Interesting site.
AOG is $5.99 to download from the 3D Realms site also. $10 if you get it on 3.5" disk. Though, PS is $10 either way from 3D Realms.

Kind of funny that gog.com lists AOG as being 18 MB and compatible with Vista and XP. I didn't think AOG took that much space and compatible must not take sound support into account, just the fact that it'll run normally and without crashing.

They did have a couple adventure games listed as free, too, if you sign up for the site.

They do tend to over-estimate their size and system requirements, and I think they ship it with DOSBox.

Yeah, it's cheaper at gog, and better, since you can download the game from anywhere with your gog account, and you get extra content when you buy any game from them. Smile All their games run with sound, the DOS games use Dosbox for that. And Planet Strike will be available next week. Very Happy

Ah, you're forgetting that BS:AOG requires several megabytes of free hard disk space just to run. I found this out the hard way on my 80286 machine, which had a 31 MB hard drive. BS:AOG requires the extra space because it dumps data to a swap file. I found the swap file left over in the directory when I had to reboot Blake Stone with the Reset button (v3.0 doesn't like 80286s).

@Tricob: that makes no sense. How are they going to package all that "free space"? It might need more space to run, but for distribution, that doesn't make sense.

Well, when a game requires 10 MBs of harddisk space to install, and then it needs 8 MBs free space afterwards to run the program, it's easier for a company to simply put down "requires 18 MB of harddisk space" rather than explain that you use 10 MB of space to install, and then on top of that, the program won't run until you have 8 MB of free space afterwards. Except that it has that it says that that's the download size, not required disk space for an install. What you say would be listed in the system requirements. Not that it matters really.

It's probably due to having DOSBox like AlumiuN mentioned, plus any extra stuff, maybe a scan of the manual or something. It seems that the two of them are going hand-in-hand with things, ie: DOSBox's last two news articles feature GOG.com.

I'm still tempted to sign up just to grab the free games. lol If I haven't mentioned it before, thanks for pointing this site out.

EDIT: As mentioned, that's a nice site with some hard-to-find older games, such as Blake Stone and Duke3D. I'm a bit of a bargain game hunter. In a way, sites like this kind of take the thrill out of the hunt. I've found several deals, but I hunt them in 'meatspace'. Getting American McGee's Alice, M.A.X., Max Payne, and some others for $ 0.25 each new was a highlight. And finding a unopened copy of Space Quest II for around $1.25 and that was in 2003, I think. Maybe I just have poor taste in hobbies. Laughing

Some elusive games I've been hunting for years are: Blood, Heretic, and Hexen. I found the first two back around 1998-9, but due to unfortunate circumstances, my dad threw them out. argh. At least I still have the SOD Super Pack I got with the bunch. Anyway, I'm rambling...

Yeah, usually GOG ships all of their games with added bonuses, which add to the final size of the download. Im tempted to get blake stone to see if they have the original manual with that art book included in the original retail game. I suppose PDF files can get pretty big too. Smile

Not to be cliche, but there is always Ebay. Theres two boxed copies of Heretic: SOTR on my local Ebay right now for instance.

I got a near new Blood One Unit box set off there a few years back for instance.

Funny, I always tried Overstock.com for such things, and Egghead.com failing that. Smile

Nope, no warez! Though you might try out the sites that Tricob and vermil mentioned.

Back on topic, i think ill start mapping for blake stone since it's enjoying a somewhat revived popularity now. Adam, does WDC fully support blake stone by now?

Warez? Theoretically, yes. But you can't buy it in a way that benefits the original creators, and so we deem it abandoned. Theoretically, you can also search for it on Google, but that's a different story...

I own a hard copy of Blood, so don't worry. I don't know where it is, but I own it. Smile

So-called "abandonware" is still "warez". Let them use Google. I know that Greg and Steve don't want to get slapped with any sort of trouble because someone links or points to such a site. That's all there is to it. No big deal.

I understand the reason such sites exist and feel the same pain, but we need to play by the site rules. I wish people could publish their titles forever. At least with the internet we can sometimes buy a download from the game company when games are no longer on the shelves.

I know it's still warez, and it does really suck that a lot of companies choose to neglect their older titles, despite their quality (Blood, for example). I understand about the warez links things as well. Ironically, the site you censored also doesn't like having warez links being posted in, because they're balancing enough on the line as it is. Although it seems that yet another blow has been dealt in the old games stakes, because Epic Classics, who sell old Epic MegaGames titles, seem to have died.

From what I've read the past few days, the company is in fact still active, but they don't check their E-Mails as often as they used to. I do have the link about this info, but DHWs policy prevents me from posting a public link for such a website. I suppose PM-ing me about it is okay, though. Smile
