Th multiple chunk importer seems to work incorrectly for VSWAP. It think that the Sprite 0 is equal to wall 0.

OK, I have fixed it... expect the update soon, but since you're on vacation there might be 10+ more updates by the time you get back. Smile

All projects are slowly starting to resume.

Version 1.8.223 is out.
This fixes some bugs with the multiple chunk importer and also adds the ability to check the internet for updates by going to Help->Update. If there is a new version available, it will ask you to go to the download page. Hopefully that works out alright.

Do you think that there is any chance that you will make a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor for the ENDART?

Yep, actually it'll be in the next update. I have it working for Wolf3D/SOD type files. Blake Stone ENDART is not quite done because it uses a completely new set of command codes. I don't know if I will complete the Blake Stone part of it before I release the next update or not. Either way, expect an update within a few days.

OK, WDC 1.9.233 is up.
It has several new things:
- A simple graphics editor with Unlimited Undo/Redo, Fill, Rectangle, Rectangle Outline, Color Pick and Cut/Copy/Paste.
- An ENDART viewer. (Partially works with Blake Stone). The help file has a list of the commands and what they do.
- The Wolf3D/SOD Sound Guide was added to the help file. Thanks to Sockman for typing up most of the descriptions.
- The AUDIO and AUDIOHED files can now be compiled for the EGA games.
- Various other small changes and bug fixes.

Try running Help->Update to see if it tells you that there is a new version. I might make it do this for you automatically in the next version - adjustable by preference, of course.

WDC is starting to wind down quite a bit. So it looks like mainly bug fixing and maybe a couple of other things here and there.

When I was going to check out the updated Endart editor, this happened. This happens whenever a text is in the window, when I am writing "^P" it doesn't happen until after I press "P".

I also don't think the placement of the Endart viewer for the replacement file is correct in this image. When I resize the window, it pops into the correct place.
It seems that the placement changes (into this) when I restore from a maximized window.
It also pops into the correct place when I minimize the window to the taskbar and restore it.

And when I'm in a maximized window.

I am using 1.9.233

OK, I fixed the viewer placement bug, but I couldn't duplicate the ^P error. Let me know if it still happens in the next update.
The ENDART viewer isn't perfect by any means, but it can give you a good idea of what it will look like.

Released: WDC 1.9.236
- Updated the ENDART viewer. (Hopefully this also fixes your problem The_EgAt)
- Made some changes to WDCMapData.WL1/WL6/SDM/SOD. If you have edited these files, back up your copies.
- Improved the map difficulty calculator. Map Difficulty Adjustments are stored in the WDCMapData files.
- Added a primitive and very incomplete random map generator.
- WDC now checks for updates at startup. (This can be shut off.)

Man, I haven't been around here for awhile. Looks like you've been doing some great work as usual, Adam. I've been taking an unofficial break from Wolf3d for awhile, but now I'm getting back in to try to hammer out a release project, and I've started using WDC again, and as usual I've got some suggestions for ya to throw in. Enjoy!

*(AdLib Sounds/IMF Music)-Maybe an option in File->Preferences to boost the audio when playing these chunks to a higher volume, as they are usually difficult to hear at nominal computer volume (or maybe its just my speakers Mr Green )

*(Digital Sounds)-Include an option to slow down sound files to half speed if they are played sped up on some systems (like my Wolf3D editing system, Windows 98 )

*(Read This!/Endart Editor)-Force the screen with the text box to scroll down as you move through the graphics panels as they will appear in game.

*(Read This!/Endart Editor)-Add a wordwrap function in the editing window to make the text easier to read.

*(Read This!/Endart Editor)-Add an option to add the 4 VGAGRAPH graphics that surround the Read This!/Endart window (Gray bricks in default Wolf3d, VGAGRAPH chunks 6-9). Also, add an option to change the background color of the graphics viewing window. (The two features are used together to see if the VGAGRAPH graphics now match a new background color changed in the source code)

*(Read This!/Endart Editor)-Add buttons for the Read This!/Endart Functions (i.e. ^c00, ^G66,16,3, etc.) Further detail below.
-Upon clicking the button to add a ^C symbol, load a new palette window to select the new color. Perhaps show colors used earlier in the document.
-Upon clicking the button to add a ^G symbol, load a new window showing two panels, and two input boxes. The first panel will cycle through the VGAGRAPH chunks (sized at 320x200) and the second shows the graphical view of the current page you are on. The two input boxes will be used to align the picture to a specified location. Update the preview document window when the chunk is changed, or any input value is modified.
-Add butons to include the ^P and ^E commands.

*(VSWAP Walls Editing)-Add a new function for a window allowing you to confirm the continuity of two wall graphics placed next to each other (i.e. Grey Brick 1, and Grey Brick 2) Two smaller windows in this popup window will show the two graphics, and scroll bars under these windows will allow you to cycle through the VSWAP walls. A checkbox should be added to display the darkened wall, or to be more exact, the second graphic tied to the same Wall ID.

*(VSWAP Sprite Editing)-There is a color of purple that is the exact same visible color as the transparent purple in the Wolfenstein palette. An option could be added to automatically replace all non-transparent purple pixels with transparent ones, either upon a user input or the error that there are said pixels in the graphic.

*(VSWAP Sprite Editing)-There is an error regarding sprites imported into WDC not being of the same default palette as your project. An option should be included to convert these to the palette used by your project.

*(Bug)-If you click on a button to change to a new function window while WDC is still loading, the File taskbar turns completely white, resembling a crashed program, but in reality WDC has actually just frozen and updates the window when loading is complete.

@Sockman: Glad to see you back around here.

Here some answers (in the same order that you stated them):
1) I'll see what I can do about the IMF volume. I think Ripper updated the IMFLib.dll to increase the volume... I'll have to check into that.

2) The digital sounds are playing fast on your machine? Hmm...

3) EndArt scrolls with page - Good idea. I'll make it an option.

4) I'll see if I can make wordwrap an option too.

5) Well, the ENDART borders might not be an option. I'm trying to keep this compatible with a bunch of games and their border graphics and not always the same spot. I might be able to get this going some time though.

6) Buttons for Read This!/Endart Functions - Also a good idea.

7) I'll see about some sort of 'Place beside wall #" option.

8 ) I could add this check.

9) Palette conversion is something I'm thinking about. It wouldn't take long.

10) This pause is likely due to WDC checking the internet for updates. If you don't want this to happen on startup (and just want to check manually), just disable it in the preferences. Maybe I should just make it check once a week instead.

EDIT: All posts prior to June 2004 were removed to conserve space.
I have a copy of the complete thread if anyone wants it for some reason.
During this process, a new WDC thread was created from the newer posts.
You will need to watch this new thread to receive any notifications.

Found two bugs today. When I exit out of WDC on my Windows 98, I get the following:

And there is a major crash when importing, or trying to play imported digital sound effects, yet they compile to the VSWAP and work in the game. Wierd stuff.

@Sockman: Try renaming IMFLib.dll to something else and see if it goes away. Invalid page faults are by hardcore C++ stuff, not VB. If I don't handle the error, VB sends a runtime error and crashes. Means I'm STILL not talking with Ripper's DLL nice enough....

The digital sound effects won't play? That's a new one. You mean the VSWAP sounds, right? The ones you said were playing too fast a couple posts back? They play fine on mine... but I'll look into it.
Anyone else with Win98 have this problem?

Yep, worked fine on exit after renaming ImfLib.dll. This is only on my Windows 98 though, strange.

VSWAP Sounds:
@ Windows 98: Sounds already in the VSWAP play fine, just sped up.
@ Windows XP: Sounds already in the VSWAP play as they sound in the game.

Imported VSWAP Sounds:
@ Win98 & WinXP: When you try to import a sound, WDC crashes. The file is still listed as an imported sound, and when you click on that chunk in the sound panel, the same crash occurs. However, the VSWAP compiles fine and the sound plays in game.

@Sockman: Yes this is the ongoing saga of Win95/98 WDC vs IMFLib.DLL. It's not a problem with the DLL, because Win 95/98 ChaosEdit users don't have the problem. So it's something wrong with how I call it. Namely, how I close it down.

For Win98: Could you try exporting the VSWAP sound to a file and playing it in your system's WAV player. Does it sound right, or sped up? I'll have to see if any API calls I make are more 2000/XP-specific, which I doubt. What version of IE do you have on that machine?

I think I can duplicate the import error bug. Thanks for pointing that out!
Everyone avoid that part until the next update. I'll make it ASAP.

EDIT: Imported sound playback problem solved. An update will be posted soon. WDC *should* let you know about it when it starts up, unless you have that option disabled.

WDC v1.9.237 is out.
- Several of Sockman's suggestions were implemented: ENDART word wrap and repositioning with page scroll, side-by-side view for wall editing
- Fixed the imported sound playback crash.
- The Adlib Sound current position display updates again.
- Uses the latest version of IMFLib.DLL in hopes of fixing the Windows 95/98 exit crash. (Please let me know if it works)
- Tried to fixed the "Object not set" error when editing a ENDART chunk. (Let me know how it does The_EgAt)
- No more "clsVGAGraph.ConvertTextToFont" errors for Operation BodyCount.
- Now includes all the Operation BodyCount palettes from the EXE file. Turns out it has 3. 2 for the VGAGRAPH and 1 for the VSWAP.

The error stopped coming, but isn't it supposed to preview the endart while you edit it?

The preview in the main WDC window works correctly

In case you were wondering, the text in the screenshot is in Icelandic Cheesy Grin

@The_EgAt: No, that's just my new way of eliminating bugs. Just stop the functionality. Laughing
But yeah, I'll take a look into it and see what's up.

EDIT: Strange, mine does refresh. Rolling Eyes I notice that there's a character after the ^C00 in the edit screen but not the main window... It still doesn't show up without that box character?
The really strange thing is that there's no OK button. Are you editing straight from WDC? Or by sending WDC a file to edit?

EDIT 2: WDC v1.9.238 is out with a couple of fixes to the ENDART editor.
Fixed: The editor would reposition at the top of the page when you typed in it.
@The_EgAt: Your problem should be fixed, but please let me know if you were using the ENDART editor as a "standalone" editor, or from inside of WDC.

Just the IMFLib one, not digi sounds. Plus, I gave up on Win98SE for WDC. Now I use XP all the time.

@ZuljinRaynor: Yeah, makes sense that they would stop without IMFLib.dll then. Hmm, and here I was hoping to know if it finally worked with Win98. Sad

I am/was using the standalone version, it does preview when I edit from inside WDC (I didn't know that was possible Very Happy) <- 1.9.237

Now this happens when I open the standalone editor. It doesn't even show the main window. <- 1.9.238
The editor inside WDC works perfectly (I think). <- 1.9.238

@The_EgAt: Here's the outcome: no preview in the standalone editor. The reason: There's no VGAGRAPH file to get the font and pictures from. So I'm just going to change the standalone so that the preview window and such is hidden from view and the error will disappear.

All of the "standalone" editors are also available within WDC. If you look at their shortcut properties, you'll see that those editors are still WDC, just with a command line parameter to take you straight to the edit screen.

@ZuljinRaynor: Yeah, makes sense that they would stop without IMFLib.dll then. Hmm, and here I was hoping to know if it finally worked with Win98. Sad

I'm sorry htat you cannot fix it. But I am using it in XP to get around this.

Oh and I need the new VB files cause the installer said I have an older version but the one on your site it SP5 from 2001. I found SP6, but that didn't help. Could you tell me where to get the latest files?

@ZuljinRaynor: I don't think it matters which VB version you have. I use an older VB on one machine and don't notice any difference. It checks for SP5. SP6 is the latest, but I don't have it installed. I thought that SP5 would be the last version, so any non-SP5 version will make it say that it's older. Just don't worry about it. Smile I'll just get rid of that message in the install.
I'm hoping I did fix the Win98 problem, but I'm just waiting for someone to let me know.

If you look at their shortcut properties, you'll see that those editors are still WDC, just with a command line parameter to take you straight to the edit screen.

I actually knew that, I just didn't know of the "Edit>Edit Data" Cheesy Grin

When I am drawing a solid rectangle in the graphic editor, the rectangle doesn't come if I release the mouse button outside the drawing area*.
I was drawing an image using the pencil and when I drew a line across the image, the pencil did not keep up with my mouse.

* I don't know if it is supposed to, but I thougt I would tell you in case it is...

Version: 1.8.238

@The_EgAt: I'll look into both of these things and try to get the graphics editor a bit better. I don't know if I can get the pencil lag problem much better, but I'll try.
