Here it is, I hope I've set the poll up correctly!!! Smile

The Die Hard Wolfers Map of the Month Competition for August 2007!!!

This month we have 12 entries, a few less than last month, but I think we're in for something special. Thanks to BrotherTank, wall switches, new sprites and new wall textures are big new additions to the gameplay this time around. What do we have in store for us? Let's find out!

MAP OF THE MONTH DOWNLOAD AUGUST 2007 - DOWNLOAD HERE: www.areyep.com/Mmc_aug.zip

And to quote Greg who came up with the whole concept of the monthly mapping competition ...

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!

Downloaded and checking it out right now... so far it looks quite good, I feel that the quality will be at least as high as July's.

Why do I always keep taking shots at this Hitler statue?

These levels have such intimidating names! I played through the beginning of each really quickly and died really quickly. This is going to be a fun month.

Heh, at least they're not moving... but every time I see them standing in the distance, I think "Hitler!" and shoot at it, ignoring the crowd of enemies around. I wonder if others also do. Smile

Okay. I've just started, and man, this is going to be hard to vote. (and play for that matter)

Too bad we have to await for the results...

Speaking of which:
@Steve.. noone has voted yet but shouldn't we not be able to view the results until after the poll has expired?

Never mind that. I just clicked the link and all the stuff was as it should. Embarassed

Errrr, ahhhhh, yup ... if you get the coordinator job, just make sure you retick the "hidden poll" option at the very bottom if you edit your initial post, as it resets to "unhidden" every time you edit it seems! Thanks to Andynonomous for PMing me about that Smile Saved me a LOT of embarrassment! Embarassed

I look forward to playing these soon. I'm at someone else's machine right now, but I intend to download this tonight (or earlier, if my Internet will let me get away with it) and get started playing everyone's level.

It's going to be interesting seeing another AReyeP level to be sure, and it'll also be interesting seeing how people use the special features. I imagine I'll come across some maps demonstrating absolute brilliance, at any rate. Smile

I can't even get past the second room in level 1! I'm sure there's some way to do it, but damn...that was quite a wake up call. and level 4 has a hell of an introduction. It might take me a whole month to get through these levels.

To be honest Jack... lol... I don't even know if my map can be beaten... The deadline was so close and I had to remove doors to get the map working again... I'm thinking we might need to increase the door limit like we did for the static sprites and number of items visible at any one time... lol...

Anyhow... I won't tell you which one mine is, but I will say that it's hell and with all the changes I made, I haven't even beaten it myself.. lol... I hope that we all remember this next month as it seems that we've gone into Master type maps... Not that that is a bad thing... lol... but wow... I have to stop playing it until I finish adding the other things everyone wanted for the October release... lol...

The other thing that got me was that in less than 12 hours of the release... people are voting already... wow... So who's finished the game already??

I tell you what ... If you haven't let me know by tonight that you've gotten past the first three rooms of Level 1, I should have it figured out by then. Thankfully, the Internet is cooperating with me earlier than 7 P.M. (often the case on the weekends), so I should have an answer for you by then. Smile

There's also someone who voted for three levels, Thomas, so it's not only you. Smile I don't know, maybe someone voted according to his initial reactions... For me it's difficult to imagine that anyone could beat all those maps in one day.

Heh, now I'm even more pessimistic about my level. It again seems to me to be far worse than others... This is one great compilation of levels. I'm already anxious about the results

(and damn those Hitler statues!)

looks like the beginning of map1 is possible, just very, very difficult (at least on IADI). It was not too bad after that and the texturing was really nice (I really dig some of those new textures), though there were a billion secrets I apparently missed.

Ah, yes ... Level one. There's a trick to that second room Adhesive mentioned. The guys who attack you can't actually enter the room you open the door from, or even open up the door, even if it's to their own disadvantage. What I did was open up the door, fire a couple of shots, closed the door, and waited for them to come as close to me as they would come.

After that, it's pretty much a repetitious cycle from there - Open the door, fire a couple of shots at someone, close the door, wait for all the jokers to finish firing at you, then repeat the cycle until everyone is obliterated but you.

That's pretty much what I did Smile It took me a few attempts but after that I was OK. The potplants either side of the door make it tricky as it's harder to take cover to the sides of the doorway. It's amazing how those blocking codes can be used to force a change in a player's strategy isn't it? Smile

I was pretty amazed at the first 3 votes coming in so early too. They were posted at least just under 5 hours after I made the game available for download. Could someone have finished all the levels in under 5 hours? Not impossible I suppose but I doubt it. I tend to think they've given each level a quick whirl, checked each of the levels in a mapeditor, and then cast their vote. Anyway, I won't be voting until I've played every level through completely. I'm up to level 2 - a level a day is my aim Smile

I've been kind of skipping around with the levels, (playing them in no peticular order.)

Level 4 - Cleavered Up
I am completely stupped on this one. There's not a weapon for you any where. And unless you open push walls with something other that 'SPACEBAR' I can't find anything...

Once someone else has played this can could they give me a couple pointers? I'd prefer to not look at the maps in an editor (it ruins the experience for me). Smile

Funny I just finished playing this level now!!! The first few times I tried hiding in the secret pushwall alcove where the machine gun was, but eventually was overwhelmed each time. In the end I thought "to hell with you mutants", and decided to run in through the door where the big white guy lurks and to the area behind his lair - there is ammo and health galore back there, and from this point on I think you'll enjoy the level immensely.

So far every level I've played has been tough, but not ridiculously so (I've been playing on Death Incarnate). Each level so far has been outstanding. Voting is not going to be easy.

Well, my trick is holding out on gunfire until I get to the Chaingun area itself. If you fire a shot before then, you're probably in overwhelming trouble.

I've played that level too Lozer_42 and did the exact same thing. I realised when the first time I automatically started shooting at him and realised that I only had the pistol and thought, 'hmmm can't see me getting out of this one alive if I stick around...'

When you start don't disturb anyone, when you open the door to his lair, lure him out around the central brick section then nip in quickly thorough his door, but be careful, he's not alone in there. When you get through and find the stuff you'll be right and the level will go from there.

Has anyone played level 9 - Fun with Adolf? Now I'm not sure but is this level meant to be a joke? I seriously can't get any further than a few steps into the level every time, I just honestly can't see anyway to go anywhere or do anything in the level.

from what I can tell in level 9, you need to run past the SS guards at the beginning and run to the left side in the next room where there's a bit of health and to avoid fire from the officers/hitler.

Thanks for the help Jack, you can actually run to the right as well and there are some dinners waiting there as well. As to where you go or how to avoid the collectives of officers behind barrels then I don't know, I just keep dying. I'm sure now that theres a way to do things but I suspect this level is going to take a LONG time to work out the correct way to play it and the right way to get around each trap. Good luck with everyone - your gonna need it!

I think I know what to do, at least for the first part. I tried out this method and it turned out to be effective. Shoot the dog, run forward, quickly open the door, immediately go left and speed towards the corner. There, grab the dinners (though this might be done with minimal health loss) and run to the right, ignoring the wooden door at the left-hand wall for now. Grab the chalices. Now, there is actually an arrow made of... bones which points to a wooden door, the left one of the pair opposite to the starting area. Run towards it and quickly enter. At this point, I had 80 percent of health, so it's possible. Ignore the Hitler Ghost and quickly run towards the next room, take the ammo boxes, first aid kits as many as needed, the machine gun and red key. Immediately turn back to the Hitler Ghost and keep shooting. It's well possible to kill it and avoid all the fireballs. I didn't try anything further yet, so this is all the help I can give. Hopefully this isn't too confusing.

Maybe it's just me (and I've only played the first two levels) but I'm having a LOT of trouble finding secrets. How is everyone else going with this? I appreciate that the switch feature multiplies the ability to hide secret areas and the keys to them, but even allowing for that, this aspect is really tough Confused .

And no, I haven't just been doing the keep-turning-left (or right) thing.......are others recognizing clues in the maps to finding the secrets or using some methodical way to find them?

The only real way to find them all is simply to search every single wall and especially search for secrets walls inside of other secrets, thats always a common trick.

I do this as I'm a '100% of everything' guy and Par times have no interst for me.

The other thing I would like to know about the voting is 'How many people have previously or this time around are voting for their own map?' The reason I ask this is because I don't see any need to vote for your own map, this is simply just self praise and there shouldn't be any need for this if you are happy with your map. And to be honest If I've played your map and formed an opinion of it I'm not suddenly going to change my opinion of your map or think your a better mapper because your level got votes...
