Back in the day, when i had my windows 95 computer playing wolf3d and what not, I absolutely loved the music/adlib sounds , but when i upgraded to XP I was crushed. The adlib and music for wolf3d under dos box isnt like i remembered it is different. I know nothing of the technical stuff of sound cards. The knew .dll files they use to play music in XP are all the same sounding (used in dosbox, NEWWOLF openGL, and imfcreator). My question is, is there anything else out there to emulate the music better? By better i mean, exactly like it sounded on Windows 95. Anything being a similar program to dosbox or winamp plugin or anything. Just as long as i dont have to compile it to run it. <-- this is why i will never visit sourceforge ever again. lol.

Hi, and welcome. I know what you mean. However, I don't think software synths will ever duplicate the sound of the old FM sound cards 100%. And you're right about DOSBox, IMFCreator, etc, all based on the same code. However, I remember having a version of AdPlug that sounded different.

You can download it here: http://www.informatik.uni-oldenburg.de/~dyna/adplug/

You probably want a version before 1.6 because I think that's when they switched to MAME (what the others use). There's a really old version (0.8) here: http://www.winamp.com/plugins/details/10240
You'll probably need an old version of WinAmp, too, for it. My WinAmp bombs when loading after installing the v0.8

EDIT: Older versions can be downloaded here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=28079&package_id=22405
They are there in compiled form, don't worry. Try 1.5 for starters. I haven't tested these. If they fail and WinAmp bombs when loading, delete in_adlib.dll from the WinAmp\Plugins folder and you should be back to normal.

i wonder if there is anyone out there that has a recording of their old comp playing wolf3d music? i would absolutely love to hear it. if i did hear it and were able to isolate the instruments and take samples of them, i could make trackers file for all the songs using the instruments! not exactly the same but closer than software synths.

Heh, I actually made a tape recording of the songs from Doom through an old FM synth... no Wolf songs, though. Don't know where that tape is at the moment, though.

bunkerbuster0118,

Have you tried Ripper's Wolf4SDL? It emulates the sounds and music perfectly on several different platforms. www.chaos-software.de.vu/

Version 1.4 is quite stable, and all you need will be: the W32 binaries (EXE), the 2 DLLs listed, and then add the .WL6 files from the registered version.

Hope this helps,
Andy

In fact Wolf4SDL also uses the MAME OPL emulator with some minor modifications, but I think the result is much better than with DOSBox.
Just give it a try! ;D

i tried it! but its still not the same as my old comp. something else though, i noticed was that digisound effects would never clash or the wave out operator was never interupted. all sounds could come out at once, even though not the same music wise as i was hoping, probably the best emulation on XP ive played yet for wolf3d.

on another note... back in the day, when i was in the menu for wolf3d, instead of hearing the adlib sound that u would get when u moved down a choice (like from "new game" to "sound") it sounds like a light "ba-boom" in dos-box etc, i would hear back in the day doing this it would sound like "chinka" but lol thats not spectacular but it is just an example of one of the differences that stand out... or maybe my comp back in the day sucked so bad it created a sound so off it was good for me... hmmm... anyone else heard this same thing?

The "sound" you're describing is MPU-401 Modulation. Sounds like the audio of your Win95 soundcard *wasn't* completely like the Adlib and Soundblasters. I'm afraid you'll have a really hard time trying to find modulation that sounds just like your Win95 soundcard. Sad

It might work better for you to try setting up your machine as a dual-boot system, where booting to Windows 98 is optional. This would probably allow you to run your Win95 soundcard drivers again. Win98 handles every driver for Windows 95 that I'm aware of.

If it's MPU-401, DOSBox will utilize it without emulation. At least according to http://ipggi.wordpress.com/2008/04/26/dosbox-sound-emulation/

Other cards can sound similar to it. Just not *exactly* like it. Sad

There are many software emaulators out there... WinAmp can play certain files. It depends on what you want to do...

That's because Wolf4SDL has multiple sound channels. Wolfenstein 3D can only play one digitized sound at a time. Wolf4SDL can play several, so a sound will not stop to make room for another.

I have a old sound card, a Yamaha (don't remember the specs, but works as soundblaster compatible). I remember the amazing tunes that little card have... Too bad that I can't plug it on my computer... Sad
I found this soundcard on a trashcan (lol), I clean it, search it's drivers over internet (dial up connect... before google becames the search engine), install and... works! Lots of hours of wolf3d and doom play...

For now, I'm really happy with opl emulation that mame have (used on dosbox and imflib.dll), sounds very good...
