@Adam Biser: You might missed 5 other windows which they are not bootable, only run from DOS.

Windows 1.0 = First Version
Windows 2.0 = Version 2.0
Windows 3.0 = Version 3.0
Windows 3.1 = Version 3.1
Windows 3.11 = Viersion 3.11 (Windows for Workgroups)

See History of Windows for more information about Versions of Windows (Windows 3.2 is included in somewhere on this website)

??

I know, I was only going from Win95, as Tricob had done... I think the WIN16 versions are pretty easy to follow. Very Happy

If I'm not mistaken, Windows 1.00 was supposed to run on an old PC XT, which had an 8-bit processor. So that version would be classified as an 8-bit program.

Says 16-bit, but does link to a video of it being used on an XT.

Oh, yeah ... that's right. The 8-bit mode was optional or something. Thanks for the correction. Smile

I am not trying to give any cheepos any ideas but about 1 year or so ago i was going thru Mr. Lowe's wolf dome looking at all the TC's and slightly different mods, something i noticed is the people who made a slight change to the game only affected maybe 1 file for example gamemaps.wl6 and then another slight mod would only have changed the vswap.wl6 so what could be going on is, is that people are downloading enough of these TC's and mods that they can recombine the files that were native wolf3d orginial. I personally never did this but once looked into it and said to myself "dang, ppl can get this free this way!" I am not sure if this has ever been addressed as a problem but, just thought i would bring to the attention of MOD and TC creators before they go throwing files out onto the internet.

Yeah it's easy to do. I did it when I first joined the forum with only 2 mods that had no coding changes and only one of the episodes each remapped but came with the other 5 not changed.

hah back when i discovered Wolf3D there were places on the net that let you download it free.

It literally might as well be freeware.
I bought RTCW and i wanted to buy Doom3 (unfortunately by the time Doom3 was finally released i didn't care at all about it)
i am also gonna get Quake 4 but thing is, because it's a used copy, the money i spend does NOT goto ID Software.
so whether i pirate it or not, no money goes to ID.

The Only reason i support buying games amongst pirating, is to balance, game developers that make a good game you enjoy DESERVE your money.

I have allways pirated my copies of Wolf3D if i got the chance i would buy it on CD, but anything that has to do with ONLINE STORE ONLINE STORE XBL ARCADE TODAY!
forget it,
the funny thing is, it's pretty easy to obtain your own copy of Wolf3D without going to the pirate sites, if theres a wolf3d addon with new graphics but no new levels, you download it, and find a wolf3D game with no new graphics but just new levels.
and then you simply compile the original VSWAP and original GAMEMAPS together for example, and you will have used addons to create a free copy of the original wolfenstein.
Kinda puts a damper of insisting people buy the original copy when rampant modding and TC games are being made.

In some countries you are left with no choice but to download it or make you own version (as discussed above). For example - Wolfenstein 3D hasn't been sold in retail stores in Australia for nearly a decade, to my understanding Sad

Harvey Norman in Kalgoolie had a copy listed in their catalogue back in 2002

The real outrage is that System Shock games are no longer available except to piraters.

Honestly i don't feel bad about pirating Wolf3D it's very old and not many people who play their Xbox tree sixties and Playstation 3's during their spare time are going to care for it.
but then again it beeing freeware isn't a bad idea, it's what started the trend of FPS games, and ID should probably look at just allowing sharing of the full game with their blessings.
it would probably generate more money for them in the long run.

This game started FPS!
ho made it?
ID software!
Does ID still make games?
they do.
Whoah they made Wolfenstein 2009? I'm going to get it!

Actually, Wolf3D did not start the perspective first person shooter genre...
It all started in 1974 with Maze War, almost 20 years before wolf was born.

Hrmm... well, this is what Wikipedia has to say about it:

Quote:
The first person shooter has since been traced as far back as Maze War, development of which began in 1973, and 1974's Spasim. 1987's MIDI Maze for the Atari ST was one of the first network multiplayer action games and also saw release on game consoles. The genre coalesced with 1992's Wolfenstein 3D, which is generally credited with creating the genre proper and the basic archetype upon which subsequent titles were based.

As can be found in bitshifter's link. I guess FPS perspective != FPS genre... or something like that. Rolling Eyes 2

Hooray for categorizations. I say Pluto is still a planet!

Maze Screensaver? Post a link. Or are you referring to the game?

Also worth noting about Maze Wars:

Wikipedia wrote:
Players wander around a maze, being capable of moving backward or forwards, and turning right or left, and peeking through doorways. Other players are seen as eyeballs. When a player sees another player, they can shoot them. Players gain points for shooting other players, and lose them for being shot. Occasionally in some versions, a duck also appears in the passage.

So I guess it is a "shooter", and it's in "first person". FPS... right?
If you need to see your weapon in front of you at all times, then technically Ken's Labyrinth isn't an FPS either.

Cool. I found a video of it, if anyone else was curious:

Maze War: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7chDIySXK2Q

Some of the related videos are kind of neat too... I've always found older computers and their evolution interesting.
My family's first computer was a Commodore 64 (and we had over 500 games for it). I found The Eidolon very boring; lol.

there's you go.......

I already have adventure games for both Windows and DOS plus Atari Flashback and original Atari 2600 system with more than 25 games.

1) Original Adventure 2600 for Atari been released on 1979

2) Adventure: ReVisited for Windows released about 3 years ago

3) Adventure 2600 Reboot for Windows been released last April of 2009 (totally re-make of original)

4) Indenture for DOS been released in 1990's, the game has 5 levels which it has more features (extra dragon, another key, extra magic dots) to access more rooms. (I already know where these rooms been expanded somewhere..) - BEWARE: this game requires DOSbox to run this if you using Windows XP, Vista, or 7.

Each link above have downloadable, especially Atari 2600 on Wiki

I do like overhead games, i am so curious to try Wolf3D with it.
and if you look at the startup screen for Chaosedit it has an above camera view on the dungeon of the first Wolf3D level,
that's what i am talking about. not an overhead map.

I now understand what you mean, but something like that is going to contain tons of code changes, which would probably ultimate end up meaning rewriting the Raycasting code...but by all means if you want to attempt something like that with the wolf code, I'm sure we'd all love to see a feature like that...

Hmm i am not sure.. it might not need to rewrite the code, but there would be a needed code to texture the tops of the walls otherwise you would see grey.

think Doom for example, it has a camera, and the view does not need to be able to only view straight ahead and can even rise or lower along with panning left and right.

people have made mods for Doom which allow free look aiming like with Duke and Shadow warrior,
the camera could easily be programmed to look from above and down on the player, that would definitely work fine.

the only real problem is making sure your sprites do not look like paper cardboard cutouts that have been pushed flat.

Sprites for guards would have to be redrawn so that you are viewing them from the top of their head.
but it might not be necessary unless it was a real birds eye view.

You don't understand, IT WILL REQUIRE CODE CHANGES!!!!!!

Wolfenstein 3D code works on Raycasting, if you don't understand by what I mean then check this out, it's an example of altering the Wolfenstein raycasting engine to allow transparent doors and walls!!!!

Surely you should now understand it's not as simple as you think!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Games like Duke3D and Shadow Warrior runs a completely different engine, which almost allows for a full 360 degree view of the players world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Doom is based on Wolf3D's engine it uses raycasting and projects flat surfaces on a single 2D plane,
or so it's described, but source ports have free aiming and looking around.

i know how raycasting works its based upon drawing a sprite in a 2D enviroment, and is programmed to change the perspective as the player actor gets closer, it's really hard to explain because it's a very simplified version of say the build engine.

Actually, fragstein, that's wrong. Both the Doom engine and the Build engine are isometric engines. To have the camera viewing down on the player would require a full 3D engine. Code changes are a very large understatement. Very Happy

Fragstein3D the alpha version of doom's engine had some of Wolfenstein's engine, in fact ROTT has a lot of Wolfenstein's engine, but with vast amount of changes (hence the inability to look up and down)...

15 bucks? get oughtta here! that's teriffic, and it doesn't require Steamy feces, it's a shame it's not an actual hard copy though,
I think iD should still sell hard copy's because hard copy's are like collectors items.
