yes, I know it's C++, but alot of what I learned over months I found could be learned in minutes from this website's tutorials. Trust me; this is a great start. Wish I'd found it sooner.
Since it's C++, there may be some stuff in there that's C++ only, but for the most part you'll be able to recognize stuff from wolf3d. Give it a read; it's not complicated at all Wink

Thanks Dugtrio! Even though I've done a bit of coding it's nice to have it set down for you to follow...

thanks Cool

Hi All,

I've been reading books on coding in C++ and C# to try and expand my knowledge on programming. Along with this I've been looking for tutorials for C++ online, but only find ones that practically do it all and don't explain it, can anyone provide links to tutorials that do this?

Well keep in mind that what you need to be learning for Wolf is C and not C++. Yes, there is a difference Wink

Likely the stuff you need; a valuable resource.

Thanks so much! This is great! The quizzes are a nice touch too. I've been looking so hard for decent tutorials. Most assume you know C and skip that totally this one doesn't. Thanks again!

Hmm, well im already reading C++ for Dummies, so would you advise me to swap to this or not? Also another question, If Wolfenstein was Coded in C++ would it have more memory or would i have to change something within the code

Going to C++ would require some tweaks, I'm afraid.
Going to Objective C, however... it's an interesting concept, since you can supposedly take anything from C and compile it fine in Objective C. Also, the big thing about that tutorial link is that it gets the basics down for you; function setup, variable declaration, syntax, etc.

What is objective C, I admit that tutorial is good, but it is less advanced then my book, so i will probably read my book and then read that tutorial lol. What are the main differences between C and C++ (obviously C++ being newer and "better" in some sense)

You only get C, C++, and C#. C++ and is an improvement upon C, I'm not quite sure the difference between C++ and C#...but I guess it's probably another major improvement from C++...

And then you also get VB.net (Visual Basic), and Java...

C# and C++ are pretty different, compared to C and C++. C++ is basically just an extension on top of C. C# is kind of like Java and C++ have a child.
And there are a lot more languages than you just listed., Haasboy. I don't think there's a C+, or a C+++, or a C++++++++, though there very well could be. As far as programming wolf goes, the original is in C, and Wolf4SDL is C++. And I think someone's doing a Java port?

Adam is coding the Java port.

Anyway, I think we should focus on such programming languages, since they're simple yet powerful, and are the most "focused" nowadays. C++ is still VERY powerful, but is too verbose and tricky for many applications. Let it be used only for programs which need damn high performance or control over the memory, such as operating systems, low-level projects, realtime applications, highly complex games, scientific tools. Sometimes they're still coded in Assembly!!!

As for simple applications, you'd better learn a modern OO language, such as Java, C# (the best ones, C# IMHO the best ever), even Python (handy but with software engineering lacks) to name a few.

i remember assembly,
I was reading the intro to C++ but if i want to do wolf coding do i do C or C++?

I also know of other kinds of programming.
Naughty Dog has it's own proprietary code derived from a form of C++ it's called GOAL and LISP
3D gamestudio has C-script and a new kind called Delphi which they recommend everyone to switch to because apparently it's much more user friendly.

And uhh, Darkbasic has Darkscript i think, very very simple commands, often use words more than : / and {} kinds of extensions.

If people are interested, i can start a C and assembly language techniques thread?
Maybe start with some easy code changes then progress into some full blown drivers...

Coding for Beginners is often mindblowing,
sometimes the best way for new guys to learn is when pro's who understand it all, casually talk about it and make analogies and figures of speech to describe seemingly complex or (to most people ) unintelligable script commands, it really can help.

when i told a friend of mine about Gamemaker years ago i spent time telling him how things worked and using simple expressions to describe things.
