I've been working on this project again and I'm getting a lot more done on it than I did before.
http://winwolf3d.dugtrio17.com/wiki/WinWolf3D_Development_History
I still have a lot of stuff to do: http://winwolf3d.dugtrio17.com/wiki/WinWolf3D_ToDo_List

It is written in Visual Basic 6 and uses DirectX 8. It's based upon the original Wolf3D/SOD source except for the raycasting and rendering. Right now Wolf3D v1.4 and SOD are completely supported and controlled by a scripting language. This script is explained in detail here.

It's currently still being testing internally, but if you want, you can check out these screenshots: (excuse their jpg'edness).

Love what you did with the raycaster, dude. Cool Any chance you'll remake Orb Of Dilaaria with this engine when you finish with WinWolf3D? It'd be an extremely cool experience to run the game in the higher resolution. Not to mention you could run the game with all the sound in operating systems other than Windows XP and Windows 2000.

Thanks. I do plan to make add as much stuff as possible to the scripting language, so hopefully I can get it all in there, yeah.

Concerning the scripting language, I'm wondering if it would be able to call up an external file as it will in the TC I'm making.

Here's how the routine works. The EXE will call a routine when the "Basket" item (a.k.a. "Empty dog food bin") is picked up. That routine opens a text file called HINT-EPx.KBJ where the "x" part is whatever the current episode is. The code then displays a message in a window. Whatever text is displayed in this window depends on the Floor Code that the Basket is picked up in. If you pick the item up when it is on Floor Code 6A (a.k.a. the "Deaf Guard" floor code), it will display the first line of text from the HINT-EPx.KBJ file. If the floor code is 6B (for the "Secret Elevator"), it will display the second line of text in the HINT file. And so on.

Would WinWolf3D's scripting language be able to call up files and use them in this way?

That could be added inside the script itself. It wouldn't be too hard to add. There wouldn't be a need for the external files.

One last question - I'm wanting ambient sound effects, and six types of treasure instead of four. Could the script apply these two features as well?

Ambient sounds: plan on it
Treasures: yep, you define your own treasure types in script, same with food types, etc. even weapons have no limit except for the limit in number keys (0-9).

Hm. It'll probably be less trouble for me to do my TC if I simply have it run in WinWolf3D using the scripting language you've done. Smile

If there's anything I can do to help you out with finishing up WinWolf3D, please let me know. It's only fair for me to help you out here, since you'll be saving me a lot of time and work on my TC when you finish and upload your release. Cool

Well, I'm not sure how soon it'll be before it'll be at the level you're hoping for. Right now it can pretty much handle Wolf3D and SOD plus any very similar variations. About the only "extra" coding I've done is animated objects. Right now there's still no release timeline, but as you can see, work is being done, and that's better than what was going on a month ago. Smile

Ah, good to see the dirt knocked off this project! If the scripting language is complicated enough, I might be tempted to make a "mini Switch Seventeen" for it (though I've gotta get the other one done first).

Can't wait to see the next public release. Thumbs Up

Yeah, it's nice to get some work done on it again.

Some more tidbits (from Catacomb 3D):
Catacomb 3D Menu
Catacomb 3D Map 1

It'll be awhile before the EGA games get full support.

Sorry, I have one more question about the script I didn't remember before. I plan to have my TC replace food with an "empty plate" image when you pick it up, and the bowl of dog food with "Empty bin" (a.k.a. "Basket"), when you get that. Will the script allow me to do this?

No problem. Well, the script could do that if I add that functionality, yes. Right now I'm working on getting the basics down, then I can add some more of the other stuff.

Anyone familiar with the Catacomb games? I'm needing some help getting correct values for hitpoints, guard speed, etc.
Thanks

I never got the full version of Catacomb, but I'll help you out in whatever way I can.

You've probably already noticed this, but I can say right off the bat that the "pain sprite" routine in Catacomb allows the enemy to move towards you whether or not you've shot him, and making a successful hit on him prevents him from attacking you for a much longer duration than the Wolfenstein 3-D game. I don't recall seeing a script command related to implementing such a feature. Have I missed a command somewhere? Shrug

I'll have to check that out. I'm having to write a bunch of special code for the EGA games.

I've also been working on Catacomb Abyss for a moment.

I've posted a public beta for WinWolf3D at my site.

Feel free to ask questions, make comments, or mention bugs in this thread. I hope it works out for everyone. It does have bugs and probably needs a little lovin' to get it running on some systems.

Wolf3D/SOD - should both be playable.
Catacomb 3D - should be semi-playable, but no sounds, and guards are basically all the same.
CatAbyss - no guards, sounds, you can move around the level though, and some features do work.
Blake Stone 1 - needs a lot of work.

Thanks for working so hard to get this out to us all. I - as well as many others - have been eager to check out your newest updates of the program, and I'll really enjoy checking the program out. Smile

I'm downloading the thing tonight, and I'll do a major lookover of the Blake Stone mode this weekend to see what features I might be able to help you with. I remember that many parts of the game *seemed* to be run by the same parts of the code, although it wasn't immediately obvious. One of the dead giveaways of this was the 32-bit exclusive code that was put in higher versions of the game's code. I say this because versions higher than 1.0 will run on a 80286, but the Help section and actual game won't. The game was fully functional on a 80286 in V1.0, though.

Great news Adam!! I just downloaded winwolf3d and tried to run it with 1.4 wolf3d game files, and it gave an error about an array not being correct or something like that. Just to let you know. Otherwise, the screen menu is awesome!!

That error was only appearing in the EXE version. An update fixing the problem has been uploaded. It actually runs, I tested the EXE.

OK, and you're using the v1.4 VGAGRAPH? everything else looks ok? What happens immediately before the error? A door opens? A sound should play (ie: gun fires)? More info, man! Laughing

Yes, Im using 1.4 vgagraph. I have full registered wolf3d, so I think I would have 1.4 vgagraph. The controls dont change when I select new keys. Well, maybe it was an error on my side. I assigned both turn left/right and strafe left/right to the a and d keys, and I believe that's what caused the error. I moved with the mouse, saw the guard, I fired one time, the guard fired, and then runtime error.
