Great topic. So, let's start from my favourite... Please note that I'll only talk about Wolf3d walls, because I didn't really map in SoD yet. One of them is definitely the grey wall, with all the its decoration - it's simply the most aesthetically pleasant wall, beautifully smooth and uniform, I love making areas using this wall.
Second... brown stone and brown marble, ex aequo. They're splendid for decorational, ornate areas, and I like to use them with lots of splendour - gold chandeliers, flags and columns everywhere.
Also, I like brown weave for those abandoned-looking levels, usually inhabited by mutants, with lots of vines and bones around. With three different bloodstains, it seems perfect for these areas.

I don't really actively avoid any wall type. Perhaps I would while mapping in SoD, because I don't like this dark grey, concrete wall. I can only say that I rarely use purple slime, mostly because it's a kind of "extreme" wall, for the most dank, God forsaken dungeons imaginable. Although I used this a few times in Trilogy Revisited, usually I prefer either slime brick, or brown weave, or even blue brick when it comes to such areas.

What I DO avoid, however, is putting decorative objects like plants or flags in dungeon-like places. This seems absurd to me. If I ever do that, it's because the scenario I created needs this - for example, if Hitler had his hideout among purple slime, it's natural that he wouldn't keep skeletons around, but rather try to redecorate the place.

As far as regular Wolf-walls are concerned, I really like the "Wood with beige trim" walls, which first appear in the Nocturnal Missions. It's one of the most colorful - yet still fairly realistic - walls in the set, and works well with a large number of objects.

My least favorite of the set is definitely the Grey Stone 1 wall. This is all grey and absolutely nothing else, which is both boring and bland to me. Plus, the pattern they used for the stones wasn't nearly as interesting for me to look at as was Grey Stone #2 and #3. Lastly, I thought the original episodes of Wolf3D used Grey Stone 1 walls *way* too much.

Hmm... Personally I like the Brown weave most as it blends with nearly all walls (though not the purple and brown concrete)....

And the least I like the grey concrete 1-2 as they have too radical contrast compared to other wolf walls...

I'm with you 100% there. That was probably what bugged me the most about the mapset, even though I thought the "episode" was pretty good overall.

Are you talking about the what I call softwood partition?
Not sure. I also call it "Wood with sandpaper".

Still, I'm having trouble with using the third wall, as I think it looks weird. But I often use the grey stone 3 and the following grey/sign wall in their own separate areas. But I'm still in the "experimental"-area.
Grey Stone 3 usually only works well if you "vary" it with the Grey Stone 2 wall. Grey Stone 1 never worked well for me next to a Grey Stone 3 wall in my maps, no matter what I did. I guess that's why the Grey Stones With Signs texture didn't do it for me where those slimy stone walls were in the original Episode 2.

Re: Wood with sandpaper. You guessed the right texture, yes. Smile

Re: Slimy grey stones. Years ago, I did do some slimy versions of my own grey stone walls, but I really, really goofed with them; the green stuff ended up looking like bright green paint instead of dripping, gooey slime. I just didn't know enough about graphics at the time to pull it off right. I could probably pull it off now if I cared to, but I'm afraid it's not really a high priority right now. Sad

Along with new walls, what I would love to see is really....

Well... New guards/enemies... And I don't mean like over on the MM Images... What I would like is say another set of Wolf graphics for say the African/Desert conflict. Some of the stuff in the Mac Graphics pack that I uploaded into the Download Section of the forums would be a great starting place.

I say, get people like DoomJedi, WL_Hack, Areyep, and the other graphic masters to work out something so that we could just drop in a second Vswap and have it all feel like a new game.. even though it's still only the same maps...

@BrotherTank: Heh, you totally caught me by that.
I had in my older comp. a special VSWap that was made for improving Wolfenstein-3Ds walls and sprites.
I upload it here whether I find it (though I don't promise anything as if it is on floppy, it might not work anymore).

And then there is the Winter conflict... How about winter clothing and attire...
Anyhow.. it's just some thoughts. There's always going to be some graphics that someone doesn't like, as we've seen in many other discussions about graphics and walls... but it would really be nice to have a secondary vswap (or more) that could just drop in as replacements for the original...

I know that there is already set mods for these but you could make 'Holiday' themed Vswap's. Christmas, Halloween, Easter etc.

I do intend to make a 128x128 VSWAP that'll work completely with the original 60-level set, complete with 128x128 versions of the Static Objects and everything (It'll require a different EXE to accompany my improved palette). It'll take a great deal of time, but it's something I've wanted to do for a while now. I'd recommend this VSWAP and EXE as a starting point; you can do more with my new palette than you can with the original, as if that's saying much. Smile
