I think I just give them away (or throw them out of the window if no one
wants to take them), since I noticed that the more money you own,
the more problematic your life is.

For more options listen to the song by 'BareNaked Ladies' - If I had a million dollars.

It's got many more options and possibilities. Then again, some of the lyrics are Canadian based... but then again, why not, as it's a Canadian group...

It is always good to invest money, then interest grows, but I actually would like to get a few new things. (Car, computer, TV, stereo, etc)

Pretty much just live off of it. As life progresses and I grow more adventurous (or greedy), I may choose to invest some interest in real estate or stocks.

If I had a million dollars... hmm...

I think I'd invest in blue chips or something similar, as you could get a minimum of 10% return on it. Maybe an annuity... So... that would give you at least 100k a year, for life. With that... hmm... I'd buy a house.. a new car and probably a few trips. I'd also make sure that the people who helped me during my trying times (these last 2+ years) were looked after.

In all honesty.. It's a tough question for me really. I have to wait and see what the final results are from the doctors - the specialists - and what the lawyer does, as the lawsuit is still pending against the guy who hit me. In the end the lawyer gets 15%, because I have no money to pay for his services, so he works on contingency. But, I can say that I'd rather be pain free and able to walk properly than rich (if you get my meaning). It's hard to speculate on the "might be's" and you don't really know what you'd do until you have it.

I do know that statistically, most people that win the lottery are usually broke within 5 years. I watched a show recently where they looked at a few lottery winners - like the where are they now type of thing. Most where in worse shape than before they won the money. One guy in specific bought cars and large screen TV's for all of his friends and then when the money dried up... The friends disappeared. He was left pennyless and almost homeless.

That much money, while helpful, can be a double edged evil really.

I would buy a residence in an ecovillage located in Northern England. Others could rent the premises and live there, paying me in the meantime. Remaining funds would be spent on improving the ecovillage site and maintaining its sustainability while I go about my usual business in a typical day job. During this time I would still be living where I am now

When I retire, I take my residence off the market and live there for the rest of my days.

After I replaced everything that needed to be replaced - my clothes and computer included - the million would probably be cut in half. Sad The rest of the money would be to simply get what other folks out there have - car, coffee table, fold-up chairs, and so on. I guess I could start up a band like I've always wanted to. Smile

This sounds a little hard to believe. I'm sorry I don't doubt that you read it somewhere but from I know it's certainly not that way in Australia. I know a lot of people blow a good deal of it on stuff but completely broke?

Quote:

Rubbish! There's no way in the world you'd just leave it there. Seriously, there's just no way you wouldn't be tempted to spend at least 40%-50% of it within the first year.

Quote:

In Australia it's illegal to donate kids to charity.

Anyway unless you've got money it's hard to really say what you'd do. The money changes people, when it's sitting in the bank it's tempting to go and spend it, why do you think a lot of 'instant' millionaires blow a lot or even all of their money? Because they haven't put in the hard work to earn it plus they see this large amount of cash sitting there and they just can't help themselves spending it.

When you've earnt the money or sold stocks/property or whatever else to get it you made it yourself, people then seem to have more respect for it. When people win it or inherit it they seem to treat it like 'found' money that they can go and blow on anything and everything their heart desires. How do you think self-made millionaires got that way? not by living extravegantly, that comes after when they have made a LOT of money and they still don't go crazy they just buy more expensive things than they used to, a $100,000 car instead of a $50,000 car etc.

To be honest with you a $1,000,000 isn't really all that much money these days. You all may scoff, but you'd be very surprised.....

Actually Yes, Dean...

Strangely enough, statistically most lottery winners are broke within 5 years. I didn't believe it when I first heard it either, but they did this entire show on it. Here, we have many lotteries including 6-49 and something they call Super-7. Those two lotteries alone can create 3 millionaires each week (the 6-49 draws twice a week - starts at a million when someone wins - and then climbs if there is no winner until there is one) and the same with the Super-7, but it's only a weekly thing. And from what I understand, the states have those and more. I don't know how much of the world they included in the stats, but for the most part, I can believe it.

As to $1M not being much... Yes, you are right if you start spending, buying trips and such... The best option is truely to go to something like investing in BlueChips or an Annuity. Both can generate at least 10% a year return on your investment. Now... 100K per year for the rest of your life isn't something to scoff at really. And then you still have the full million. Invested wisely, the money will do more for you than spending it will. About the only other thing you could invest in is buying and selling of properties, but even that can be tricky and costly. Even if I tried something like that, I'd still do the investing first and then use the interest or returns to then buy real-estate. That way you are making money both ways.

Here in Canada, if you buy and flip properties, you have to pay capital gains taxes if you make money on the deal, but they do have 1 loophole to that as well. If you live in the property (for a specified time) and then flip it, you can avoid the capital gains tax.

But yeah... I can see how statistically 1M could be gone in no time - especially when you start doing things like buying new cars - new home... new toys... doing things for friends and family... and trips and such. It would be easy to blow it in a matter of a year or two... and become part of the statistics...

We have similar things here but it's only over a 12 month period. As long as you keep it 1 year you dont pay anything on how much profit you make. There are other ways to gain benefits and things on investment properties by negative gearing one off against the other and things like that. It can be done quite successfully if you know how and you know what to look for in houses that you can make money on without spending too much on to improve.

Interesting that you have a similar law/requirement. I noticed though that you said "As long as you keep it 1 year"... So you don't have to live in it, just keep it? Ours is that you must actually reside in the premisses.

Alright, after much thought I have come to the conclusion that every way to use the million bucks in a way that uses it wisely is boring. If I had to blow it all as quickly as possible (like in that one awesome movie with Richard Pryor), then I would...
-Score a few more pairs of these awesome pants I have. They're cargo pants, I think, and they unzip at the knees to transform into shorts. They have lots of pockets, but that's not my favorite part about them. See, they have these little things at the side starting at about the lower thigh (little bands? tassels? whatever they'd be called), and when I walk they swing regally. I always kick ass in those pants, and if I get enough for every day of the week then... I'd probably get sick of them. So just two or three more pairs would suffice.
-Get a saxophone. My dad's going to buy me one (or he says he is if I promise to take lessons), but he sure is taking his time so I'll just go all out and buy the most expensive one I can find. Hell, maybe a couple.
-Get a violin and a few guitars while I'm at it. I want to learn to play the violin, too, and maybe some day I'll jump on the guitar bandwagon. They look cool as decoration anyway.
-Hook myself up with some complicated security gadgets, because I'm a paranoid kind of guy, and I always come back to my place on Sundays with my fingers crossed that nobody broke in over the weekend and stole my stuff.
-Get a nice handgun and take some safety lessons. This could spark a heated debate, I guess, but let's try to avoid it and focus on the issue of "COOL I HAVE ALL THIS MONEY".
-Upgrade the hell out of my computer, and maybe buy a few spare systems. I've always wanted to have a setup that uses four computers, those being my main one (XP, gaming system), a Mac (they look pretty and are nice to have, plus I wanna play the Mac version of Wolf3D), a Linux machine (what variety of Linux, nobody knows; there's too damn many of them), and a Windows 98 computer with a hardware setup that allows it to play old games and have some of the nicer things that newer computers have (maybe multiple hard drives to make up for the size limit on 98 computers, and definitely as fast of a processor as I can get without ruining it).
-Get all the old games and systems that I either lost or had damaged in random moving/recklessness. I'm one step there already, as I just snagged Dragon Force for the Saturn, and in mint condition no less!
-Uh... hire people to do stuff I want done. Not just stupid stuff ("You there! Cover that table with dust and then dust it!"), but artistic stuff that I am incapable of doing well. I want myself and all of my characters drawn in some epic, high resolution style, and with multiple poses. I also want some artwork done for some Switch Seventeen stuff, mainly BJ in action with the various weaponsets. 3D models of some random stuff would be useful, too.
-Get some random writing published, probably something stupid (in the vein of "Get Pissed"). This is on such a list because it'd probably take a lot of money to get through the whole publishing process, or at least to get through it smoothly.
-Throw the rest away on stupid trinkets I want. I want Wicked Lasers! I want more magic tricks! (no link, a magician never reveals his secrets) I want a Vespa! I want flowers delivered to this whole list of people! I want all kinds of nifty cooking gadgets! I want the Big Book of Jerkcity! I want LifeAlert! Just for the hell of it!

That list was kind of selfish, but if I wasn't selfish then most of it would be boring. All this talk about stuff being "boring" isn't to say that this discussion about the responsible uses of the money hasn't been interesting, though, especially the real estate stuff. I plan on trying out such streams of passive income in a few years, and a discussion on the matter is always intriguing.

I would buy as much cutting edge hardware i could get, for under $20K, maybe the psp or the dslite I've been wanting to buy, and they put the remaining funds into a bank account. It's good to know that you have money in the bank.
