How about Duke Nukem itself? The first one is editable! You can not only edit the levels, but the sprites as well. Another good one is Commander Keen, both of which I've messed with.

Anyway, good luck with that, it ought to be interesting.

I think Sporb had in mind something with some Adlib and SB sound. My recommendation would be Duke Nukem II.

There's a Nukem II map editor out there, but I forget where. I think it was at SourceForge or something, but it's possibly at a Duke Nukem fansite instead. Think

For modification of the music, you'll need to convert the files into IMF format, then have them placed in the NUKEM2.CMP file.

IIRC, the game uses AU files for SB sounds. You can use WinLAME to do the necessary conversion there.

There's a multi-game editor that will export/import graphics, sound effects, and music for the game. I had this one until my harddisk was wiped out, so I'll have to find its name once more. IIRC, it also worked for Dark Ages, Alien Carnage, Mystic Towers, and Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure.

I really dont want to be tied into midi music and 256colour images - im gonna look for a development kit that might do the trick. I wanna make a 2D dead reckoning game cause i't be so much more stylish and fun than wolf could be.

Well The Games Factory might be what your looking for. It was up on www.the-underdogs.org but last time I checked they were down, their IP works though.

Also you could use the Zelda Classic engine if you wanted to make a Zelda type game: www.zeldaclassic.com

another option is to do rom hacking, but that would probably take more time then finding an engine to do this in.

The game "Beats of Rage" is a fully editable beatem up game engine. Do a google search. For a fighting game engine you can try Mugen, (Once again google it).

Also if you want to do some programming try Game Maker. It has a basis in C. Here's a link to an Engine to start with: http://forums.gamemaker.nl/lofiversion/index.php/t138169.html

http://www.allegro.cc/depot/Marduk/ This mentions a platformer engine

If you want to do an RPG look around for RPG2K.

Anyway as for the Duke Nukem 2 art editor, I've looked all over for one that works, where is that?

The one I found was at a Duke Nukem fansite of some sort. I didn't test the art editor part out, but from what I viewed of it, it shows the available images, then let lets you export them to picture files. I'm not 100% if you can import picture files back to the CMP file, though.
