So at least a couple of people feel this is pretty disappointing for a mod by ack. I haven't played it much if any, but what's your view?

Was expecting something really great and ended up getting very disappointed. It's pretty disheartening considering ack's portfolio. Hard to believe something could suck worse than RtD. Seriously, I didn't like it one bit.

Cannot speak about Get Lost!! but I don't recall being that intrigued by his Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold levels. Maybe he only really shines when working with the original Wolf3D/SoD resources or with TCs. He had also made a level in Treasure Hunt that's below what I expect from him. But his MotM Q2-3 levels in mid 2014 are very good.

I have only played Get Lost for about 5 minutes just to sniff around, when it came out. Don't remember much of it, so can't judge it at the moment. But ack is a very versatile mapper - don't forget that. The Anticipation, Operation Letzterschutz and original sets all at once - brilliant maps that do not look like each other at all. I was surprised to find out how large a chunk of Letzerschutz he was responsible for... I also enjoyed The Alliance of Powers, where he and Ariel mixed their very different styles to great results.

His mapping for both The Anticipation and Letzterschutz is really great.. he also did a great episode for the DHW mapset. Haven't played Get Lost yet, but I can't imagine it being that bad... can it?

The mapping structure is akin to that of acktung, and the graphics from The Lost Episodes don't compliment it that well. So it's a two-way street... The mapping is not bad per se but may not fit the LE atmosphere - again, it is difficult to play with the LE environment. It's not as fluid and easy to get around as with the Wolf/Spear environment.

It also looks like the original ceiling colors were kept.. that was another aspect that didn't gel well with the graphics at all.

Ha-ha, yes, I never quite did understand the Lost Episodes and how it was made. I mean... They utilized a green ceiling color - no green textures, brown ceiling color - no brown textures, olive ceiling - no slimy textures... I mean it was just ridiculous... Had they replaced them with more pastel, bright, futuristic ceilings they might have been on to something... But I guess it's all copyright and whatnot. I am thankful for LE but only because of very few original textures & sprites... Wolf Skevos-Jones saved the day for the LE environment by re-coloring it, making it classy, changing it around and utilizing it in a much better and professional fashion.

As far as I know, the designers of LE didn't have the source code, so they just changed the graphics and the maps. I don't know how many different versions of LE are out there, but the one I played ran through a Batch File menu or something, and used one EXE file while alternating through different VSWAPs, MAPHEADs, and GAMEMAPSs files through vanilla DOS commands.

Somewhat relevant to this poll - I have made a thread regarding more recent works by ack in general: http://diehardwolfers.areyep.com/viewtopic.php?t=7161

I just finished playing this set and voted Excellent. I can definitely understand why a Lost Episodes mapset can be frowned up right from the get-go based primarily on the original sets and, then, on the mapping resources available, but there can certainly be exceptions like this http://diehardwolfers.areyep.com/viewtopic.php?t=7223 and, to me, this set we're talking about here. I especially liked level 15 of the Return to Danger set...

ack remains my favourite mapper of all time along with AReyeP. Hopefully we'll see more of them in the future.

Cheers,

Ariel

I voted Excellent too; I have a bit of a soft spot for the Lost Episodes (Ultimate Challenge in particular) as it was the first Wolfenstein set I played that wasn't the original 60-map game, and this really did a good job of scratching the itch I had to revisit it. Smile

@AlumiuN: What you described sounds more like the community LE set, just noting.

Ah, whoops, I did indeed mean to post that in the community LE set. That'll teach me for having so many tabs open. Razz

I finished the first part, what I can say is it's a mixed bag of good and annoying to play maps.
Get lost is at his best when the level design is simple and don't throw thousands of pillars at your face. Some levels are very annoying to navigate because of that.
Overall not that bad but it could have been way better with some simplification in the level design.

(Also I will vote once I'm done with the second part)

This is more of an experimental set really - with a focus on narrow spaces + new, expansive ways to utilize sprites. I don't know if I can rate it, but I would certainly call it interesting and applaud ack for trying something different. It really feels like it's a set by a mapper who is still pushing to do new stuff; whether succesful or not, I appreciate the effort.
