I personally think that in Blake Stone: Planet Strike, the partially invisible enemies are far more convincingly stealthy than the Spectres from Doom... In fact, the partial invisibility in Planet Strike actually kind of reminds me of the light-bending "thermoptic camouflage" from Ghost in the Shell.

Many of the levels in Planet Strike are really dark (that is, under really low light; certainly much darker than the Aliens of Gold levels)... and combining that with a bunch of cloaked guards can be quite frightening. In fact, there's this one level in Planet Strike that has a dark warehouse full of cloaked guards, and it can be quite scary, because it's so dark, you'd actually have quite a hard time (unless you're really good) figuring out who's shooting you and from where... Partially invisible guards, especially when they look more like blurs and less like black fuzz patches, are surely much more threatening than those Doom Spectres.

Yeah, I liked them too, just hearing them, spinning around and not seeing them, was kind of freaky. This would be wiked in Wolf3d!

I tell you, playing Planet Strike (works to a certain extent for Aliens of Gold) in the dead of night wearing headphones with full sound and music terrifies me.
