I recently managed to get headshots working, but now I need animations. For now I just have them falling down faster, and silently, with more blood, but I want specific animations. Here's a wishlist:

Guard
- Takes the bullet in he helmet (will have appropriate impact sound)
- I want him to fall forward, as lifelessly as possible
- Gore emphasis on the exit wound

SS
- I think the existing animation is fine, but I would like the chest wound cleaned up
- bullet impact in his forehead, again emphasis on exit wound
- hat flying off

Officer
- would be cool to have him doing some kind of 'twisting' animation, like bullet catches him in the eye, knocks him off balance, falls on his side
- or simply falling forward again would be cool.

Mutant
- I'm toying with the idea of making the mutant only killable with headshots; you can rip into his body all you want, but he'll only truly go down if you shoot him in the head Smile
- If this actually works and is fun in-game, it would be fun (and completely do-able) to make his legs/lower body destroyable, so that when this happens, he resorts to crawling at you.

In a perfect world, I'd like two animations per enemy, but since at the moment I have ZERO, all is welcome. Thanks guys.

I used a gib death from Max's "The Untold Story" as a base for this.

I might make further, more customized edits to this.

Zach himself did a pretty decent SS dying sprite for his own Projekt: Vertilgung. It had a bullet hole through the head and the dead guard clutching his own neck while kneeling. It looked pretty terrifying when you're used to the same old same old!

Gerolf that looks just great. Do you mind if I use this as an alternate death sequence in the mod I'm working on? One thing I'll probably try to edit if you don't mind is removing the chest wound gore, giving a bit of an exit wound blood "splash", and making his hat appear to be falling off. I'm operating on an "philosophy of headshots", lol, where it should feel satisfying as if you've hit a bullseye on a target. The sound will be solid and satisfying (for the guard it will be a helmet clunk), they will go down faster and limply (instant death, no grabbing their wounds or bracing themselves on the fall) and in general it should feel as if you've 'popped their melon', as crude as that may sound. Also once I work out my scoring system (which will include unlockables), headshots will earn you bonus points, either by a multiplier or set points or what have you.

Thank you Thomas. I honestly look at it now and think 'ugh', but I do like the idea still. I've always been inspired by the detailed and varied death animations of GoldenEye 007 for the N64. Did you ever play this much? I always loved the super-rare 'gut shot', and I imagined I was only achieving this with high-caliber gun kills, or shotgun blasts, like you really tore him up. I'm a sick bastard, I know. Devil

Sure you can use it, and if you want a goreless SS death, download Hitler's Ark from the Wolf dome. It has goreless deaths for all guards that are based off the SNES death animations.

Then, check out The Untold Story by Max, it has some good alt deaths for the officer.

If you need other goreless deaths like for bosses, I have the SNES sprites.

LOL what is this mod?? It reminds me of Postal, really dark, even disturbing. I did not expect that. But wow, this is a gold mine for what I'm looking for. I'm not going for over-the-top gore in general, but the chaingun is going to be vicious, so these would help a lot to that end. Max, I'll be sure to contact him for permission at some point.

Goreless enemy deaths as well, yes thank you so much sir. If you think of any other mods or resources with alternate deaths, please let me know.

Goreless deaths for bosses however are not necessary, I think the only thing I plan to do different for them is allow them to enter a pain state after going below a certain health, and toying with the idea of an old-school, boss-gets-desperate-survival-instinct-kicks-in phase where he's faster, and MAYBE with an alternate attack, something like throwing grenades like a madman, we'll see.

Okay here is a goreless set of the guards and the guard dog. The BMPs come from Hitler's Ark (it's on Wolf 3d Dome) the GIF/PNG are from the SNES port and are official Id graphic edits, but the SNES version only has 3 frames for death animations, so I suggest using the frames from the SNES port, but use the ones from the Hitler's Ark mod for what isn't included in the SNES port.

Mucho Grazi! (That's Spanish + Italian for no reason whatsoever XD). I finally managed to get extra headshot blood decals spawning by setting some blood ejecta as projectiles, allowing them to make blood decal hitmarks when they hit a wall. Currently they're all over the place, but it works! I just had to share.

I think it might look better if the officer falls on his knees first, and then is shot in the head. That would require some coding, like giving the officer a third pain state where he falls on his knees, and either gets up or gets shot again and then the headshot death animation. Because right now, to me, it looks as though the officer receives a blow to the head twice. On the other hand, perhaps you should combine it with the first attempt. Because falling forwards makes more sense physics-wise.

Maybe it could use some inspiration from the Shotgun zombie marine from Doom's death sequence? After all, part of his head is ripped off when he is dying.
