Here's another in this series. Ariel's 'Golden Episodes' has been quite high in the forum addon charts for many months now. How do you rate it?

I voted Fantastic, it is probably one of the best add-ons I've played that has the original feel in it. Very Happy The levels are extensive, the music is the best, and it gave me a good challenge, and it is very addicting. Very Happy

Well, I liked this game a lot, it had some very cool things... The music, those text bits at the start of the episodes advancing the plot, a good challenge, big levels, nice new graphics... But, somehow, I couldn't quite get into it as much as with something like Chemical Warfare, or Projeckt Vertilgung. Probably just me! But anyway, I voted "Above Average".

I voted "Fantastic" too, because The Golden Episodes is very stylish, and the maps are maybe the best ones I've ever played - all of them are very big, interesting and have an actual design behind them - it's not just a pack of rooms. I also enjoyed the introduction/endtext stories which bring cool atmosphere into the game. What I disliked was the replaced colour of the guards, but who cares heh. Wink Anyways, I'm sure TGE will be remembered as one of those add-ons where the maps are great, and much effort was put into it. Congratulations, Ariel.

FANTASTIC!

And a question, The main menu's song, what is it? It sounds quite familiar.

The game really have its own feel and quality. I have played the first episode, and it's not bad. I have voted above average, because it have taked me many hours to complete the first episode. The game's difficulty skill is high!

You're right there. It's the hardest Wolf 3d mod ever. I find the mutant episode practically impossible....

Yeah. I've got many trouble in Golden Episodes, I was needed to use the knife a lot. The guards are faster and the gun damage are higher.

Oh, come on you guys! What's the whole community gonna think about you? I can even imagine what the people will starting saying to each other after reading what you've written here... "Hey, don't you believe those Nemesis and Hair Machine are a pair of wimps?" "Yeah, dude, they make me laugh... I bet they couldn't beat a guardless map even in God Mode!"...

LOL... Just kidding, of course, but if you really consider 'The Golden Episodes' is the hardest Spear/Wolf mod ever, then don't even think about trying anything by Poet... Wink

Yes, it's a hard set to beat, but not that hard. Sometimes I had to use the knife, that was done deliberately I think, but I found there was always enough ammo to build it up again somewhere else in the level. Smile

Poet game's hard. I've played The Tower and other game who I don't remember the name that's was very difficult! I've started with only a knife to fight against many guards and mutants behind drums! Smile

You're right actually Ariel, the Tower is also ridiculously hard. Anyway, I'm not the greatest player of Wolf3d (read that as BAD compared to most here), and TGE really isn't a chill-out game. It's a white-knuckle rollercoaster... Twisted Evil One of the reasons I find these ammo-devouring games hard is because I genuinely SUCK at finding any secrets. And it's almost annoying, because this mod is such a great play, and yet I die so much I get driven insane and have to stop before frustration levels rise too high... Clearly I am a total wimp. HELP AARGH THE BLUE NAZIS NOOOOOO

Well, I think people shouldn't be forced to find secrets because secrets are usually a bonus, right? And being left with only the knife is OK sometimes, but if you force the player to use it all the time, that can get pretty frustrating. The game becomes a "first person stabber" instead of a "first person shooter." So if you're going to place such high expectations on the player, you should warn them in advance because most people who download add-ons are just looking for a fun shooter to play.

There've been potentially wonderful add-ons which were ruined by the lack of supplies. The Tower was one example. I was really intrigued at first, but then I stopped playing because things were too unfair. There wasn't enough health or ammo, and it was too easy to get stuck.

About TGE... I can honestly say that didn't cheat until Episode 5 (the player shouldn't be forced to kill mutants with a knife, 'cause it's damn near impossible!) But TGE was still a fun add-on, at least for me. The story was interesting and pretty well-written. The levels had pretty good layouts and were challenging. Though I was forced to use the knife a lot more often than usual, I didn't have to use it all the time. Still, I think it should've been a little more fair. But overall, a pretty decent game as far as most add-ons come, and it's obvious that Ariel put a great deal of effort into this. So I voted "Above Average."

All I can say is stealth, is the most important. If you alert any enemies you better run like a coward hide behind a corner and hope it's only one that greets you. They're cool, but hard. I just make sure I use my knife whenever possible, better to use it now then only have it later when you need a machine gun.

I could've sworn one was there, just the F# keys were rearranged, but I'll of course check again, since the more I think about it, the more I remember regular saving so damn many times. That's the only thing I didn't like about the Golden Episodes, the rearranged F# keys, but there may have been a purpose... Doesn't stop it from being a kickass mod!

Indeed. I do understand the lack of quicksave and quickload keys may be annoying. I know about several people who feel that way, and I can't disagree with them. If you ask me now, I wouldn't take these keys off any mod, because I myself use them quite a lot. At the moment I worked on 'The Golden Episodes', I decided I didn't want them because I kind of considered they made things easier for the player, perhaps too much; and I sort of wanted mine to be a challenging, tough mod. I contacted MCS, and he kindly provided me with a way to get rid of them. I do understand, too, that 'The Golden Episodes' was already a hard mod, so the quicksave and quickload keys sure should have remained there. Oh well...

Ariel.

It may have been for the best... I keep getting errors in TCs because I quicksave so damned much. Well, not so much because I quicksave so frequently as the fact that I always make positive that the game saved. And I do so by holding down the quicksave key for about 3 seconds. Thus, I get plenty of mismatched wall and game bombing errors.
But anyway, back on topic, I'll say that the Golden Episodes is the mod that made me learn to use the knife effectively... Frequently needed ammo, especially in the beginning parts!

The Golden Episodes is one of the addons that I've annotated, so it holds a particular fondness for me. I rarely used the knife in other previous addons, but I quickly found it to be my first preference
in games I've played since.

I consider Episode 5 to be below average, even though I haven't seen much of it. It's impossible at Death Incarnate, and when I only have 30% health at the end of floor one when playing baby level, it's time to admit defeat. There are just too many enemies to take out with just a pistol, and little in
the way of ammo replacement until places where you have probably already been killed. It's like trying to play Project: Eisenritter with just a machine gun. A machine gun to start off with would give
you a fighting chance.
