Alright, the question is easy to ask, though maybe not that easy to answer. Think I know what the majority will reply, but I’d like to hear so, anyway. Apart from just the plain answer, maybe you guys want to expand on the reason for your choice. Any justification will be most welcome…

My vote goes to DOOM simply because it kicks serious ass and always will.

Ariel.

EDIT: I added a third option for those who think both games rock equally...

Hmm... Eventhough Doom is overall better than Wolf or Sod, still I vote for Wolfenstein...
Why? Well... Eventhough Doom is a nice game - it lacks something important:
That annoying feeling of suspection and addictive action that makes you want
to play the game all over again.

When I finished the Doom2 for the first time, I was bit disappointed.
All the nice ideas they had in that game dried up because of the lousy ending.

Also maybe it is just that "brainless slaughter" that Doom - series is full of,
but somehow I never found that game logical... Must admit that the bloodshed
in those games can be fun but it is just a bad excuse for the "hollow" story.

Thats why I vote for Wolfenstein.

Wolf3D is great, I never got into SOD much. My vote went to Doom because I loved deathmatch. Doom II has some great maps for that, in my opinion.

Well, it is hard to decide but i chose DOOM, it has z-axis and sectors which are really awesome, plus a Wolf3d\SOD mod for DOOM looks awesome (depending which one u play) they were all good games, and they should be both equal, because of the big contribution into the gaming industry.

DOOM would seem to be the obvious choice, but I enjoy Wolfenstein much more, so that's what I voted for! Cheesy Grin

I voted for Wolf3d because I played it way before finding DooM and wolf just has a part of my heart.

However, I have been playing alot more DooM2 wads lately because I finally downloaded two more ports and with that, found the man's best friend helpers. Those little doggies are just too cute to let some enemy kill so I spend alot of time protecting them vs them protecting me.

My vote goes to Wolf3D/Spear for numerous reasons.

All three games have secret levels, but when I think about it, what's the point in the Doom games having secret levels? You don't get extra points for playing them because the Doom games have no score. It doesn't increase your overall ratios at the game's end because those aren't tallied either. If you go to the trouble to locate all the secrets in the levels, kill everyone in the levels, and get every single item in the leves, you are rewarded with ... nothing. It really defeats the purpose of going through the game a second time in the first place, and part of a game's overall value to the customer is replay value. These things appear to be seriously overlooked in the Doom games, not enhanced upon like I think they should have been.

And the Doom games seem more slowly placed than the Wol3D/SOD games. Not to mention dreary and bleak, which I've never been partial to, and always made me anxious for the dull, drab trends of today to come to end.

If you're good enough there is "a reward" in it for you. You record a demo about it and might get your name on the Doom hall of fame on the internet. http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Speedrun

Besides I think the levels are good enough to have replay value, you can always choose a higher difficulty.

That was awesome. I can totally see what you're getting at. Somehow, from playing your addon OKBJ, I could sense that you felt this way all along, and I do too. Don't get me wrong, I love Doom, and have had some really great memories from it's atmosphere and level designs, but I can't really get into most wolf3d addons out there for this kind of reason. I know that underneath, I will eventually love and appreciate them, but it's hard, I just naturally like things that are supposed to be exciting and entertaining... or maybe as ack said, have an "arcade style mentality". What kind of wolf3d addons have that? I'm sure I could pick every TC apart and mention what I don't like about them, because no, they don't have this, atleast to a degree that would measure up to what they do to cover it up with things that are aimed to creating a "dreary and bleak" atmosphere, or whatever.

I think it was about 1999, when I saw people ripping textures from Doom, that I kinda lost hope in people making creative addons altogether. It was kind of a... what are people trying to do? feeling. This isn't fun, this isn't creative. Do you people have no imagination? I pretty much dislike the shading tutorial as a whole, same with custom made dark gray textures, because it's quite rare that they'll do anything exciting for me. Remember Duke Nukem I, how it had those animated purple flags, cool beepedy sound effects, and that large colourful bar you had to shoot, that's the kind of stuff I see as exciting! Or the ideas in Jill of the Jungle! Man, who does that kind of stuff in wolf3d addons? The goals are so... bland, it seems. Maybe it's because people are influenced to present addons in a certain way, where they will get more respect by focusing on what would be perceived as a "professional" way of doing things. Bleh.

The main problem with making a game that is not "dreary and bleak" is that it takes a lot more to keep it interesting, I find. In a "dreary and bleak" game, you could use the same bad guys for a ton of different areas, it doesn't really matter as much because everything is supposed to be dreary and bleak anyway (e.g. the changes are less apparent or have less effect, you can focus on less things and get away with it). I don't know, I think variation and non-bland addons go hand and hand. If you're willing to accept dullness and darkness, then you can probably accept lack of variation too. In an environment where everything has be exciting, you need to continuously keep giving people the unexpected, whereas a "dreary and bleak" setting requires less to gain more. You wouldn't want to hear the same door sound on a different level, in an interesting game, for instance, because it was so interesting already that you don't want it to lose it's appeal. People do vary things up, but do they ever do it in a world that is supposed to jump out at people in the fun sense? For 10 levels straight? Where are these addons?

Sorry, I'm really tired... so maybe this isn't making much sense. This is somewhat how I can relate to Tricob's post, though.

I voted wolf3d, because I love E3L10 & been freaking Pac-man out when you got into secret level where they can't be killed by BJ.

I agree, about the dreary bleak thing. I really like doom for its hordes of enemies and robotron style battles, but some levels can just get downright boring at times and the dreary music in Doom 2 doesn't help much. Ugh... Then everything starts to blend together with that annoying Brown clouds sky it tends to make the levels all feel the same for some reason.

That's why I enjoy making humorous wolf mods, they are easy to get into, fun to play, and fun to make. Really I don't have too much time for games anymore so a coffee break game is just what the doctor ordered for me. And Wolf is just that. You can just scroll down and select your favorite episode and then go at it, and by the time it gets boring you've already finished the episode so you still feel like you accomplished something. And you almost NEVER have to re orient yourself as to what you were doing if you save a game and then don't return to it for like a week. You can just get back up and go into the fray with little hassle. I vote for Wolf.

I've always liked Wolf / SoD more than Doom. Both SoD and Doom (SW) were one of the first games I ever played but for some reason I prefer Wolf / SoD. I've tried thinking what's the reason but I just can't get that.

I voted Wolf3D/SOD too. DOOM obviously has the better engine but it always seems there's something missing when I play it. The atmosphere is not there like it is in Wolf3D/SOD.

Wolf can't ever compete with doom. Doom has it all: interesting and fun levels, kick-ass music and cool enemies. Wolfensteins levels were too boring in my opinion (that's why I haven't ever played through original wolfenstein).

Believe it or not boys and girls, I prefer Wolf3d/SoD over DOOM big time. Below are some reasons why.

*The original Wolfenstein 3D has more levels then Doom (60 - 27 I believe) so more time can be spent trying to beat a single episode.
*I'm used to editing Wolf3d/SoD and have a hard time understanding Doom editors.
*I believe Doom has too many weapons for a game that's pre-Quake, by simple I mean you can't even look up/down, jump, or croutch.

Anyway, that's just my opinions and you guys are entitled to yours. Doom does have totally sick music, though.

Personally I would say Doom I had better maps than Doom II. It's missing couple of good enemies though.
