Recently, I noticed something very strange: Many, many old messages on these forums have been edited out, with the message content replaced with "....." and, if it's the first message in the thread, the subject replaced with "HOT TOPIC".

Almost all of these messages were originally posted by Thomas, but at least one was posted by another editor.

Do a search for "hot topic", and you'll see what I mean. Smile

Why is this? Were these users' accounts compromised?

Thomas said it was some sort of practical joke or something, done by a friend. At least, that's how I understood it. Confused

I too take this you're referring to to be something done manually (and, hopefully, willingly) by the poster in question - or a friend of his/hers.

Someone else might certainly have a different take on this, so let us wait for others' responses...

Cheers,

Ariel

Good one, Chris...

In mid-2011 or something I was having one of those "I don't want to Wolf anymore" kind of crises. Haven't had one since. I mentioned in passing at the IT college on which I went then that I would love to go back and just delete everything I ever had to do with Wolfenstein, including posts and community presence. It's very odd, I know, but I certainly am not the only one (ack deleted all his posts as well, don't know why, maybe he went thru the same thing but did something about it himself) and I don't feel that way anymore, but this computer genius who sat next to me lurred my password, signed on to the board, changed my location and stuff etc. (not the first time he's done that, probably not the last) and just deleted away and re-named all my topics something from a Pablo Francisco in-joke. Some of those posts were quite major and it's a pity they're now gone. If only the music threads weren't locked. I mean, that's just 70 pages of bullshit from my end. Too bad, huh.

But why do you even care, Matthew? All Hot Topics were originally made by me and I'm not sure they'd interest you.

Actually, some of them were things I'm interested in.

In fact, a few of them were even replies in my threads.

Yeah, kind of is... but that's what some people think on the internet.... Delete it and it's gone... but there are those darn archiver sites like the Wayback Machine... And with those you can always go back and get (usually) the information that they have deleted. Depends on what the settings are for the site via the robots.txt file.

I was actually tempted way back then to install a few of the mods that they have for phpBB and have it so that you can edit the posts for say the first week or so... or until someone else posts after your post... But then I got hit by the car.... I've got the code here for it all, I just have to install it into the software and then upload the changes to the forums. But I've also been looking into converting the software over to phpBB 3.... So not sure which way that I'm going to go with that....

I understand the purposes of having a board, getting posts, retaining those posts so that it "looks real". But, you know, there are some people who never really find their "place" in whichever online community they may join, and really never secure themselves on posts and what they post. Eliminating the possibility of editing posts more than 1 week after the initial submission would be unwise, in my opinion. There are some people who just need that function.

Once I was a member of a board where the mods and admins apparently forgot to eliminate the "delete post" function for ordinary users. I can't even begin to tell you what a mess that made and how many correspondences that went lost or just lost their track and meaning entirely. I think, also, that's one of the main cons of the ability to edit posts. 'cause ack, myself, that damn guy from school and many others (Chris once edited a post 69 times - think it was just for gags, but nonetheless) - we just dot everything out if we get the chance. It's basically the same as deleting the entire post, only leaving the imprint that we did indeed reply to something.

And I dig the Way back machine. This forum has really changed an awful lot since... Well, haven't we just passed the 10th anniversary?!

We have, now haven't we? We should have worked on an anniversary mod or something to commemorate the occasion... Razz

Some other time, perhaps...

At least we can comfort ourselves with the fact that the DHWTC is out and has been for a while. I don't think we need to work our asses off on something. Just acknowledge that we've come a long way and it's been fun and it's been tedious, but there's still more to come. I mean, have you seen some of WLHack's new screenshots on the Haven forum? It's ridiculous. We're not done here, folks... Beer

There's lots going on, just not all can be, or chosen to be, revealed. There's lots worth waiting for that I've heard of, and I'm sure even more that I haven't! Cool

Unlimited edits actually is useful for this forum.

I've used it to update tutorials. Without it, I would have to post a new message whenever I updated the tutorial.
