The vocoder bits kind of killed it for me, but I do like her range. I suppose the vocoder thing could be a nod to some other artist, but it's something I'm simply not a fan of. Sad

^ That's really sad news. I really like Rush. My condolences and thoughts go to his family.

For whatever it's worth, a guitarist and I have got together and collaborated a little bit. When I had "There's Trouble Ahead" recorded in WAV and FLAC form, the more genuine instruments seem to have left something out in their transition. I'm pretty sure the Dulcimer needs to be replaced with a Celesta instead of a Vibraphone, but the guitar portion is still missing something. I've provided him a recording without the guitar section so he can play the guitar part himself and re-record it. I'll see how that comes out. In the meantime, I've redone that Hot Butter instrumental "Popcorn" with different instruments and had it extracted to WAV and FLAC form. I used a Midi file version of the track that I found online. I'm very happy with how the newest FLAC version came out, and I'm ready to move on to another instrumental.

Two female musicians are on the to-hire list. One works in Handel's Ice Cream of all places, and the other one is the daughter of someone I knew several years back. This is all part of the layout for an actual band. I'll have a computerized recording provide the missing instruments until actual musicians can come in and there's a real band behind everything. Of course, we have to have a place to actually record before that ever happens ...

Tricob, have you ever played around with Open ModPlug Tracker? You can import midi files into it. The sound is pretty amazing - and it's free.

I'll have to check it out; thanks for the recommendation. I currently use SynthFont to convert my Midi files to WAV. There are times when I'm not totally happy with the results ... basically with very fast String Arrangements on a certain octave. It sounds either too artificial or has too much echo no matter what soundfont I use.

Rush is one of my favorite bands of all time, the driving force of that being Peart. As a drummer I am always in awe whenever I listen to their music the detail he puts into something that seems quite simple, and making the complex and grand seem with ease and instead of counting out which meter he plays in, you sit back with the feeling that this is one of the rare drummers that puts heart and soul into his work. You're not one second in doubt when you hear Neil Peart.

An underrated part of his artistry I always felt were his lyrics. Some feel that they are too overwrought, pompous or read political ideas into it. So be it; I still think he has written some of the most beautiful words of all time ever put the music. Time Stand Still, Nobody's Hero, Losing It etc... The list is endless. Even one of the more popular Rush songs, Limelight, though catchy and complex at the same time, even has some brilliant existentialist lyrics that burn through any rock and roll clichť and just grabs at you like a moth to a flame.

It's been a while since I've exclaimed no loudly over somebody's death but this was just one of these instances. Sadly I never got to see Rush in concert as people here are completely oblivious to most music in this vein, but working at a music store I have been lucky to encounter a few fellow Rush fans. Rush fans are not to be taken lightly. I've never heard of a "casual" Rush fan. You really put everything into it when you first open your heart to this music.

I suppose some of our fellow Canadians here feel the loss; I remember BrotherTank would talk about Rush now and again back in the old music topics... I can only imagine ack was a fan or at least knew of the group (one of his maps is called Battle Scar, a song they made in collaboration with another good Canadian group, Max Webster)... But thanks for posting. It's been a while since we've talked about music properly here at DHW.

Over the years Iíve had many a conversation about Rush with Ariel. I had the misfortune of breaking the news to him the other day of Peartís passing. Iím still digesting the news.

Age has its price and its blessings. I got to watch Keith Moon and John Bonham, Ginger Baker and Buddy Rich, but I remember the day each one died knowing a legend had been silenced. Peartís passing brought the same emotions. I have always considered Peart the greatest percussionist I have heard and nothing to date has changed that. His quiet dignity throughout the bandís career (and his own personal tragedies) made me appreciate him more as a human being than as an artist and that in itself is a rarity coming from me.

Itís funny how music can impact lives. When I grab an old pen to see if it still has any ink or when I plug in a new keyboard and use it the first time I always write/type the same thing:

All the same we take our chances, laughed at by time, tricked by circumstances.
Plus Áe change, plus cíest la mÍme chose Ė the more that things change, the more they stay the same.

Peace
