If there are any other true wolfenstein based games that I don't have, or you have different signon screens than the ones listed here, please screen grab the signons and either post them here for everyone or send them to me via email: diehardwolfers@areyep.com

Here are the differences that I can see between the different versions of Wolfenstein that I own and have in my personal collection:
___________________________________________________________________
Wolf 3d Shareware:

Files extention: WL1 - Episodes: 1 - Maps: 10
All Versions Distributed: Apogee software and millions of people via BBS's (prior to the internet).

Version 1.0: Some of the 1.0 versions had a working map system which was disabled in proceeding versions.

Version 1.1: Changed the code for map handling (using Carmack compression).

Version 1.2(4): Really 1.1 with a mapfix. 1.4 some minor code adjustments. No changes to the other game files.

The basic difference between 1.0 and the others is the Carmack map encoding compression that is used. 1.0 will not read 1.1(+) style compression and vise-versa. The signon screens all have the Apogee logo. The gamefiles themselves are limited selection of the graphics and sounds only required for the first 10 maps or episode 1. Select any of the episodes 2 to 6, and the game gives the message view the "readme to see how to buy the extra missions / nocturnal missions / or all 6 missions.
___________________________________________________________________
Wolf3d WL3 Version:

Files extension: WL3 - Episodes: 3 - Maps: 30
Distributor: Apogee Software

The version I have is 1.1 Carmack compression. First 3 episodes are selectable on the menu, the last 3 show the "view the readme to see about buying the next 3 missions". The signon screen has the Apogee Logo. Contains all the graphics and sounds required for the 6 episodes, but only 30 maps in the mapfile. The Readme Screen is enabled as it is in the Shareware.
___________________________________________________________________
Wolf3d WL6 Version:

Files extension: WL6 - Episodes: 6 - Maps: 60
Distributors: Apogee Software, GT Interactive, and Activision

The WL6 or full version of the game removed the "readme" as you didn't need all the "buy this" information. The endgame screens were removed but they enabled the additional Red background screen during signon saying: "This game is not shareware.. etc..".

There are 3 versions of this wl6 extension - 1 with Apogee logo on the signon - 1 with GT interactive logo on the signon - and 1 with Activision on the signon. Also available in Spanish (I don't have the original so I can't really compare it and tell what screens were available).
___________________________________________________________________
Wolf3d WJ6 Version - Japanese Full Version:

Files extension: WJ6 - Episodes: 6 - Maps: 60
Distributor: Imagineer Software

Gamemaps/Sounds/Grahpics are the same as WL6 english version, but the vgagraph file contains pictures and screens (various sizes up to full 320x200 graphics). This modified Vgagraph file allows them to display things like the "Read Me" (which is enabled - 10 Graphic screens rather than using the internal readme files as in the WL1 shareware version of the game). Basically, they overlay numbers over these pictures to produce the Japanese screens. The main font within the game is "English" or a western character set. The red "This game is not shareware"... is removed. All other files seem to be the same as the english WL6 ie: no difference to sounds and graphics. The signon screen has the "Imagineer" logo. Files are dated: 02/04/93 and 03/04/93 (to give an idea about their release date).

Other Variations of the game that I have include:
___________________________________________________________________
Wolfenstein Beta: 10 Level Beta of the game
Distributor: Id Software
Thanks to Chris - it was made available to download for the community. Not sure where or how he got it, but it was a treat for most collectors.
___________________________________________________________________
Spear of Destiny: Commercial Demo

files extension SDM - 2 level playable, interactive demo) Uses version 1.2 of the exe and caches the graphics for the game differently from Wolf3d, to save memory.
___________________________________________________________________
Spear of Destiny:

Full version. 20 Levels - File Extension: SOD.
Distributor: Formgen
Uses version 1.4 of the exe and caches the graphics for the game differently from Wolf3d, to save memory.

___________________________________________________________________
Spear of Destiny Mission Pack 1: Return to Destiny

Distributor: Formgen - Also distributed in the Activision pack which includes Wolf3d, SOD, and the 2 SOD Mission Packs.
Requires full version of SOD. 20 new levels with all new graphics and sounds.
___________________________________________________________________
Spear of Destiny Mission Pack 2: The Ultimate Challenge

Distributor: Formgen - Also distributed in the Activision pack which includes Wolf3d, SOD, and the 2 SOD Mission Packs.
Requires full version of SOD. Basically 20 more new maps for SOD Mission pack 1. ___________________________________________________________________

Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold

Files extension: BS1 Shareware - BS6 for the full version
Distributor: Apogee Software

- Available in a 10 level shareware and then the 66 level full version by Apogee.
___________________________________________________________________
Blake Stone: Planet Strike

Files extension: VSI - 20 Levels
Distributor: Apogee Software

- New Storyline, levels, and graphics. No shareware version was made.
___________________________________________________________________
Noah's Ark 3d:

Distributor: Wisdom Tree Software
Files extension: N3D - 30 Levels divided into 6 episodes - No shareware version.

This version has an overhead map that really is a treat. Game is Bible based, so it might not be of everyone's taste. Has some very unique features that are not in the Wolfenstein games
___________________________________________________________________
Operation: Body Count :

Distributor: Capstone Software / Intracorp
Shareware: 10 Levels
Full: 39 Levels - File extension: BC
___________________________________________________________________
Corridor 7:

Distributor: Capstone Software / Intracorp
File Extension: C07 for both the disk and CD versions of the game.
Shareware: 10 Levels
Full: 35 Levels

This game allowed people to play over a network. Up to 12 people could battle the aliens within the game. The CD version also has music tracks which play during the game (not just midi style songs).

___________________________________________________________________

---< Things I don't have, but have been told about >---

Wolf 3d Spanish: Files extention: WL6 - Episodes: 6 - Maps: 60

I'm still looking for the Spanish version "Original" box set, so I not only have them all, but can also see any differences in the vgagraph and vswap files. By the looks of things though, it looks like they just changed the exe to display words in Spanish (but can you trust the source as it looks like the released stuff is/was an edited version). There are no special graphic handling routines like they have for the Japanese version of the game in source code.

I've made my own Spanish version, but it took a little adjusting of the code.... So there may be some differences in the vgagraph file as to font size..
___________________________________________________________________
Wolf 3d Shareware Japanese: Files extention: WJ1 - Episodes: 1 (incomplete) - Maps: 3

Same as Wolf 3d Full Japanese version except that it only contains the first 3 levels in the mapfiles. When you have completed the first 3 levels the game quits, telling you to purchase the full version. The vgagraph is modified for Japanese graphic sets as it is in the full. Includes 10 readme screen pictures in Japanese (also in the WJ6 version (full 320x200 pics)). Uses Carmack 1.1 compression on the maps. The signon screen has the "Imagineer" logo.

You seem to be missing shadowcaster made by raven. It used a heavily modifed version of the wolf 3d engine, but it was the wolf 3d engine.

Brian Raffel wrote:
ShadowCaster was done in 1992-1993. We started off doing it for EA and it was to be Black Crypt II. After we had the game designed, EA bought Origin and felt that we should take advantage of the Ultima World and make it some type of Ultima game. We started to turn it into an anti-Paladin Ultima game. Then it was decided that perhaps we should make it into a Bard's Tale spin-off. But that too fell by the wayside, and finally we came up with the idea of morphing a character into different types of creatures that had different abilities. We licensed a pre-Doom engine from id and we were underway with ShadowCaster. I must add that I really loved the concept for ShadowCaster, but hated the story and the name, and wish I could go back and redo it!

You can check out more information at http://www.raven-games.com/games.php?i=shadow

Now with enough pestering we might be able to get the sourcecode to that bugger Wink

What about including the Wolfenstein versions made for other systems/platforms? Such as the ones for Macintosh, Jaguar, etc. Or is this just supposed to be a list of the PC versions?

In all the cases above, you all missed 1 line from my first post:

Oops, sorry about that BT. It seems that since I am just one large eye, I lack depth perception. Mr Green

I'm sorry to sound like the biggest n00b ever, but, where did you get all these versions, BrotherTank? I mean, I had version 1.1 at one time, and I d/l'ed the Alpha Shareware once, but truly didn't know there were this many versions! Neutral

how do I tell what version I have. The only thing I see different from some other versions is a do not distribute screen at the end that threatens hard drive deletion.

I bought them... lol.. or traded for them... And yes... I don't have the actual Beta version... that would have been neat to get a hold of. As for the others... you may be able to find them on places like Ebay and the like... but they rarely give you that information...

When the game first starts, you will see the signon screen... with the memory numbers etc... in the bottom right hand corner is the version number...

How I always figured it out, I looked at the color of the signon. If it's solid red, it's an older version like 1.1, 1.0, etc., But if the color looks a little more detailed, it's probably 1.4 . I don't know, thats just how I always figured it out. And for any different versions, I think I remember seeing the retail Shareware 1.4 have a different signon. I don't remember it much, but I think it had sort of like the look of SoD's but with red instead of blue.
