I can't find a useable mp3 to midi converter, but I could work with a mp3 to imf converter. Does such a tool exist, or is there one in production?

Mp3 to midi converters just don't work for me.

Can anyone help?

I'm pretty sure no such thing is possible. You can't emulate speech in an IMF file.

Not a practical idea, I'm afraid; IMF playback is rather limited. I'd try for background WAV playback instead. Say - load up more WAV data from the audio file every two seconds; more often if needed.

Such a routine was mentioned before, but I have no memory of what topic it was located on. I can't remember names of things for the life of me ... Not Happy

Mp3 to midi converters are definately out there. Here's a link to a few of them:

http://www.mp3towav.org/mp3-to-midi.asp

It's science is still growing, but here's how one of them works, according to it's help file:

Quote:
7Canaries performs music recognition in several steps. First it produces some kind of spectra-like data; this is further called the "Wave->Pitch" conversion. At the present moment, there exist three different algorithms implementing this step; each of them has its own cons and pros. Then it multiplies that spectral data by coefficients of "Equalizer", making some pitches louder and some quieter. The third step is the actual notes retrieval from the spectra, it is called the "Pitch->MIDI" process and there are also two algorithms doing that. The final step is producing the MIDI file structure, and you can choose some attributes of the output MIDI file.

Check out these songs I tried converting with that "7Canaries Standard" program (just using the default settings).

A simple piano-based recording:

The original mp3: http://www.canadianphilatelics.com/choksta/zero.mp3

Some weird experiment full of different instruments:

MIDI conversion: http://www.canadianphilatelics.com/choksta/midi2.mp3
The original mp3: http://www.canadianphilatelics.com/choksta/orc_nostalgia.mp3

Interesting, isn't it? The midis are in mp3 because it's the trial/unregistered version, which doesn't let you save the results.
If you can get each instrument/channel as separate mp3s, then mix the midis together, I'm sure it would give even better results though.

Alot of people would say that mp3 to midi converters are crap, but I find it rather fascinating to see all the notes that they actually DO catch. Smile

Okay I'll try out a few of those midi converters instead (since well now I know that converting mp3 to imfs is impossible, I guess I take the other way. The more work and less play way.
Now I'm going to finish early and be at home, bored complaining about nothing to do.
