I was curious to see how well Wolf3d maps could compress using Bytes instead of Words (0-255 instead of 0-65535), so I made a DOS exe that can convert and play maps in 4 different RLE formats:

I tested it on a few 60-level mapsets and here's

Does this reduce the size of gamemaps file?

Yes. You need to use the Expand routines from the source link (or use rleplay.exe) to read the RLE/RLEB/RLEF maps though.

Can you figure out what the "retrace" routines do to the maps generated in /nonames while playing them? Very Happy
