How ya'll doing guys? Been a while. I do have some great news though. I just received an e-mail from Les Bird, the programmer for the Capstone 3D games, saying that he came across some old files and items for Corridor 8 and would like to send them to me to spread across the community. Instead of going into detail, I'll just put what Les wrote...

"I came across some old Corridor 8 stuff that I'd like to send your way so you can share it with the community. What I have is the latest source code for the game as well as a very early prototype. Since we didn't have a whole lot of artwork done for the game at the time we used place holder art and sounds from the original Doom game. I also found the original Corridor 8 design doc. I'll photo copy it and send it along.

"Let me explain a little about the game ideas we had. First, the game was going to ship with an integrated level editor. It was the original Build editor but integrated into the game along with some nice enhancements. This much was already finished in the prototype. You could edit a level then switch to game mode and play the level then switch back to edit mode and make more changes. It actually worked quite well. Another idea for the game which you can see in the prototype menu is the ability to play either the Axis or Allied sides. This feature wasn't playable in the prototype. You can read more about this in the design doc. We had planned to build 60 levels, 20 weapons and 18+ actors - yes, a very optimistic goal."

Also included with the prototype are other "test" levels that may be interesting to look at. Some of them demonstrate the new features we had planned to include in the game."


Don't know about the rest of you, but it sounds pretty sweet! I'll have it up on my site as soon as I receive the package. I'll keep you informed.

Great news!!!!

Since OBC:RDX appears to be on hold for the forseeable future, I propose a team be assembled to do something with this engine STAT!!! I have extensive experience creating levels for Duke 3d, I know how to use all of the "sector effector" tags n' such. I know many of you do as well, like Majik Monkey and others.

GROUP PROJECT!!

Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself, but this is some really refreshing news. I think this community could deliver the game they were planning on making, if y'all are motivated! Who's in?

I'd love to help you guys out too, but unfortunately I'm not very skilled with the Build engine. Only thing I ever made was was a few crappy Witchaven 2 maps... lol Oh, and I also got a reply from Les...

"Ok. Let me just stress once more that this was a tech prototype. The goal was merely to test some of our ideas. The game levels are named as ABLEVxx.MAP (where xx is a number). The floor plans for these levels are in place but they are not textured or populated. All of the other maps are test maps we built as we added new features to the game executable."

Heck, that's better than nothing... all we had before was a name... Cheesy Grin

Hey thats some cool sh*t ya got their, if a group of you do decide to continue on this work, i'd be glad to help with drawing a few sprites and what not. Could even learn a bit more about mapping for the build engines which is something i have on my todo list.

Also "Hurry up and update your site" its agrivating me because theirs nowt new onnit and its a kick ass site it really is.

Hey, there is only so much you can do for a Corridor 7 site... Isn't the fully functional source code for Corridor 8: Galaxy Wars good enough an update? BTW, thanks for the compliment, I'm glad to see people still putting use into the site and enjoying it. It's also cool to see over 2400 hits on the site. I'm so proud... Cheesy Grin

So when should we expect it to happen? Has he sent you the files yet? I'm anxious to see the source and what they did with it (as I'm sure most others are as well). Anyhow... those are the questions that I have....

Wait...wait, did I just hear Duke 3d? Build engine? Is it possible that the game Fate has any relationship to corridor 8? That rhymed btw. And I love the build engine. I've made maps but I've never released any, still the Build engine is hot.

This is gunna be so cool its well exciting when old forgotten games are bought back, its so interesting.

@ Mishran, Yeh that corridor 8 source code will be legendary. I wander what features it has. It would be cool to do the gore similar to blood and then the cameras like in duke. Somebody should really set up some sort of forum comunity for this game perhaps a new area on this forum would be cool

Found an old announcement from 1996 about Corridor 8 but it's mainly the same things that is mentioned in the quoted email of the original post.

I didn't even know they were planning a "Corridor 8" Smile
It's excellent you've made contact with the developers of such games. Would they by any chance have the source code for Corridor 7 itself? This is an enhanced Wolf 3D engine after all. And, although I know this is unlikely, do they know of the whereabouts of any of the people that were a part of JaM (the mob that made Blake Stone?) If the source for any of these games were made available, it'd open up a whole new interesting world for the Wolf community.

Les made an attempt to locate the C7 source code before, but was unable to find it. I guess he probably will continue to look for it, but it may take time. Maybe I should ask him to do a chat with us in the chat room sometime so everyone can ask him their questions in person. Wink

Hey people. I've got great news. Received the package today sent by Les and the prototype and source code for Corridor 8 is now available on my site. I played around with the prototype a bit and was quite impressed. Not much to be seen, but the built in level builder is sweet. I do like the shotgun sprite though. Wink I wish I had a way of making a pdf of the design docs for Corridor 8, it's 58 pages of reading goodness.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, I made a DOOM II level of the Corridor 7 floor 1 map. I was bored yesterday and decided to mess around. Figured I'd mention it in case anyone would be even remotely interested. It's on my site under the downloads page... very bottom.

It's not a Doom clone. The graphics were not made up for the game so they used Doom sprites as place holders. I did notice though that there was a few original sprites... the shotgun for example. I'm currently working on making the PDF version of the design docs and I'm about 2/3 done. It'll be finished and posted tomorrow. Unfortunately do to space limitations, the PDF won't be of the highest quality... and do to the number of pages and different subject matter, I'm splitting it into three files. You'll see why I did it soon enough... Here is the latest news from Les...

"I just want to make clear (again) that what you see is very early prototype work and that the end result should not be judged by what you see. I hope the community wasn't expecting more than what I sent - I certainly didn't want to mislead anyone into thinking they were getting an actual mission-playable version of Corridor 8. Now, with that said, I sent along the design doc so that maybe someone out there can make Corridor 8, as it was designed, a reality. Maybe with the code I sent along it would make things easier...

I'm still not done looking for the C7 code but I have so much stuff in my junk closet to sift through, it'll take some time to find if I even have it.

Of course if I come across any other cool Capstone stuff I'll send it your way."

I just attempted downloading the file and had no problem. Even tested the zip structure and everything was fine.

I downloaded it to a friend's computer (I wasn't at home, but was desperate to check it out). He's running XP, and Wolf can run fine of his PC, but the test game doesn't want to load up. It hangs after the first few seconds of loading. Any solutions? Memeory settings? Use Dosbox???
