I'm sitting here noodling with paint.net's re-coloring tool, and I realized I have no idea what I'm doing XD

If I continued this way, it looks like I'd end up having to match every shade of gray with its appropriate shade of brown (which I actually did with my first ever enemy graphics modification fyi), BUT.. I think there's a better way. The BEST way, in my mind, if it exists, is if somebody has actually done this before. I'm seeking a brown guard -- the same shade of brown as the original -- using the better body model of the white officer, a la Areyep's Spear Resurrection basic guard.

I realize the original guard has his own charm, totally respect that, giant head, awkward firing animation, but to me it simply looks like Adrian Carmack got better at drawing enemies as he went along, and by the time he got to the officer, his brown guard could have used some refurbishing. But again, beautiful art, nonetheless I want to see what it looks like this way. Any takers? If no I'll figure it out my way and be sure to post the results. Thanks guys.

EDIT: The guard is complete. I'll try to upload it somewhere, or if anyone's interested in having them, let me know.

You might use the Triad Guard as a base for your recoloring. The artist seemed use the head of the brown guard and the body of the white one.

I would recommend to use RecolorBMP, extract all officer sprites in one folder, and map the white-gray shade to become the brown as used in the basic guard (for this just try to analyze one or several frames of the guard). Then the 50 sprites are all recolored at the same time, the same way.

The thing is, I think the brown guard should appear to be slimmer than the officer because he is of a lower ranking, though a larger Officer sized brown guard would be awesome because it would make for a great Elite Guard.

Also the brown guard and the SS Guard are the oldest enemy sprites for wolf 3d

Here's the thing; the shades of grey aren't in one single place. They're in several places, and they're not placed in order. Of the all the colors in the palette, the grey is worst one to have to deal with.

I hadn't thought of starting with a sprite of a different shade, definitely worth a shot.

My God I forgot this was what you could do with RecolorBMP, thank you very much sir.

That was kind of my thinking as well, but I also see the potential argument that the guard and officer are "regular" sized guys, while the SS (and of course bosses, especially General Fettgesicht) are clearly large men. But I do see your logic and that's part of why I feel like there's a chance it just might not feel right once I see it. I'll post screens when they're done. And I hadn't thought of the elite guard idea Smile Or like a guard NCO, ha.

Tricob, you're a genius.

By the way, useful piece of information: this is the brown guard's palette range, and it's right in a row. Pretty nifty, would be neat to have a "key" for other common palette ranges. I think I also see the steel cyan range, the SS/blue brick range, pretty well-ordered.

The brown, purple, red, and blue ranges aren't completely in order, as you'll see extra darker shades near some of the extra grey shades. There's also grey, red, blue, cyan, and orange shadings all at the top. If you use the SOD palette, there's also two extra shades of green replacing the brighter shades of purple. Some of these colors repeat themselves in the palette, and some of them don't, as Adam Biser pointed out years back.

Hey Tricob so what would it take to get some up on Majik's Image World these days? This guard is done.

Majik hasn't been able to update the site in quite some time. Sorry to say it, but I don't see that changing any time soon. Sad
