I did some toying around with matching the Wolf3D palette to the EGA palette just to see what the EGA version might have looked like had it been finished. (You can find remnants of this in the code even... ie: egaCeilings[] )
Here's what I got:
Here's the JASC pal file I imported into GAMEPAL.OBJ:
http://winwolf3d.fastmail.us/EGA256.pal
Didn't know which forum to put this in since it's only a palette change. So it's not really coding and it's not really an art thing... well, if you think it should be someplace else BrotherTank, feel free to move it. |

Maybe its just me, but I find this to be really cool! Kind of gives it that old Catacombs feeling. |

Yeah, I'm sure their EGA version would've looked cleaner, especially the face. It probably wouldn't been a pale white face similar to Catacombs.
I had to fudge some of the best matches to get things to look better. ie: The dark greens originally became black, so the mutants were black and the dogs weren't colored very well.
I should've taken screenies of some morecharacters, but I guess if someone wants to see them, they can try it out themselves. |

@Frenkel: I've seen those. They're what made me think to try this out in the first place. I'd forgetten about the face frames though.
There's a bunch of code remnants in the game still.
The egaCeiling stuff, the s_grdgiveup, s_mutgiveup, etc.
If one tried, one could probably make the Catacomb 3D engine from what we have. |

WOW! I've never seen the Wolf3D "roadmap" from EGA to VGA... I see in the EGA/alpha version there was "floor shading"... even if it was quite ugly to see Well, now I'd want to try those old versions... I'd want to find more differencies between alpha version and v1.4! |

I'd like to see if one could make Wolf a stealth sort of game as it was intended. |

I think there are still a lot of Adlib sound effects
from the old version, too.
I was looking through them in WDC,
and half of them I don't think are in the game.
A few of them are
Heartbeat, No Item, Hit Door, and Footstep sounds. |

I've actually been working on a project which is stealth
oriented, but instead of trying to code in stealth
features, all I've done is change my mapping style, and
give the enemy a *lot* of help, so that the only way
you can kill one of them with a knife (which is all you'll have, initially)
is by getting them from behind.....all the guards can be snuck
past....it's been very interesting, and it makes the gameplay
very unusual.
I haven't changed any graphics or anything, as it was
just a one level thing I did for my own amusement to see if it could
be done. |

Adam: Those shots rule!
Though they're not a precise match, it definitely gives you a good EGA feeling. I've got to play with this to see for myself
I'd love to see the old routines and sounds implemented... Those AdLib sounds are a lot of fun, and some are just... Weird.
Just curious: Has anyone here contacted John Romero regarding the EGA version ? Does he still have the old EGA graphics files ? Though I doubt he'd share them with us, I'm curious to know how far they got with the graphics and stuff, what was modified, what was converted over, if any of the guards / actors were drastically different from the finalized versions... I have too many questions about this

Thanks, Ian.
@Frenkel: It sucks that they lost them (though its understandable since they decided to abandon EGA). They would've been an interesting sight. |

It may have been leaked somewhere, but those matters are illegal... Still if someone can do it, it would be cool. Perhaps actually take the old wolf on the apple and convert it to 3d would be an idea? |
