For those of you who recently got Windows 2000 or XP (or even NT), you might be a bit surprised to find that the adlib sounds and music no longer work with Wolfenstein 3-D and a lot of older DOS games. There are currently two known solutions for this problem:

1) VDMSound - http://sourceforge.net/projects/vdmsound/ (has version 2.0.4)
Version 2.1 Public Beta - http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=2071 then click "GET IT HERE"
Forum: http://vogons.zetafleet.com/index.php?c=6
This adds a nice interface that lets you right-click an EXE file and select "Run with VDMS".
OR you can open the command prompt (or make a BAT file) and type:
::: CODE :::
DOSDRV
<The name of the EXE>
The second method has been known to truncate the digital sounds. So it's best to use the right-click method.
Version 2.1 allows you to set up VDMSound profile files (*.vlp) so that you can more easily run your program with the settings you used before. All you have to do is double-click the VLP file. Personally, I prefer version 2.1.

2) DOSBox - http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/
FAQ: http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/faq.php
Forum: http://vogons.zetafleet.com/index.php?c=7
This is more robust than VDMSound and acts like a complete MSDOS emulator.
Be sure to read the documentation and it will make things a lot simpler. Pay attention to the MOUNT command.
You can edit the DOSBox.conf file in the install directory so that it will automatically MOUNT your drives for you.
To do this, simply open the DOSBox.conf file and go to the bottom where the "autoexec" section is:
::: CODE :::
echo Mounting drives...
mount C C:\
mount D D:\ -t cdrom

The last line, as you probably guessed, mounts drive D as a CD-ROM drive.

I use VDMSound for normal play, and DOSBox for when I need to take screenshots, which is not very often.

Both forums allow anonymous posting, at least in their General sections.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: Fixed VDMSound links.

@JackaL: You might try re-downloading the install file for VDMSound.

It's best to just right click and run with VDMSound. Otherwise, some sounds may be shortened.

@Dugtrio17: I think I've had shortened sounds when I used the right-click method, too. I'll have to check.

The shortenning occurs both ways. Just a minor flaw. For me only when I start the game, the music is slow and rushes through.

@ZuljinRaynor: I have that problem too, but again, just a minor flaw.

Hmm... I only get the shortening with the DOSDRV method... But I do occasionally get that music rushing, mostly when I rush through the opening screen.

Question: I use VDMSound (with the "right click method") and even though it supposedly emulates SBPro 1 and 2, the game behaves as if it only detects a bread-and-butter SoundBlaster:

- No stereo
- Only 1 audio channel
- "Far away" sounds (that should have a lower volume) are still played at maximum volume

Happens to anyone else?

The links have been corrected in the first post. It seems that their page is down and who knows if and when it will be back. They mainly use their forum to post the latest information. (The sourceforge link is behind.)

@MountainGoat: Sorry, didn't see your question until now. Yes, that happens to me, even with version 2.1, but this version offers more settings, so you might be able to get it to work correctly. This might also depend on what Windows is telling its DOS emulator about the sound card. It might be defaulting to a low-end SB card or something, although DOSBox does the stereo/distance fading stuff. I'll have to experiment a bit more with this.

This might be what ZuljinRaynor and some of you were talking about with "rushing music" but whenever anything is loading or when I'm against a wall/door the music slows way down. Why is this and is there any way to fix it?

You'll also experience this when you hold down the Spacebar. That's because the same Adlib sound is refreshing itself over and over again. That's what's slowing down the music.

Shutting down the Adlib sounds (or switching to PC speaker - Yuck!) always fixes the problem.

I should note however, that TCs which have the Wall and Spacebar sounds removed (Like "Spear: Resurrection") have no musical slowdowns like this.

Hai,
The VDMSound works very fine for me.
First I used Dosbox, but it played the game really weird. It started at a cpu
count of 5000, and the game was really slow. At a cpu of 15000, it was a bit smoother,
but the sound was so fast that I could not hear it proper anymore.
So I tried VDMSound, and it goes very well.

I'm currently making a wolf3d mod, and if the players of it cannot
hear the sound, I can recommend them vdmsound. That's real cool.

So thanks for the link,

I love VDMSound for mods that DOSBox seems to have trouble playing at speed, except for this little fault: for whatever reason, VDMSound hands me out keyboard latency up the wazoo. Does/has anyone else experience(d) this, and if so, does anyone have a fix for it?

I noticed this when I first started using the 2.1 beta. Try opening properties and disabling unused items, for me that was MIDI (Wolf doesn't use this) and the joystick (I don't have one).
