Here you can see an EGA frame of the SS Guard, that was never converted to VGA. It looks as if it he's surrendering to BJ.

I find this really interesting! Perhaps this May, we'll be given the same treatment the Doom community got yesterday. Romero released a bunch of pictures of Doom beta material. So keep your fingers crossed.

That's very consistent with what I see in the original WL_ACT2.CPP code; there's "surrender" statetypes for enemy types like the SS, Mutant, and so on. These statetypes are created in the code, but aren't initiated or used in any way. BTW, the statetypes have the words "give up".

So they don't work at all? Or is there an idea on how they would work?

I knew of something about a "nude" guard body in the code or something. I'm guessing it had to do with taking their uniforms.

That's a cute art style, I'd like to see a cartoony Wolf mod, EGA or VGA doesn't matter.

I'm sure they would've been coded like Rise Of The Triad, although the "play dead" feature would've been removed. They'd simply kneel there with their hands up for the rest of the level.

Lol yes Schabbs only produced mutant brains in their beta stage before they got assembled...

This pic is great. I know several mods, mainly older ones (e.g. something called Missing in Action from 2002 or something) used SS surrender sprites that the author made himself. If I recall correctly, that particular mod used them as treasure sprites or block objects.

I think the mutants at one point were not mutants. They could've been Volksstrum or Hitler Youth, but this is just me guessing. That would make more sense of their "surrender"

I think Romero will release some interesting stuff this May, from what I hear the machines that were used to create Keen, Wolf, Doom, etc. have been found again, with some cool stuff in them.

I also suspect a Gatling gun guard could've been possible. Maybe an embryonic Hitler ghost? This is all a bizarre mixture of guesswork and wishful thinking.

I had no idea the machines were lost. Usually the issue is that the data is stored on 3.5 floppy disks, and the disks develop "problems" over time, or the disk drive becomes misaligned, so no other drives can read the disk when the drive goes bad. This misalignment problem didn't exist at all with 5.25 disks AFAIK, so as problematic as the 5.25 disks were, they were far more likely to work twenty years later if you gave them proper maintenance.
