Hi gang!
About 14-16 years ago I played a Wolf3d based game, that I'm now trying to find.
As an adult I've recently started revisiting a few of weirdest encounters that I still remember from my childhood.
I've managed to find pretty much all of them now, which has been a lot of fun btw, but there's one very important missing. Sad

Here's what I remember:
In the very last level, I start in the middle of the map. I work my way out of some small corridors to a big spacious area.
- I encounter a few guards, and the final boss. AFTER defeating him, I check for secret areas, instead of walking out into freedom (and ending the game).
- I do find a secret area and this triggers these huge skulls to suddenly spawn as I walk back into the spacious area. They are invulnerable and kills you when they get up close (basically pacman ghosts with a skin).
- I can still win by running to the door that leaves to freedom, but they are difficult to pass.
They really scared the shit out of me as a kid, and I'd love to replay that level today.
Initially I thought it could be wolfdoom, but after watching countless hours of Youtube walkthroughs of wolfdoom and similar mods/clones, I simply still can't find them.
I reeaaally hope someone in this board have encountered this and knows exactly what I'm talking about. Smile

Here's how I remember the map in an ultra simplified version:

and after the skull monsters are triggered:

Also:
Just wanna say THANK YOU SO MUCH to everyone in this community who helped make these games (if you are still around).
We couldn't really afford any of the AAA games when I grew up, and I can't tell you how many of the free wolf3d mods I've completed.
I think I must have gone through almost all of them back then, and I have NO REGRETS! Very Happy

My first guess would still be WolfenDoom because it definitely has Pacman ghosts reskinned as skulls and it has a map that more or less resembles your description, though some aspects of the topography aren't a perfect match, and it's not the very last level (it's E3M9). Still, have a look and see if that's it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Wx8V-bhrEs&list=PLgS1ZoidySwPZK7ImBHJ8mNTaHsL0rQjt&index=31&t=0s

Wow that was quick, yes DEFINITELY that level. Iím sure the freedom jump has made me think it mustíve been the last level.
Now what Iím missing is someone being able to trigger those skulls. Iíll try and search Youtube for this specific level and see if I can find someone who encounters them.
Thank you!!

Hmm From what I can see that video is the only walkthrough of that level Sad
I also canít find these skulls mentioned in the wiki. Does AReyeP still roam this board? I will try and reach out to him.

If I remember correctly I encountered with them on episode 1 maybe, I played it like 5 years ago or so, can't remember.

EDIT 1: Sadly AReyeP didn't log in since 13 I think.

EDIT 2: Checked the gamemaps, its really the last level of episode 3, they can be found in 3 different rooms, I am not sure they can leave that or they can be accessed without cheating... unless they can open doors and can teleport out from their room.

You can actually briefly see one of these skulls at 8:18 in the video I linked, though the player doesn't stick around for long enough to really tangle with them. I believe they're triggered by shooting at the Imps guarding the blue keycard.

They also show up in certain other maps throughout the mod, often secret ones. You can see them in this video of E5M10, for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdK833aQCzg&list=PLgS1ZoidySwPZK7ImBHJ8mNTaHsL0rQjt&index=46
