Greetings all.

Those of you who have been involved in the Wolf3D modding community for a long time may remember Lance's Wolfenstein 3D Page, last updated in 1999. Therein was advertised an upcoming mod, Operation:Wasserstein. Believe it or not, that mod is now in production again, and this time it will be completed, though I do not have a deadline set.

Operation:Wasserstein is essentially a re-telling of the Nocturnal Missions, woven together with the Eisenfaust super-soldier programme. It will be approximately the length of Spear of Destiny, and the levels are rather large and intricate, spanning the abandoned basement levels of the castle through the living quarters, office floors, labs, etc.

The previous incarnation of the mod suffered a severe and irrecoverable code glitch. Unfortunately, I no longer have any copies of the original. DJ Blazkowicz, BJ Rowan, and Gary Ragland, my beta testers, are the only possible sources for the original files, and even then I rather doubt after 20 years they would still have them!

The new mod is using ECWolf as its base, and has been in development a couple years now, mostly as a hobby project to finish what I started 20 years ago. Please see attached some screenshots.

My thanks are due to whomever created the Wolf3d Wiki page on Operation:Wasserstein. I hope to now shortly release a mod that has been literally 20 years in the making!

Looks very cool! I like the checkered floors.

Very nice, I remember the name Wasserstein from browsing old Dome news recently. The mapping looks interesting at first glance, so this should be good.

You're very welcome. I enjoy creating Wiki articles, first and foremost because of the importance of every small step taken in Wolfenstein 3D modding history, in addition to getting a personal kick from endless research and scouring the Dome archives. Every time I look I catch something new. Even after all these years.

Can you confirm that it was indeed possible at a time to download the mod? I distinctly remember playing it ages ago, and I remember Andy Nonymous (if you knew/remember) him had it as well. In actual fact I tried to nick the nice brown marble texture with the sign on it for a mod of my own... Lol... And did you have other projects in the pipeline at any time, or did you participate in any collaborations?

Utterly thrilled to see you are back after all this time and finally getting this mod out there. It's amazing how after such a long time people return. There is hope for us all that numerous of bygone members will come back too, then... I suppose.

I still find it fascinating that Gary and B.J. Rowan beta tested this mod, as they were probably the best map makers of classic Wolfenstein 3D. Their stuff still holds up. And judging by your screenshots, you obviously know what you are doing. What I would like to know is if you would release the source, either externally or internally, for a possible SDL port?

Cheers! And welcome back.

I never publicly released any playable part of the mod. If it were online, then I suppose one of my beta testers would've had to have shared it, as they were the only persons besides myself to ever have the files. Believe me, if someone still had them, I would love to receive a copy, as I've long since lost them.

I did not have any other Wolfenstein projects at the time, and was not actively working with other modders. Wasserstein was a pet project. It had been pretty well forgotten as far as I was concerned, until about 3 years ago when I decided it may be fun to revisit the idea.

Regarding releasing the source code: I am making this with ECWolf, as I deemed it more practical than editing the original Wolf3D source. I don't know much about porting that to SDL, but I would certainly be open to if if it were a possibility.

Are Gary and BJ Rowan still around? I'd be curious to know if they remember playing my old beta.

Judging from the screenshots the only thing that would pose a problem sdl wise is the higher-res weapon sprites in conjunction with the x64 sprites

Looks very good! Smile

But I think you should remove the light shining on the floor from the ceiling light and floor lamp sprites when you use textured floors.

I always do that when I use textured floors and ceilings. The floors look better without it in my opinion. I also remove the shadows from tables and other sprites when using textured floors.
