In my opinion, Wolfenstein will always be the longest running FPS series because addons are still being made and will continue to be made. Id Software, Apogee Software/3D Realms, and the Wolfenstein fan community have contributed a lot to making it the longest running FPS series of all time.

id also got awards for being the longest running FPS developer and the longest eSports scene with QuakeCon. Kudos!

I have enjoyed pretty much every Id game in history, except for Rage. Wolfenstein 2009 was also the weakest in the series but it was still worth a play.

Here is an excellent article from about a year ago on Wolfenstein from around the time the Old Blood came out. In my opinion, the Old Blood is the best installment in the franchise since RtCW in 2001, and is what was actually responsible for rekindling my interest in Wolfenstein. Like Doom 2016, it succeeded in bringing classic gameplay elements into the modern era without taking itself too seriously as too many modern shooters do.

I was pleasantly surprised by both The New Order/The Old Blood and Doom 2016. Both stayed true to the original in surprising ways, while taking the (old-school) gameplay to a whole new level. I'm not always that into newer games, but these two are pretty great! Smile

Yeah Wolf TNO was pretty fantastic. I still gotta check out TOB. Looking forward to continuation of the new series!

I like the Old Blood better than TNO myself, though both are great. Also, as a PC gamer I was happy to see that the PC version was more fine tuned than it was in the initial version of TNO. If I had to rank the Wolfenstein series, I would rank it as follows.

1. Wolf3D/Spear of Destiny
2. Return to Castle Wolfenstein
3. The Old Blood
4. The New Order
------
------
------
5. Wolfenstein 2009

The original will always be my favorite. The Old Blood was very close to RtCW. The only reason it's below it is the shorter length.

Wolfenstein 2009 went to far too try to please Call of Duty players in my opinion. The regenerative health system, toned down graphics (compared to what id tech 4 was capable of), completely linear levels with no exploration at all, and the fact that the PC version seemed like an afterthought rubbed me the wrong way.

Agreed, Wolfenstein 2009 is indeed not that great. Too generic.

I prefer RTCW and Wolfenstein 2009 over the new series. Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny including the Lost Episodes will always be the best games in the series in my opinion. The final boss fight between BJ and Hans Grosse make Wolfenstein 2009 great in my opinion. I felt that fight stayed true to Wolfenstein 3D more than any modern game did since it featured by favorite videogame boss of all time. The regeneration health is kinda lame though. I want to eventually play Wolfenstein the New Order and the Old Blood. They are cool looking games. Both games seem like fanfiction to me due to the alternate timeline though.

Interesting facts: Wolf TNO is a sequel to Wolf '09, just like Wolf '09 was a sequel to RTCW, but RTCW would've been canon to Wolf '09 and Wolf TNO if TOB wasn't made as it effectively retcons RTCW because you're back in Castle Wolfenstein again. So it is effectively a reboot of the series in its own timeline altogether.
