtrack. Nice memories.

And here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grXkzisSEM4

Awesome graphics and very cool music to go with it. At the time I remember thinking this was probably among the best DOS games out there.

Last but not least: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5cu5h_150Y

If you liked Prince of Persia, you might enjoy this platformer as well. From the same guys that did "Out of this World". Great storyline and playability. Superb game.

Best,

Ariel

Be sure to download the latest, unofficial patch, 227i. This will provide more stability and options to play Unreal on Windows 7, 8, and 10 systems.

Funny for them to release Jill as freeware just months after putting it on GOG.com.

Not that I minded paying for them.

One of my favs as well.

Other DOS games I loved to play back in the days:
Worms, Scorched Earth, Supaplex, Sharkey's House of Pool, Commander Keen, Skyroads, Terminal Velocity, European Championship 1992, Shadow Knights, Duke Nukem, Tuneller, a golf game I can't remember now... this is a list of classics...Jill, Vynil Goddess of Mars, Dyna Blaster, Golden Axe, Tim1/2 etc....

Would recommend to play Super Mario War (even made custom skins for it)

Hate RPG, Quests, Real Time Strategy and such....so I mostly can offer puzzles, racing games, shooters, platformers, fighting games, arcade games, board games.
Do you want good ones or just rare/lesser known ones?
If we talk emulators/retro consoles - list of recommendations is endless, as I have both retropie (with above 6000 retro console games over some dozens retro systems), ldk and had RS97 as well (till it broke down).
I'm quite an expert by now on retro consoles (even bootleg roms and hacks).
So....gimme something to work with, some limitations....genre, 8bit/16bit/32bit, 1/2 player etc. And do you have Emulation Station installed to play those?
Would recommend buying retropie, if you don't have one already. One of my best buys from aliexpress.

Sure, tons of them. What's your preference? Doom, Wolf3D, Duke3D, Commander Keen? Have quite a selection for each.

Then try "In Purcuit of Greed", "Witchaven 1/2" (other Build Engine classics - Redneck Rampage, PowerSlave....)

Well, do you want some rare and yet good/fun games, being aware of the classics? It's not like you wait for my recommendations to play Mario or Sonic...
Please, as least genre....gimme some hints of what you like/prefer most, something to work with.
Without those - try Puyo Puyo, fun tetris-like game. This game is on most systems - mame/megadrive/snes, even nes.
There is also nice unlicensed tetris on nes with full coop mode, my wife and me enjoy it (can send).
Try Metal Slug on neogeo...CT Special Forces on gba....Shaman King on gba. Ristar on Sega.....
Really, I can keep on and on.

For Duke Nukem I'd recommend at first - "Duke Nukem Forever" (mod, not game) and AMC TC. Those are pretty famous. There are other interesting entries, like "Duke Forces" etc...

Doom mods - there are many I liked...really. Some interesting creations.
Including "Cold as Hell", "Brutal Doom", "Pitate Doom", "Castlevania Simon's Destiny", "Phobos Revisited", "Hocus Pocus TC", "Torment and Torture", "Batman Doom", "Inquisitor" (if you like this kind of gameplay), Operation BodyCount TC, Golden Souls, Adventures of Square....

Wolf3D - there are many mods I like, most you can easily search this forum for, there ware "favourite mod" threads here.

I've already listed some rare Dos games already, that most of people here didn't get to play.
Can add "Wilson ProStaff Golf", very nice game. Arcade VolleyBall. Tubular Worlds.

I have some games really noone knows of, from my old shareware CD. It was new even to DOS game collector/expert.

I will second DoomJedi on Skyroads. Strangely addictive.

I would also like to recommend Bad Toys 3D and XEvil, if you want some obscure 90s games. I first played them from a shovelware disc. This also reminded me of the existence of a game called TOU - Tunnels of the Underworld, which my brothers liked off that same disc.

I actually own a boxed version of In Pursuit of Greed that I found at a thrift store hidden among the board games.

Also, to note - this is one of those games (like ROTT) where shareware has different levels, and even art resolution - so it's nice to try playing both.
End result and shareware are very different.

Specifically it was Bad Toys 3D and XEvil that I got off that disc. There were quite a few of those sort of discs back in the 1990s, when download speeds were very limited. I had great fun as a kid poking at each of the games, even though they were largely mediocre. I remember there was a rather simplistic Pokemon rip-off called Battle Pets, which was funny since I never actually played Pokemon.

I collect old software CDs now from thrift stores, have quite a collection. Nowadays, the closest experience is probably the Internet Archive Classic PC Games collection (formerly from Demu).

Well, for Nintendo ir would be long list:
StarTropics, Journey to Silius, Kick Master, S.C.A.T, Ninja Kun series (especially try the lesser known ones - Ninja JajaMaru-Kun, Ashura no Shou, Jajamaru no Daibouken...), M.U.S.C.L.E, Kickle Cubicle, Conquest of the Crystal Palace, Adventures of Lolo (puzzle), Don Doko Don, Castle of Dragon, Choujin Sentei Jetman, Clash at Demonhead, Cosmic Epsilon, Cross Fire, Crystal Mines, Dragon Fighter, Dragon Ninja, Hammerin' Harry, Hana no Star Kaidou, Huang Di, King's Knight, Fire & Ice (puzzle), Moon Crystal, Recca, Tetris (tengen), Whomp 'em...
A bit more known - PowerBlade 1/2, Shatterhand, Flappy, Street Fighter 2010, Wrecking Crew etc...
There are nice hacks too... Game Party is nice.

For PC engine I like "new adventure island', batman, splatterhouse, cratemaze (booby kids on nintendo), legend of hero tonma (also on mame), liquid kids (also on mame), tiger road (also on mame), juuouku (altered beast), parodius....

Will continue with other systems later...

Like this one:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/qo88phsldsgxr6a/skaph.rar?dl=0

It's from my old hebrew "200 in 1 shareware" CD...have some other rare ones. Remember other good such shareware CDs from that era (were popular at the time), would collect them now if I could.

And what are these games from the shareware cd? Smile

Interesting I will check it in the morning it's rare seeing shareware in hebrew the only shareware cd I have is סדרת הינשוף 1(english name the owl series) but because it's in hebrew it showed random letters when I tried to play it it used to work on my first pc which was win 98 the hebrew version also if you are interested i have alot of old cds from the series איתמר וגורדי ( english name Timmy & gordi ) and games from סדרת הדובדבן
(english name the cherry series)
Smile

You're welcome Smile

For more DOS games you can try Xatax for example....can list more, but you have plenty by now already Smile
Obviously classics are Secret Agent, Crystal Caves, Hocus Pocus, Tyrian, Prehistoric 2, Hexxagon, Liero and many more I can list, didn't list those as I'm sure you're aware of them.

for Doom mods - there is wonderful "Return of the Triad" mod as well, and really many others - "Ashes 2023" for example, very good mod. "Ancient Aliens", "Hellfire: School", others.
Here you can find many nice Doom mods from russian Doom youtuber/streamer:

Well, CD Cover/menu are in hebrew, but games are known english worldwide games. That game is german actually it seems.
Still have the original CD, working. Many lesser known (or not known) 3D titles there, including Modem 3D, Legend of 7 Paladins, Deadline (3D) etc etc....

There is a site or two in hebrew that has all hebrew Shareware CDs ever - listed (and there are plenty)...like this one:
https://www.old-games.org/f/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=20541
I remember some (at least one other) myself from that time, too bad I didn't collect such CDs back then, it's important gaming history, and have some rare DOS games, maybe some didn't get a release eventually.
