I would love to do a fun mod at some point as well, Castle Hasselhoff was fun and great. That combination makes it stand out even more. Smile

I've been tempted to do a "fun" mod more than once in a while... But I just can't put it into place.

Same here. I had been thinking of doing a 'music' mod - like The Beatles on an LSD trip or Madonna adopting children instead of shooting Nazi's or something. Laughing But I either needed graphics for it or after a while I would think the whole idea was lame. Razz

Hey Dean, so why was there no new post this wednesday? Was there some announcement about you not being able to write it on time, that I managed to miss? Sorry for being impatient, but I'm a regular reader and just can't wait for an update!

There was, I haven't missed a Wednesday all year Smile

They aren't always mod reviews or one of the other specials, when a mod that i or someone else involved in the blog have worked on gets released, i post a "Released" post, like I did last week.

I actually post on Wednesday mornings Australian time so thats usually Tuesday night US time, if that helps Smile

Well, this is strange. When I go to your blog (using this address: http://deans-wolf-blog.blogspot.com/ ), the newest post I see is "Released: Operation: Mutant Strike 3" dated October 27. So what about the Wednesday post on November 2? Smile

Edit: maybe that October 27 post was meant for November 2 and accidentally got posted too early? If so, no wonder I was confused...

Ahhhh, I see now, It's showing as the time and date that I wrote it, I forgot to change it to the release date!

Thanks for picking this up, you'll see that this had a time of less than 24 hours after the previous post although it didn't appear until Wednesday last week. I usually write the posts days and sometimes weeks in advance so thats how the dates get screwed up, if i forget to correct them to the release dates.

All fixed now, thanks again Smile

Good review. I have to be honest, I never understood Harry Mass Sr. I always refer to his mods as "poor man's John Bucksnort". Laughing

All BS aside, I did quite enjoy "Berlin Express" when I played it, ages ago. I say those mods are great for newcomers.

I do agree with you Thomas, he's done a lot of work over the years and his mods do have a distinctive style so wanted to try to highlight that to the people that read the blog that theres a lot more out there than the mods that everyone speaks about.

I do agree that Berlin Express was his best mod, Maybe I'll review that one day! Smile

I know I haven't been posting here each week to tell y'all about each and every new blog post, but just a reminder that there's a new post up each and every Wednesday and the odd one from some other members of the Wolf Community also.

I just wanted to thank everyone for reading as well, The blog has had nearly 20,000 hits in the last year!

LOL "Snabbs"... And yes, it is criminal to release a mod with either blocked treasure or missing keys. But we've all been there... At least those of us who started young. Good review though. I might give this crappy mod a try... It sure looks way better than the crappy mod you reviewed last time! ???

The degrees of suckiness vary. Is it the worst mod of all time because it cannot be completed, because the graphics are ugly, the maps are haphazardly done and look awful, or is it a combination of them all? I have no idea. The earliest Kyo Kusanagi-modifications were pretty bad in terms of design and overall flow, but they still had valid coding to a degree as well as being able to play.

My candidate would happen to be "Pukenstein" because of bad taste. Ryan Steinbruner, the guy who did it, did another piece of junk entitled "Raw Meat"; but even that had something about it. I don't know... I suppose there are many random map sets and graphic packs that are very sub-standard too, such as "Operation Gtyuu", "Cuetips Revenge" and "Day of the Chaingun". But Deano the Beano already reviewed the latter...

I think a very bad mod should do the complete opposite of a very good mod - you want to continue the mod to see how low the lows are, what new depths it achieves. Laughing Pukenstein sounds like an example of it, the GTA mod is an example of it as well. I do think it should be playable, but it being uncompletable also kinda adds to the suckiness - you'll never know the terribleness that lies ahead. Mr Green

If I had any religious beliefs to boot, I'd say the devil created Creator maps. Those annoying, trivial robo-maps pollute practically every mod some guy named Patrick Gray released, and they're horrible. The only good thing he did was "Hitler's Maze of Death". 1 level, huge, fun stuff. But Creator maps... Some guy ripped off Coming of the Storm, used the crap-tool that is "Creator" (which has nothing to do with "creating" or using your mind, just clicking a [Censored] button - I'm sorry! It's just silly!) ??? ... And deemed it "WilWolf". Dean, if you're ever going to review a mod with Creator-maps, all 60 maps, I'll take my hat off for you. That task demands heart and manhood!

You guys both make some very good points here!

It's like I say in the reviews, I at least give points for effort but I'll also certainly point out laziness and just complete disregard for your own work. I absolutely despise Creator maps also, thats just the height of laziness, I've even seen mods where they were used and then manually modified, to me this is still being lazy, you are still just working on a base of what ws randomly created and not your own structure for the level.

Don't worry, there's plenty more crappy reviews to come! They are sometimes more fun than the serious ones! Very Happy

IF anyone has any suggestions then please post them here and I'll see what i can do, time permitting of course!

Don't know if they're Creator maps or not, but the worst mod I ever played was called something like "Killer Of Ignas". It took one song and beat it to death in the menus, the title screen, the in-game levels ... everything. The enemies moved around like paper cut-outs, the digitized dialog was impossible to make out no matter how many times you heard it, and all the maps were extremely boring and completely unimaginative.

The exit elevator was immediately accessible at the start of every level. The author said he did this so you could see whatever level in the game you wanted to without cheating. But IMO, it robbed the game of all suspense and mystery.

Edit: My mistake - it was called Destroyers Of Ignas.

DOI was made by the same guy who made The Best Mod in the World - equally crappy, trying to be funny, but it seems to be way too personal and therefore not funny on the large scale. Same goes for the Davestein-series.

You're more than welcome to review some of my first mods, Dean. They suffered from the same beginner-fluff too. But if you want medium-range crap, try "Wolfenken" or the "Dark Dungeon" series. Those were the first mods I ever played, and back then I thought they were fantastic, but looking back, they're quite average/poor, due to weird sounds and hijacked maps (a lot of them came from The Final Solution, Totengraeber and others). Some of the original maps were great though. And there was also a bug regarding a Hitler ghost.

What also makes good article material is "concept articles", such as "The Weirdest Wolf3D Mod Ever", "The Very First Wolf3D TC", and so on. I'm not going to suggest "The Most Controversial Wolf3D Mod", because while it might point to "Beyond Wolfenstein", it might instead be "SonderKommando Revolt", which one was never released publicly.

This whole discussion about badly done mods made me recall a particular mapset of highly dubious quality. I found it some ten years ago on a Polish site dedicated to Wolfenstein 3D, where it was called simply "WOLF3D2". No idea if it can be found on the Dome, but I doubt it. Also, there was no readme file inside. Since the aforementioned Polish site is now defunct, I have uploaded the mapset on Mediafire for everyone to enjoy!

http://www.mediafire.com/file/84aqncn2baz29wc/WOLF3D2.zip

Go ahead, take a look. The levels are... unique and delightfully abstract. Just don't let the first map mislead you, things get REALLY interesting later on!

Now tell me, is this old news, or have I unearthed something new and exciting? Smile

Oh boy, some of those maps look like memory dumps or levels 61 and beyond... Wolfenszajs for the win... Seriously though, some of these were just 64x64 open rooms with tons of sprites and guards - you know, this must have [Censored] up back then or something - only in SDL can you see so many sprites and do so many things without the EXE going nuts.

I have an older version of this (downloaded 30 December 2005) in my zips collection: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?gcbp4hi27an91i8

This one has a readme and howto text file. Could you translate them for us?

Maybe I should check it out again? Smile

Andy, the text files you posted appear to be site specific. The first one tells you where the file comes from, the second one says "to play the maps, copy them into the game folder and change their extensions depending on the game's version (e.g. .wl6)".

Now here's some detective work. The website in the readme you found doesn't really work, but it attempts to download a .zip file with the site's old contents. If you let it download, extract it, run index.html and navigate to "Plansze" in the menu, it's there as wolf3d2.zip. The description says "slightly modified maps". Not quite true. Smile But anyway, I had the idea to conduct a Google search using the filename "wolf3d2.zip". Sure enough, it's present in a few places, including a shovelware CD which also contains other Wolfenstein and Blake Stone goodies:

http://cd.textfiles.com/megagames2/MISC/APOGEE/

The CD is interesting enough, but more importantly, I found out that the mapset was included in Wolfmaster! This time, there's a slightly more informative readme file which says:

::: CODE :::
Wolfenstien 3d ~2~ is By Adam Chapman

Wolfenstein, the Wolfenstein logo and Wolfenstein Likeness are trademarks of
                         Id Software Inc.All rights Reseved.

So now we know the author's name! "Wolfenstein 3d ~2~" is game FF in Wolfmaster. And good news: Adam Chapman is also responsible for game II! This time, the readme says:

::: CODE :::
                          Wolfenstein 3d
                         Fear of Vengance
                                By
                        Adam Chapman 92-93

Wolfenstien 3d are tradmarks of Id software All rights reserved.

It's largely the same thing, but while Wolfenstein 3d ~2~ still had many original levels, in Fear of Vengance most of them are replaced with brand new randomness. There's even a floorcode profanity on E2L9.
