You might have thought from reading the title of this that it was about Nazis, but not really...not the Nazis you're thinking about. Actually, I'm referring to the IT Nazies and the web server at my job that has blocked almost every site I enjoy visiting over break and lunch, and has effectively made my job the biggest bore possible. First it was modDB, then it was the Wolf3D Dome, then a bunch of the smaller sites I visited for a while, and the most recent outrage was the blockage of Myspace. As of now, this is the last place I can still visit during my precious small amounts of free time, and who knows how long that will last? My question is this - what is the harm of having sites available to visit during non-work hours? I wouldn't care if they were blocked during regular production time, but ALL the time make the internet here pretty useless...anyway, sorry to just about everyone who came across this rant. That's pretty much just what it is...a Evil or Very Mad rant, because frankly, I think the whole thing sucks.

I can relate, my school did similar stuff with "Smartfilter". You can just use a proxy (even archive.org) to visit the non-interactive sites, unless they've blocked that, too, in which case... Sad

Hey,
The sysops at my school think they are smart by setting up a proxy themselves.
Hmm, by just browsing not using that proxy, you can visit everything again.
Although, if it's real professionally done, I think you can't solve it.
Maybe just talk to your boss.

Glad to know I'm not alone. I'm not sure I want to play around with things too much - don't want to aggravate the sysops. Mostly just venting. The odd thing is that my older brother sent me an email "cache" of my Myspace page, and I was able to look at it and even check some links on it. Not all of them, of course. Very odd. At least I can still go here as of now.

I do recall my old high school having randomly block and unblock websites without any of our knowing. One of them being google.com (What the hell?). Of course, techies like me knew how to *override* this security feature by using google.ca, google.fr, google.it, etc.

Another work-around: If your school computer allows access to 37.COM, you can enter that site and tell it to use the Google.COM engine. Mr Green Geek Razz
