Oh YES that is such a great set of maps... I was totally floored when I first played it, it reminded me slightly of my own stuff but more so of the better works of B.J. Rowan, Gary Ragland and Martin's The Last Mission... A really nice set of maps, a smooth play, great understated decorations etc... Sometimes you need to see a playthrough to freshen up, to remind you of how good a mod really is.

Agreed! For me, serpens is really up there with the people you mentioned. His latest, Treasure Hunt, is another example of that.

Wil Wheaton and Neil Degrasse Tyson like Wolf3D and Doom in a StarTalk Panel. Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wO8yvV2UX0&t=16m20s and listen until just after 17 minutes.

The book Wil Wheaton is referring to, Masters of Doom, is well worth a read.

Return to Danger

I can't believe people were asked to pay money for this.

From what I understand, the "Lost Episodes" were a two-episode set tacked onto Spear Of Destiny, and the three "episodes" were sold as a complete package. No source code changes were actually made to enable this "set". Instead, episodes were enabled using Batch files, and those batch files either renamed the "episodes" or did bare-bones Copy commands. And since this was all done in batch files, the menu system used no graphics whatsoever. It made the menu system seem both crude and outdated to me. Plus, there was a menu system in the game itself, so it didn't even make sense to casual users. Razz

According to the SoD Super CD hint book RTD had two mappers and TUC only one, Chuck Archer. All I can say is 'Speedy Pete' and 'The Axe' weren't qualified to put the new material to full use. There's a lot of texture potential to make some cool looking scenarios but it all gets wasted on stupid looking nonsensical designs. Source code changes would've been welcome, the 'machine gun' Bats could've been deadlier along with some of the supposed tougher bosses. I also hate how the bosses from RTD are re-used for TUC, contradicting its new story and settings, which doesn't even try to explain how the Spear gets captured a third time.

I recently played a little bit of these Lost Episodes, as I had never played them before. But I stopped after two levels. For some reason, the whole thing is just so unappealling. I can't really put my finger on it whether it's just the mapping or the graphics as well, but the whole thing just doesn't work. However, it's for that reason why I'd still like to do a mapset of it somewhere in the future. Because I do think the scenarios can be interesting enough for it.

I quite enjoyed The Ultimate Challenge, but the mapping is also noticeably better than that of Return of Danger. I played a map set for these sets called SOD Floors which was pretty good... Again, I think the graphics are interesting, but if the entire palette had been changed to encompass these primarily bright, futuristic, pastel-kind of walls and sprites (and sounds too!) it may have had a better appeal - I also reckon that with different music, ceiling colors (especially these!) and VGA it would feel more complete. I cannot imagine the letdown I would have felt had I paid for it when it came out (being only three years old and not even knowing of Wolf it could never have happened) ... Because, and I've said this too many times lol, I am first and foremost a fan of Wolfenstein 3-D, its graphics and its everything, its atmosphere... Adjusting to Spear was hard enough, but to have this even further stripped away into this bizarre WWII/Cyperpunk stuff is just heartbreaking. There is potential though; Wolf Skevos-Jones has turned some wonderful work out of working with the Lost Episodes atmosphere, as have WLHack and all the other biggies.

Any of you know those Tom & Jerry cartoons that were made in a Czechoslovak studio in the early 60's? That's how I felt when I played LE. Missing the old take on it... Badly.

Same here. I think that's why I had such a hard time adjusting to the Lost Episodes as well. Nevertheless, with changed ceiling colors I do think it might be interesting to map with that VSWAP.

Oh, nice. I think that's the first Youtube playthrough of any of my mods, except that mod whose author "borrowed" most of my TR+NM levels. I sure hope xdman doesn't get discouraged by the early levels. I already forgot just how terrible E1M10 and E1M3 are.

Concerning Return to Danger and Ultimate Challenge, I have always wondered, what do all those guards and bosses actually say? And is there even an actual story that would explain the whole "tech" theme?

I'm going through them now. It sounds like:
-Alarm
-Get Up
-N-Word
-Zaaammiii aaagh
-Tod addellaat
-That stinksuh
-Heil Hitler
-Scheisse awww
-Aaah zum freukel
-Get Off
-Dein letzten ...
-Nein, niet schon wieder

That's as far as I'm getting. Laughing

Alarm, which is alert... Tod [something] Vaterland, meaning "dying for the fatherland!", Was Zum Teufel? = what the devil, what the deuce (lol), something like that... They're pretty awful, recorded with crummy echo effects or something.

Considering the sample rate of the recording, I think the clarity of the voices is amazing. I think the voices were recorded using a microphone intended for radio stations; note how the decibel level is exactly the same whether the voices shout or merely speak. I imagine the acoustics in the recording area were really rotten; rooms with bad acoustics tend to have any and every sound bounce off the walls, so you get the "echo" effect you mentioned.

According to the hint book:

Guard: Alarm! - Danger! Gluck gwhabt! - You were lucky! Mammi! - Mommy! Au! Das tut weh! - Ow! That hurts!
SS: Wer da? - Who's there? Tod furs Vaterland! - Death for the Father country!
Officer: Denkste! - You thought so! Heil Hitler! - Hail Hitler!
Submarine Willy: Was zum Teufel? - What the hell? Verdammt! - Damn!
Professor Quarkblitz: Dein letzter Fehler! - Your last mistake! Nein, nicht schon wieder! - No, not again!
Major Hans 'The Axe' von Schlieffen: Zeig was du kanns, du Fiegling! - Show what you can, you wimp! Du bist der storleste. - You are the strongest.

The themes in LE aside from the submarine pen early on include secret weapons and atomic research, computer technology labs, laser guidance and satellite systems, not entirely implausible of the time period, it has that Wolf theme to them so they look a little more advanced than usual, and need we forget Hitler's mecha armor.

I also figured out what those gold canisters are, they're Plutonium. The other 'treasure' items are Radio, Control Panel and Bomb Casing. You collect them in order to reduce Hitler's nuclear threat.

I like the pickup items, it seems pretty logical and realistic - as did the gold in Wolf 3D - but I never could fathom what on earth the 500 point item was until you pointed out plutonium... It all makes sense now... With this nuclear theme hanging heavy in the air I'm surprised they didn't add (or edit) the mutants from Wolf, I imagine a sweet Episode 2/4 crossover with these graphics and this environment... Could be pretty interesting...

Bit of a nerd rant here but if there was any speculation as to what kind of handgun you used in Wolf3D it's not a Luger, the hint book refers to it as a Walther P38 during the introduction to episode 4, you take one with you so as to make use of the Nazis' plentiful ammunition.

The machine gun is suppose to be an MP40 I'd reckon. As for the Lost Episodes, I read somewhere that the pistol in this one was akin to a Walther PPK, which makes sense given it's got a smaller frame and you use it single handedly which I like. The machine gun is definitely an StG/MP44 which makes it an assault rifle rather than a submachine gun.

I also think the LE chaingun's pickup looks similar to the Venom Gun from RTCW.

I refuse to take Wolf weaponry seriously in that the Gatling gun is cyan. I mean really.

Well, it's suppose to be silver, much like the turquoise doors, steel walls, ammo clips and the SILVER key. EGA palette leftovers and all that.

Ah... I always thought the cyan/teal bit was a vital part of the charm of original Wolf... Again it adds to the colors, e.g. the blue you mentioned in the other thread...

It does, but yeah interestingly enough the silver recolors in a lot of mods is how it was suppose to look in the new VGA graphics, but they didn't bother recoloring themselves for some reason. I still like the way it looks by default though.

Found an odd port I haven't seen before, based on the Mac version with lower res graphics but with completely new sounds.

WHAT I had no idea that Episode images existed for the MAC version... Would anybody know how to rip these?! My current work is very MAC-inspired and I would LOVE to have these handy...

@Thomas: check out Mac-enstein 3rd Encounter. Maybe you can use those, but be forewarned those are higher resolution than the PC version episode images.

I've searched for it and can't find it anywhere, I know we had/have a MrWolf as a member here in the past so guessing it's his. Maybe someone that's better at searching deeper than me (like Chris, that guy can find anything!) might have more luck.

I recognize that avatar. I have an inch that Nexion or Atina from the Haven forum may know how to get this... Or just shed some light in general.

I think it's safe to assume that's Atina's YouTube channel. But who knows?

Anyway, I do like the basic premise of the mod. It's pretty smart to use that movie as a base, because the Wolf3D gameplay lends itself for it quite well. It really conveys quite well that you're being attacked from all sides and have to fortify the prison and fight off the ones that do get in. That mod could use the pushable object code.
