Does anyone know how to easily extract sprites from Doom (p)wads?

I have WinTex which I can use to view the sprites but when I double-click on the entry I get the error "Bad Command" as it is trying to launch pbrush.exe (which WinXP doesn't use).

So far I have been using Alt+PrintScrn to capture the whole screen and then pasting it into PaintShop Pro but this is excruciatingly sloooow!

Use eXtendable Wad Editor (XWE).

Thanks for that, Canonir. I downloaded it and had a bit of a play around. The help files don't help much. It says that it supports a heap of games besides doom (including Blake Stone and Wolf 3D) though I haven't tried using it on these yet.

I figured a way of "fixing" WinTex. It came with a configuration file that can be edited easily. I replaced the line "bmp=pbrush.exe %FILE%" with "bmp=mspaint.exe %FILE%"

I couldn't get it to use PSP but at least I don't have to screen capture anymore.

When looking for a way of extracting sprites from Outlaws (I'm doing a wild west tc) I came across a program called Game File Explorer. I don't know if you guys use this but it is awesome! It doesn't work with wolf3d but the list of games it does work with is very impressive. You can get it at: http://gfe.ravencommunity.net/index.html

I remember reading about the problem someone had getting sprites from Blood; this program makes it a doddle.

That might have been me. I had to "print screen" to get every image I used in Blood. I tried XWE, but it saves them in an odd format I couldn't use or edit...the quest for an editor that worked just became too much of a headache, and I just opted to do it the hard way...the deed is done now...(well...not entirely) Smile

You did a great job, especially considering how time consuming (read tedious) it must have been. I'm really enjoying HOS.

GFE is pretty good and allows you to select the palettes for different games (eg you could see how Blood would look with the Doom palette). It doesn't support wolf3d but it is still cool and a lot better (imho) than XWE.

One shortcoming XWE has that might be universal is that it doesn't export Wolf images in a format you can stick right back in...which is very tedious. Yes, it's great to be able to pull out a full set of character images in seconds, but am I saving time when I have to change all their backgrounds back and convert them back to 256 color format? Also, some of the pallettes just aren't right...unless everything in Body Count is supposed to look shadowy and black, but I know better...I've played the game.

One feature I wish extractors had more often was the ability to stick groups of images back into the files it took them from all at once. I think my Doom II wad editor I use has the ability to do that...you have to leave the file names the same, though, or it screws things up. It would save a lot of time, though, to be able to extract 50 guard sprites, recolor them all at once (using Adam Biser's recolor program, found at http://winwolf3d.tripod.com/download/RecolorBMP-1.0.11.exe), then stick them back in in a flash instead of having to do it the old way. Maybe I'm just lazy, but when you try to do as much sprite editing as I do, it gets old really quick doing it the traditional way.

Thanks for the tip, and the kind words about HOS! Cheesy Grin

Monk, Blood comes with a program to edit the art files on the cd. If you hit f12 while viewing a sprite it saves it as a pcx file. I'm suprised you didn't know this, it could've saved you a lot of time.

I tried that F12 trick because the old Duke 3D version of the same program used to work that way, but it didn't seem to be saving them anywhere I could find them...maybe I should check again...not that it matters anymore... Confused

Heh, heh, heh. I extract Doom stuff from WADS (IWADS only though) through EDITART.exe! You heard me right. I use another program that game with the Kill-A-Ton (not sure if it is in others) called Wad2Art. Also by Kenneth. I just use the [F12] button on the image I want in editart and it saves a .pcx.

The version of artedit that came with Blood doesn't save that I can tell...but not to worry...I just used XWE to pull the sprites for some of the enemies for HOS:DR...if only I'd had XWE when I was making HOS, I might have saved myself a lot of headache...but what can you do? Cheesy Grin

Sorry about bumping but I have a question to ask Majik. I don't know how Blood works but does it have a ".grp" file with all the data? Are the Graphics in the .grp file or not? Are the graphic files called "TILESXXX.ART?

I don't remember if they are all stored in a .grp file (I think they were), but the actual are it all stored in tile**.art files. It's been so long since I extracted them that I've had the .art files sitting on my hard disk for ages, but can't remember where they were originally stored. I hope that helps you some way or the other...(I don't recall them being extremely difficult to access, if that's any help). Geek

I was thinking that you could have tried openning them with the DN3d Version of Editart. If it is the same format you could have openned it with another version of Editart. Smile I feel sorry for you that you had to spend so much time with the Screenshots. Sad

Don't feel too bad...it taught me the value of hard work...and of asking others who might know more than me if there's an easier way to do things. When I first started modding, I was determined to do it all myself...I learned right away that that was stupid. Thank goodness I asked for help with the maps when HOS was in the works...that was my first mapping experience, and it could have really sucked if I'd done it all myself with no prior practice... Laughing
