Hey, new to the forum. So cool that there is a forum for this around. Anyway, here is a quick SS Officer I did.

What is everyone working in? I am using Pocket Artist on a Pocket PC as well as Photoshop CS. Is there a program specifically for making game sprites though thats better?

Looks really good. My only complaint is that it looks like you are trying to go for an eagle on the hat, except it's pretty dim and not well defined. That is unless it's not a bird at all, then you should ignore that.

I use paint, and The GIMP, and Photo Impact.

Never used a Pocket PC. To be honest, I use a now-obsolete version of Neopaint for DOS. It's version 3.0, IIRC. It's a pain to use sometimes, but it does everything I need it to do, minus the DLL-related hassles. Beware newer versions of Neopaint, which are about as stable and reliable as Windows ME. What?

I downloaded Paintshop Pro 8 Trial Version. But if you 'crack' it you can get the trial thing taken off, therefore you get free software. I think this may be illegal but hell Twisted Evil
Search the net and you can find exes that crack paint shop pro or even other paint program trial software you may have.

just pillage it off of lime wire. Nice pic by the way but it looks as if you have missed a bit o detail on his hat IE the rather flat looking middle bit (the grey bit)

I use Paint for Windows 95. Always have, and probably always will. For the purpose of sprite editing and creation, I can't imagine using anything else. Now, for the recoloring and resizing aspects, I use "recolor.bmp" and "spritemaker", both by Adam Biser.

Looks like you were going for a black chef hat...

He is good, desent for a first timer. That is, guessing that you are a first timer. I like the bits of blue I can see slightly blended into the grey. I dont think it was on purpose, but it looks good.

Reading a thread like this, I'll probably post an image of my altered Brown Guard when I'm through working on him. The different-colored clothes and the changed face are done. I just need to enhance the hat.

My sentiments exactly. Thats wat I thought as soon as I saw it. I think besides the hat, it looks like the ss from around 100 other add-ons. Common colours and all that, good if its a beginner go, since my first graphic editting consisted of making guard noses as long as they're arms, making them have massive grins, and drawing brown patches on they're arses Razz

My SS would be altered so that - along with the said color changes - I would also ... ah, I'll just let you see it when it's done. Smile

Thanks, it was a first attempt. I am working on a new character now.

As far as it looking like the one from the 100 other mods, there are only so many nazi uniforms and they all have pretty much been done, so...

Personally i don't see how you can draw with PSP or photoshop i got them both, but i can never draw, i only use them for colouring and shading etc. The standard paint program which comes with windows is the best in my opinion and like Magik Monkee i use Adams programs along with it. Something i would like to learn though is how to do digitalized images, i really wanna do that for some characters in my game... Also i cant see your SS guard your gunna have to sort out the broken link.

I avoid Paint for the simple reason that it doesn't allow you to select the colors you want. The best you can do is pick up a color that's already used in the picture, and then draw with it. That doesn't allow you to make images from scratch, which I often do. The "hacked" images I've done are few and far between. I've done three in all (though one needs a better palette and re-coloring), the first two found in MM's Image World.

Paint has alot of nifty tricks that most people don't know about. For example, Tricob, you can make custom colors by double clicking a color, then mixing a new color. Here's a few other tricks I've found:
-Paint can actually zoom up to 10x. "But mine only says 8x!" Yeah, but there's a trick to it: click a small line just before the little zoom box ends (under 8x) and if you did it right then you should zoom in to 10x.
-Most newer versions of Paint have a little-known grid feature. Zoom in and hit ctrl+g.
-Don't forget the thumbnail! When zoomed in, go to the zoom menu and find the "show thumbnail" option.
-Most people know about the stretch option, but the poor skew option often gets neglected because most people don't know what it means. Basically, it takes your image, starting out as a flat image, and rotates it almost in a 3D manner according to the degrees you put in. More handy than you'd think, especially for cool GIF effects.
Poor Paint, it's so neglected Crying or Very sad I only use PSP for special effects, and even then it's when I don't make my special effects sprite-based.

That would be altering the palette though, wouldn't it? For 16-bit color images, yes - It would be handy. But when making 256-color images for Wolfenstein, it'd be downright troublesome.

But thanks, the feature will come in handy when I'll want to do 16-bit images. Growing up in the 8-bit days though, 256-color image editing is all I can handle for right now. Embarassed

Umm, no, it doesn't alter the palette at all... It just picks the closest color from the palette.

Hey even I still use paint. I usually use PSP for the more tedious stuff, but I've had situations where I had the need to sprite or something and I was at school and all I had was paint. But paint can do everything, it's just that all the stuff it does depends on your work and not the work of the computer. PSP, though, is good for keeping things in order, especially for animation, because it uses layers.

I absolutely love those DHWTC guards...they're top notch work...I love any excuse to have someone post them. Paint may be somewhat primative compared to newer drawing programs, but when you're dealing with 256 colors and 64x64 pixels, there's nothing newer programs can do with them that paint can't. If you're looking to import some colors into a paint image that aren't available in the standard color selection at the bottom of the screen, try placing some pixels of a color you know you won't use, then using Adam's "Recolor.bmp" program to change them to something you need, and repeat the process as much as necessary. Sure, it's not as easy as having a huge palette available to start with, but it's always worked for me...
