Go to http://www.idsoftware.com/ and down to October 30, 2009. Can somebody please explain how Wolf3D Classic Platinum is updated?
It says that it has Spear of Destiny Episode 1, but that's nothing new since it's been out since 1992 or 1993. It says that you can download custom maps, and while I'm not sure which custom maps they mean, this isn't new to somebody who has heard of the free mods of http://www.wolfenstein3d.co.uk.news.htm , Diehard Wolfers Forum, and the Wolf3D Haven at http://wolf3d.darkbb.com . If you get to make your own levels with it, then I don't think that there's anything with it that you can't find in Wolfenstein 3D Super Upgrades from http://www.3drealms.com/downloads.html and in the web sites I've already mentioned.
On the instructions page at http://www.idsoftware.com/wolfenstein-3d-classic-platinum/mapinstructions/ , the userExample01 file won't download.
I'm wondering if 3D Realms and iD Software never spread the word about mods from The Wolfenstein 3D Dome, Diehard Wolfers, or The Wolf3D Haven on their web sites because they might believe that it takes away from the Wolfenstein 3D experience or they don't want somebody who doesn't work for Apogee, 3D Realms, iD Software, or Formgen Corporation working on their mods. |

3D Realms and Id Software have already made it clear that they don't support Wolf3D mods in any way. The problem is, when a user runs a Wolf mod, it crashes, and it gives the message "Call Apogee", 3D Realms and Id really don't want you to do this, as they didn't make the mod in the first place, nor can they do anything to fix the user's problem. The same thing happens when the user calls these two companies for hints on the Wolf3D mods, rather than the original Wolf3D games. |

John Carmack released an enhanced version of Wolf3D for the Iphone a while back "Wolfenstein 3d Classic v1.0".
A document John Carmack made about it's development: http://www.idsoftware.com/wolfenstein3dclassic/wolfdevelopment.htm
It was later updated to V1.1, which features Mac Wolf's 128x128 graphics for all non-bad guy graphics; John Carmack hired someone to create 128x128 graphics for the PC Wolf graphics that wern't in Mac Wolf. V1.0 of Wolf3D classic used the PC Wolf 64x64 graphics.
It seems that SOD was ported later and combined with Wolf3D Classic V1.1 to form the "Platinum" edition.
An enhanced version of Doom followed suit for which John Carmack wrote a similar development document: http://www.idsoftware.com/iphone-doom-classic-progress/
Intrestingly, the Doom document mentions that there was a sizable proportion of people that wern't happy that Wolf3D classic v1.1 used 128x128 graphics. |

For my comments about 3D Realms and Apogee not seeming to mention the mods web sites, I had forgotten to mention that I didn't like the random level generators for Wolfenstein 3D for very long. Maybe they at least don't like the random level generators anymore. You can make 60 randomly generated levels in about 5 minutes, but it won't be that good and almost nobody would want to play it for very long. |

Hi guys! I'm new here, so you'll have to forgive me if I faux pas a few times. I'm mostly here to answer stathmk's question and perhaps advertise a smidgen.

It says that it has Spear of Destiny Episode 1, but that's nothing new since it's been out since 1992 or 1993.
It's not really "new". It's just that the maps are now included in the Wolf3D download. They weren't before.

Again, this isn't really meant to be "new" per se. The feature allows you to take all those maps and run them on the iPhone. Without jailbreaking or some other non-standard method. Unfortunately, Carmack only included the ability to add maps. There's no support for updated graphics.

Are you trying from an iPhone or a PC? If you're on a PC, you can download it by changing the URL from this:
wolf3dp://transfer.idsoftware.com/public/greg/userExample01.map
...to this...
http://transfer.idsoftware.com/public/greg/userExample01.map
The special URL is intended to launch maps on the iPhone. It won't work on a PC.

I don't think that's entirely fair. Carmack actually turned to the community to create the iPhone edition. The code is basically the Wolf3D Redux project recompiled for the iPhone. And he left the back door open for the lot of us to load levels into the game.
Thus we get to the reason I'm here. If you've got an iPhone, open Safari and point it at this website:
http://www.wolf3dmaps.com
Basically, the site allows the community to upload their maps for other users to play. You can use this app to directly launch maps. While they will download into the game, it's actually better if you return to the site to launch each level. The reason is that when you launch the level externally, the game remembers your health and weapons. Which means you get that continuity between levels when playing through map packs.
I've designed the site with the intent of providing map authors with full credit for their work. In fact, I would prefer if the original authors uploaded their work themselves. However, there is no restrictions right now on who can upload. So if you see your work there and you didn't authorize it, please let me know and I'll take it down right away.
For those of you who like the site, I highly recommend you bookmark it to your home screen. I've put considerable effort into making the app behave like a real iPhone app. In result, you will get a superior experience when you create a home screen icon.
Please support this effort with by telling others and encouraging them to upload maps! What better way is there to spread the Wolf3D love than to support a device many people keep with them at all times?
Thank you all in advance for what I'm sure will be a very positive reaction. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to PM me and I'll answer as soon as I can. |

The only problem that I can see with the site (HTML Wise) is your rollover script.. it turns the links white on white... at least from the PC side of things... Not sure what it looks like on an IPhone...

There was actually a map hosting service up before that one (host is far more expensive, but the frontend is just a forum) at www.nick.fuseirc.net/forums/index.php?board=20.0.
Even though it's not my work, I highly reccomend uploading maps still to http://www.wolf3dmaps.com, especially considering the nicer frontend.
However, I did spend a fairly large amount of time converting and uploading a chunk of 60 level map packs to my server, and i'd hate to see them wasted. (also feel free to upload any huge archives you have there (this is still not a pleasent thing to do on http://www.wolf3dmaps.com (I hope he fixes that soon)).
I am working on a series of Wolf3D utilities for the iPhone/iPod, so keep an eye over on those forums over the next few months. |

Hehe, never saw that before. Although, I would call 130 maps a little more than a few dozen. |
