Sorry. This is about https://groups.yahoo.com/ , https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/diehardwolfers/conversations/messages , or any other Wolfenstein Yahoo groups that you might find that you want to archive.

I joined Yahoo mail in November or December 1999 when you could only have 6 megabytes in your email inbox! Now itís enough space for a lifetime. I joined Yahoo groups to look for groups for Photoshop help, other computer graphics help, lovely Playboy model photos, and video game mod files. Now a Yahoo group only allows 100 MB. 100 MB is not enough for all the Wolf 3D mods.

I saw one page that said that Yahoo groups canít be updated on or after October 21. I saw one different page that said that Yahoo groups canít be updated on or after October 28. I thought that youíd want to know and hereís the message from https://groups.yahoo.com/

Attention: Starting December 14, 2019 Yahoo Groups will no longer host user created content on its sites. New content can no longer be uploaded after October 28, 2019. Sending/Receiving email functionality is not going away, you can continue to communicate via any email client with your group members. (Then thereís a link about downloading your file archives.)

You're welcome.

Since Ryu-sama posted, there was a moderator/administrator of a Yahoo Math programming group that posted an email and I had read the message. He said that he is now setting the Math group to read only and trying to archive it onto groups.io if I'm understanding this. Nobody told me about groups.io. I suppose if the DHW moderators/administrators are reading the message in the thread that I'm typing in right now, then they can archive it onto groups.io?

Can't see how this is remotely noteworthy. That Yahoo group hasn't seen activity in over 10 years. Also, this doesn't belong here. This subforum is for questions and answers about THIS SITE.

Moving to Howling Wolfers.

I agree with you - the Y!group wasn't that active lately.

It's also alright to move this thread to "Howling Wolfers".

Still, this news is interesting for me as I am member of a couple of groups.

There has been a heavy effort to archive older Wolfenstein content, as older websites start to fade into obscurity and information is lost.

A lot of what was here originally is gone too, and a lot forgotten. I don't know if there's any evidence of Nate Smith and his controversy/career beyond a page on the Dome, and some messages on the old Yahoo Group. It would be nice to have all the important stuff archived. It's good to have the initial events preserved for reference.

It's a part of this community's history, and even included in the header above Very Happy

Edit: Thanks to some keen members over on Discord, we have a text archive of the Yahoo Group.

I've uploaded them to my website, and you can access the links at least for now on http://wolf3d.net/pushwall/ or any of these convenient links:

DieHard Wolfers Yahoo Archives
(2001) (2002) (2003) (2004) (2005) (2006) (2008) (2019)

A nice slice of history. If anyone is interested in seeing the chat as it was 18 years ago, give these a browse.

Quite a part of this has already been done way back in 2007 (see http://diehardwolfers.areyep.com/viewtopic.php?t=4327) but it's good to see a more complete mirror of it, in a more professional format, on a more reliable host. Thanks Zombie_Plan!

All content will be deleted on December 14, 2019
From an article here: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2019/10/yahoo-is-deleting-all-content-ever-posted-to-yahoo-groups/

Yahoo Groups is shutting down after more than 18 years, and the Verizon-owned company is deleting all content from the site in mid-December.

"Yahoo has made the decision to no longer allow users to upload content to the Yahoo Groups site," the company said in a notice to users. "Beginning October 28, you won't be able to upload any more content to the site, and as of December 14 all previously posted content on the site will be permanently removed. You'll have until that date to save anything you've uploaded."

The notice links to one Yahoo webpage that provides instructions for downloading photos and files from groups that you belong to before the cutoff date, but the process sounds laborious, as it requires clicking on each photo or file you want to download. The shutdown notice also links to a page that provides instructions for requesting a download of all your Yahoo data. This page notes that "It can take up to 30 days for the request to finish processing and the download to become available."

Although the Yahoo Groups site will continue to exist after December 14, "all public groups will be made private or restricted," Yahoo said. Users will continue to "be able to communicate with your groups via email and search for private groups on the site," and admins will retain "limited access to group settings and administration tools," but that's it.

All of the following features are going away, Yahoo said:

Files
Polls
Links
Photos
Folders
Calendar
Database
Attachments
Conversations
Email Updates
Message Digest
Message History

If anyone is aware of other Wolfenstein related Yahoo Groups, it would be pertinent to mention them here as soon as possible. It might be worth checking them out to save anything else noteworthy?

- I believe that there are ROTT and Blake Stone mods to archive from The Dome. I have all of The Dome files.
- If anybody has old mods from fileplanet.com, then they should be archived too.
- What about archiving from https://www.moddb.com/ ?
- Any update from Barry Christian about his wolfenvault.com? About a year ago, I sent him a message about something that wouldn't have taken up very much of his time and he didn't respond. Let's archive mods from his page.
- I have a mod from Gary Fortin, a DOS Barneystein game not on The Dome, Rise of The Triad files, and I had forgotten to send them all to Zombie_Plan.
- I'd have to check and see if I have Beyond Wolfenstein 2. I emailed it to Brian and he said that it was once on The Dome until ID Software or 3D Realms told him to take it down. Somebody please explain. Should we archive Beyond Wolfenstein 2? This is the DOS version and not the version converted to SDL by OMJ.

As far as groups.io, which I mentioned, I might join it for different hobbies with different circles of friends.

TheTalentedMrLeo, I didn't remember to mention in a timely manner 2 days ago that I'm now less interested in archiving The Diehard Wolfers Yahoo group onto groups.io.

Zombie_Plan, who's Nate Smith and what do you think he said or did?

Zombie_Plan, In February or March, I said that I'd send the Wolf filetrip.com files to you. Then I had forgotten. I need to do this another day.

Nate Smith is the creator of this game! Surprise!

You can read a summary of Nate's modding history and impact at http://www.wolfenstein3d.co.uk/adds_natesmith.htm, written by Andy_Nonymous. Combined with http://diehardwolfers.areyep.com/bunker/takenote.htm that should give you a basic understanding of what happened regarding Beyond Wolfenstein II.

Edit: I'd also be interested to hear if there's anything in the capstonegames group; there's no public mods for Corridor 7 or Operation Body Count that I am aware of, or any knowledge of any that were in production, barring Mishran's mentions.

I posted here at http://wolf3d.darkbb.com/t3620-whats-the-best-web-site-archiving-tool-for-yahoo-groups#30489 when Diehard Wolfers was down for awhile. Will somebody please send me a private message on either forum about the best web archiving tool to use? I need to learn more about this and be more tech savvy.

Zombie_Plan, to try to answer your question about the capstonegames group, I really donít know. I clicked the join button last week and they havenít approved me for some reason.

Wow, this is pretty crazy scary.

Quote:
"Regarding the 128 people who joined Yahoo Groups with the goal to archive them Ė are those people from Archiveteam.org? If so, their actions violated our Terms of Service. Because of this violation, we are unable reauthorize them," Verizon said.

WHAT VIOLATION?! WHAT ARE YOU ACHIEVING BY DOING THIS? WHAT INTEGRITY IS UPHELD HERE?

Quote:

The Yahoo Groups Archive Team argues that it is facing a near total "80% loss of data" because Verizon is blocking the team members' email accounts.

THATS A BIG CHUNK.

Indeed. Luckily I am not familiar with Verizon, but it seems as if the blocking is a mere power trip without any deeper meaning or purpose; sadly typical of way too many businesses.

Zombie_Plan, I tried joining the Capstonegames group. After 2 weeks, I had gotten an automated message that thereís nobody to approve my membership, so it was denied. I canít remember the name of the other group that I tried to join in October where I was denied. - Oh, whoís Mishran and what did he or she type?

Thomas, if youíre not familiar with Verizon, I think that my smartphoneís and my parentsí smartphonesí plans are through Verizon.

They run the only (afaik) Corridor 7 fan site, at http://corridor7.tripod.com. In the past, they mentioned editing maps in Corridor 7, but nothing got released that I am aware of.

Please briefly read my comment from today at http://wolf3d.darkbb.com/t3620-whats-the-best-web-site-archiving-tool-for-yahoo-groups#30513 . Iím trying to learn the archiving programs to download other Wolfenstein groups, and other interests that Iíve mentioned.

On somebody's web site that I saw today, he typed that Yahoo is now giving people until a certain day in January to download all the groups content. EDIT: Yes, but I re-found the page at https://www.searchenginejournal.com/yahoo-extends-deadline-for-deletion-of-yahoo-groups-data/340033/#close and I had forgotten to mention that Yahoo Groups still wonít be visible after December 14.

So I looked at this non-Python program at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRs5vCtHdC8 , downloaded the program, turned off 2 step authentication, and it still didn't work.

I went to https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/diehardwolfers/conversations/messages , looked up the T Cookie, the Y Cookie, and told serpens about it. Whatever I was doing this morning in Python it didn't work.

To be honest, I don't want to take up a lot of your time. If I'm learning this and it takes too much of your time, then I don't want to bother you for very long. Python seems to have a high learning curve for me.

What other recommended web site is easiest to learn Python if somebody now believes that we now have until January to get all the group files we want? I'm going to spend hours tomorrow trying to archive.

= = = = = =

Zombie_Plan, on the topic of archiving, please archive this: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~jimw/games/

In 2015, Jim W from the high resolution texture packs complained that his vision was deteriorating, but he gave me permission to archive his page. In 2017, I messaged him again and he never messaged back for some reason.
