Is it possible to do in Wolf3D? If so, does anyone have a tutorial on how to implement it? I'm trying to figure it out to add it to my Return to Castle Wolfenstein mod, based on old DOS Wolf3D source... |

Wolf3D's music engine is, if I'm not mistaken, written mostly in ASM. So...
Short Answer: Forget it, not going to happen.
Long Answer: MAYBE possible, but highly unlikely that it's ever going to happen. |

Completely Impossible to do this mp3 for wolfenstein 3d
you can ask Adam Biser about MP3....if he can tell you how to do with mp3, but I am not
sure he will able to do..... |

Wolfenstein is still a long way from even being able to accept Mp3, wolf only accepts wav files, and only in a limited format. |

Yeah. In fact, it'd probably be easier for me to use DirectSound in combination with NewWolf... |

My solution in 3 easy steps
1) Start WinAmp
2) Click Play
3) Run Wolf3D
Hope this helps
Otherwise, nope no mp3s in wolf3d. Maybe in NewWolf. |

.wavs are only for Digi sounds, and thos must be in lower quality. Music is limited to IMFs, so all you could hope for it take make it accept midis. Yep... that would be a big step there. You'd probably need to get to MUS files first.
Edit: What do you mean by your first port? Is the mod for Wolf3d or RTCW? |

No, based on Wolf3D source, the name is Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
EDIT: OK, How do I use MIDI's instead of IMF's? |

Like I said, music engine is ASM. Nobody's ever released a TC with MIDI music. Put two and two together, man! Nobody has a solution to give off the top of their head! Just give up your dreams of super complexity. Someone might do it someday, but until then, courage. |

Didn't say it was impossible, just said nobody had the answer off the top of their head. |

Yeah, I know you didn't say it was impossible. I was just saying that it has been done and can be done, so hopefully someone will eventually figure out how it was done.
Maybe Noah 3D does something like Doom and have a MIDI to adlib sound converter chunk or something, but I don't remember seeing one in there anywhere. So maybe it was the real deal. |

Hmm.. Maybe you could code something into wolf that would tell winamp to play a certain mp3 when a certain level is reached, or have a program in windows that recognizes when wolf reaches a certain level and will play a certain mp3. |

I've always thought about that too. I think the best way would be to create an external file in wolf3d, something like an ini file, which gets written to as the level is passed (like the saved game or config files do). The mp3 program would have to constantly check the file as it's playing, or switch to another track when it knows the file has changed. I'd assume that this would require making a different version of winamp, like a basic windows based mp3 launcher.
The only thing that might be a problem is the timing, as when I play a set of mp3s in the background when playing wolf3d, it takes a few seconds to jump from one to another as one is finished; but that's probably just due to how it was programmed, I think as long as the check is part of the regular playing routine, it should work fine. Just some thoughts. |

@IanFranken: Thanks, I try
@Chris: I was just getting ready to say the same thing.
Does Winamp have a command line commands? If so, wolf3d could create a BAT file and run it. |

If you guys figure this out that'd be great! I'd definitely like to utilize this for modding, of course then I'd have to supply large mp3s with the zip, but I guess I could come up with an optional audiot that has imfs if no one wanted to download.
I'm lost as to how a batch file would work since it would seem like it would have to update itself or something so it can recieve commands from wolf while its running. |

Or you could write a totally new MP3 player (no need for any fancy options, just 'play') and distribute it with your game, so that you don't have to rely on using Winamp. I know someone who did exactly what's being discussed here with QBasic and a Visual Basic midi player he wrote. Something like that would be very cool... and very possible... |

If you are looking to convert a wav to mp3 or mp3 to wav, google search it, there are TONS of converters out there. |
