I bet you have the music turned off and just forgot. If you're really lazy and don't want to go through the sound menu to change this, you can always just delete the configuration file. Yawn

Thomas,

Have you tried using DOSBox at all? In my mind it renders VDMSound totally obselete - smooth movement (provided you have a fast enough processor... shouldn't be too hard), sounds that play at different volume levels depending on how close or far away an enemy or door etc is, and quite long loading times. Cool

DosBox runs crappy on my computer, choppy and static filled sounds, although its probably because of my configuration, but I like VDMSound, no fuss, just right click and you're set.

One thing I dislike about VDMSound is the way that BJ's movement through the levels is very jerky. Try walking down a long corridor and keep your eyes fixed on the walls either side of you - they don't smoothly scroll by. Perhaps this is difficult to comprehend if you are used to playing the game this way without DOSBox. The movement is similarly unsmooth when launched straight from Windows.

Another plus point to DOSBox is D-Fend. This enables you to configure each and every DOS game you wish to play using its interface and then it SAVES THOSE SETTINGS. No more fiddling around with cycles and core speed etc - just double-click the game and off you go!

To be honest, I don't notice any "lag" in wolfenstein with VDM unless i'm used to it Wink
I'll give DosBox another try I guess. In DosBox I get that jerky movement too.

Hmm... it seems strange that DOSBox should produce jerky movement, Kyle. Did you try increasing the game's cycle rate using CTRL + F12 when you last used the program?

Yeah the best (if I can remember right that is) was around 11,000 cycles, but it still was choppy. I'm going to try it again. Smile

EDIT: I just tried it again, it sucks Razz The best CPU I got was about 12,000 and it still was choppy, to give you an idea of how slow it is, it takes 15 secs for bj's face to turn (statusbar).

sentenced, can I take a look at yor conf file? Even if our systems aren't exactly the same, I can still try it.

Sure, here's my current configuration for Wolf3D.

I was surprised at the jerkiness report due to having tried it out on the school computers. I figured that if the game ran smoothly on those (which it did, albeit very slowly) then it would on any system. Shrug

The main details are that the cycle speed resides at 15592, and the core is normal. To be honest with you, I know nothing about the technical side of DOSBox, but if adjusting your cycles around this level does no good then try fiddling around with the core speed a bit. I use "dynamic" for the Blake Stone games due to the fact that the speed of both was disappointing, even with max cycles before slowdown. It works a treat! Cool

The best I could get it was at around 35,000 Cycles with Core set to dynamic. Razz
Although I noticed something too. I'm using flamer46's code for weapon changing + reloading (the bob thing) and it goes really slow. But the game did run *somewhat* smoothly.

Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

Ah... obnoxious smilies rule!

It's cool that there is at least some improvement in the speed of DOSBox since you last tried. Many addons I have played lately don't perform all too well with DOSBox due to their hefty code changes. I prefer the the earlier "new maps, same atmosphere" titles, so it works out well.

Try running normal Wolf/Spear with it. Seemingly subtle changes (well obviously not in the visual department) like weapon bobbing could potentially make a whole lot of difference in the speed region.

Did you notice the sounds feature I mentioned earlier? I have seen a few Apogee catalogs that were included with the shareweare releases of early games that list the environmental audio technology as one of the game's features. Playing through Episode 2 is AMAZING when you can just about hear gunshots from the mutants in the distance...

Take it easy, man! I wasn't being serious about the "lazy" part. It was just there to keep the post from being too boring a read for the casual user. Really. Cool

Yeah I remember when I had my old Win98 (we still have it Wink) how the sounds would get softer the farther away you were from the origin of it (PlaySoundLocActor,PlaySoundLocTile) but when I first got VDMSound, I noticed that was gone Crying 2. Sometimes it's really annoying on certain sounds (ie. door open/close on outdoor levels) but I live with it Wink

I think my EXE currently it filled up with a lot of new features that really kill it's performance (Outside Atmo, Multiple Ceiling/Floor, Directional Sprites, Shading Razz) and what also probably slows down the game are all those if statesments in my PlayLoop, I have one for the Missile launcher Delay (EoD), gun change bob, spear funny face, i can't remember the rest Razz
But those statements are called very very often :\

I got the best performance from DOS Box doing the following:

Fullscreen mode
No-stretch graphics
640x480 resolution
Graphics drawn on the surface
