When I judged the levels in the 'Mapping Melee' contest, I found many of the levels so good that I couldn't find a clear winner. Who do you think made the best levels.

That's going to be a tough decision for me because almost all of them were good. It's a tough decision between Arielus, ack, Marin, and Chris cause of the tricks he uses. But I'm going to have to go with ack because his levels can be a pretty big challenge sometimes, and they're quite extensive. Smile

Yes! Loki knows! Martin was the best, in my opinion. Kreml 3d will surely be stunning.

Martin's levels for me, thanks.

Ack's and Chris's deserve honourable mentions.

We now have one person leading in this poll. For a long time there were at least 2 people joint equal, but with only 13 votes overall it's hardly conclusive. Neutral

I would have to say ack, his design seems a lot like Guy's, but with an end boss, besides his levels were fun. Second place would be a tie to Martin and Chris.

I voted ack, after just playing these maps a few days ago. But Martin was a really close second, Arielus was also very good, and even Chris came to my mind simply because I loved the tricks of E6L1.

But I need some help - how do I reach E6L4 from E6L3? I'm at the end of the red brick corrdior and have a silver door I can't open. Using MapEdit, I can't find any way to progress.

Noooooo... I wouldn't recommend opening that level in an editor! Oh My...

If you're really stuck, just use M-L-I for that part of the level (and lose your score). Now open the door and look - Cool eh?

I don't want to cheat, Chris. I didn't gather much from looking in an editor anyways since your levels are so complex (meant as a compliment, not criticism). Could you post or at least PM me a hint as to what the next step is from the area I described?

Thank you. And that sounds like a good idea!

Send me your saved game to chonospamkstanospam@hnospamotmanospamil.com with the subject "E6L3 Melee" and I'll point you in the right direction. Smile

Message is sent. It should be in your email. I forgot to attach the savegame in the first send so I had to send two messages. Sorry about that.

("E6L3 Melee" still contains the textual details, while the other message has nothing but the attachment of my saved game.)

Chris, I received your email and I think I'm on the right track but I sent another response (including my analysis of what it looks like you did with my savegame to get to your savegame).

If you could take a look and reply with what you think is appropriate, that would be appreciated. Smile Thanks.

I have to go to bed now (very late here), but thanks for the latest reply Smile and I sent one further reply asking just to make sure I have it down correctly now.

All relevant information is in the message as always, so if you could shoot a brief reply it would again be appreciated. Thanks.

Ok! BTW - the par time for E6L3 is 9:15. If you can beat that first attempt... you are awesome.

I just tried 3 runs through the level today (on "Bring Em On" without saving), and my best time to the elevator so far was 3:24... if you want a fun challenge to match later. Bear in mind that I was using the run/strafe keys like a complete maniac. Laughing

I'll probably try and complete the level (to E6L4) later today. Regardless of if it's necessary or if E6L4 is even worth playing, I want the satisfaction of having solved a big puzzle. I'm not worried about beating par though, I just want to make it through and the fewer times I have to email you a savegame asking for a hint, the better I've done! Smile

(Thanks for saying in email that I can feel free to contact you again if I totally get stuck though. Smile)

Also I'll email you or post here regardless when I make it through the map, if you're interested.

Also Chris, have you made any other huge released maps with big puzzles and lots of weird stuff akin to E6L1 and E6L3 here and Level 69 of ATAW3D (one of my favorite Wolf maps ever despite the difficulty!)? I know of Chokage and while it's weird alright, it just doesn't seem to pack the challenge and feeling of "epicness" these three maps do. If you have made any others you think can compete, please let me know.

Right on. Sounds good to me!
You can just send emails for tips if you want, as I can see in MSN if I get a new email whenever I'm online. Smile

Heh. Well Chokage was made when I was 14-16 years old, and I guess it shows. Laughing

I can't think of anything in particular... but if you like puzzles - The Tower and Temporary Insanity are pretty awesome (though I haven't finished either of them yet). From what I remember, Spear Resurrection: Level 21 was quite a fun challenge too.

Maybe others have some good suggestions. Have you made any wolf3d levels that you would describe as "epic"? You could submit something to DHW SDL Mapset - Spear Edition if you want, I'm sure they'd enjoy playing something like that. Thumbs Up

I'm not a level author myself at this point, just a player. Maybe, just maybe I'll contribute something to DHW SDL for Spear. You could also throw in a map there. Smile Thanks also for pointing out the other maps with weird things; I was familiar with them already, but the suggestions are appreciated nonetheless.

Anyways, please check your mail - I left you a little surprise you can look at. Smile

Can't speak for everyone involved Chris, but I'd be more than happy to have you submit any number of levels for the project! Smile

I think I should spread thoughts by author. As said above ack's my favorite, but by no means is it the only episode worth a play:

Arielus - Always makes good challenging maps, no exception here. His 2nd level has a bit too much mutants though. Overall 85% for his work.

ack - I don't think I need to say anything, it's ack, self-explanatory. 95% for his work.

Joe - Made just one secret level and I never got to play it.

Bernt Hansen - Didn't care for this, it was the first weaker episode. Just about an average score around 6/10.

Martin - Almost enjoyed his work as much as ack's. Low 90's for scores.

David O' Raffley - Didn't appeal to me much similar to Bernt Hansen 60% tops.

Chris - Shockingly close among my favorites due to some of the tricks he used (they're completely outclossed in aTAW Floor 69 though). Anyways I though Floor 2 was a bit of an odd weak link but Floor 3 was great and I'm rating Floor 3 based on you don't escape and look for that secret exit. That considered, he gets near upper 80's to near 90% from me. No ATAW3D Floor 69 though, that would score upper 90's on my chart.

Oh I forgot a Joe's E2L10, though it wasn't that great IMO, around 6 or 7/10. Also Harry Sr. made the concluding map should you find the secret elevator on E6L3 (though it was not a judged map). And it was a good ending too, not a bad map to find. About 8/10.

Arielus, ack, and Martin all have great work here, but there's no question in my mind as to who's best, and it's not one of those three, and certainly not David, Joe, or Bernt Hansen.
